We examined 160 patients with pseudopapilledema caused by deep and hidden drusen. The advantages of ophthalmochromoscopy versus fluorescein angiography in diagnosing deep drusen are demonstrated. The role of fluorescein examination in differentiating pseudopapilledema from genuine papilledema is pointed out. After many years of observation of patients suffering from drusen and of their relatives, and by studying the histologic data, the dynamics of the process were revealed. A classification of drusen according to depth of location is suggested. Hidden, deep and amputated drusen are distinguished. The conclusion is that deep and hidden drusen are the most frequent cause of pseudopapilledema.
Examinations of the fundus oculi in red-free polarized light, carried out in 19 patients (12 with albinism and 7 with the albinotic type of the fundus oculi) have revealed for the first time a peculiar ring-like figure. Since there is no evidence that this figure is formed by retinal folds, the authors suppose that it may result from light wave interference. Light waves on the fundus oculi of albinos may be reflected not only by the internal border membrane, but by Bruch's membrane or sclera as well. These waves, overlapping each other, form a figure identical to Newton's interference rings. The presence of a ring-like figure in the centre of the fundus oculi may be regarded as an additional clinical sign of albinism of the fundus oculi. Together with other signs, this phenomenon may be used as a marker of albinism gene carriership.

Peripapillary reflex first described by A. M. Vodovozov was diagnosed in 540 patients with optic disk edema of various origins. In seven patients a bright well-discernible reflex was found after postcongestive atrophy in the presence of peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy. Examination of the fundus oculi in transformed light has shown that peripapillary reflex in such cases develops at the site of difference of levels in the fundus oculi where a thinner area of the fundus round the disk in transforming and pigmented epithelium and choroid capillaries are absent, and an area situated more peripherally and characterized by normal thickness starts. The direction of the difference of levels in the retina in such cases is contrariwise to that in manifest congestive papilla. The studies have shown that Vodovozov's peripapillary reflex is diagnostically and prognostically important not only in the clinical picture of congestive papillae and secondary postcongestive atrophies, but even in cases when common and secondary optic nerve dystrophies are to be differentiated between.
