Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate in the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Several data suggest that adrenal androgens have an important role in the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis. To study the possible relationship between bone density and serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) we investigated 105 women (45-69 years). Serum DHEAS level was significantly lower in the osteoporotic group than in the normal one. The serum level of DHEAS decreased significantly with age in both groups. We established a significant positive correlation between DHEAS and bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and femoral neck, and bone mineral content of radius midshaft as well. Since there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding oestrogens, we suggest that DHEAS may have a non-oestrogenic effect on bone. We conclude that serum DHEAS may have a useful indicator of low bone mineral density in peri-and postmenopausal women.

[Ultrastructure of the interstitial cells of the rat kidney medulla].

Ultrastructure of the interstitial cells of the internal zone of the medulla of kidney in rats is detailly described. Electronmicroscopical feature of these cells may be connected with several functions i.e. urine-concentration, electrolyte-transport, production of intercellular matrix and vasodepressor-lipids. Ultrastructural picture of production and elimination of lipid droplets is not yet cleared out. Authors stress, that for the appropriate fixation of zones of different ion-concentration of the medulla special fixatives of an appropriate osmotic pressure are necessary.

[Foreign body causing coronary artery occlusion].

Authors in the descending branch of the left coronary at the autopsy of a 45 years old male--as an incidental finding--have found a foreign-body (sewing needle). Occlusion of the coronary was followed by necrosis and fibrosis of the myocard. During one year no clinical symptoms of myocard lesion were observed.
