The attitudes of British fundholding general practitioners to community psychiatric nursing services.

This study was designed to explore the attitudes of British fundholding general practitioners to community psychiatric nurses and the services they currently provide, and may provide in the future. The information was collected by postal questionnaire. Seventy-two fundholding general practitioners were identified within the East Sussex Family Health Authority, England; 20 (27%) completed and returned the questionnaire. The instrument was based on previously published work, with some adaptations relating to the fundholding element. The results confirmed previous research findings suggesting a favourable attitude towards community psychiatric nurses, and also identified the services they should provide. Three areas in need of urgent research were highlighted.

Nursing and environmental issues.

Environmental pollution is a problem which is reaching (or, some would suggest, has reached) crisis point. Stevan Monkley-Poole argues in this thought-provoking article that nursing cannot afford to sit passively on the fence while the world we inhabit is drained of its precious resources and systematically poisoned by the effluvia of 'civilised' society. Nurses must review the practices for which they are responsible, evaluate their effects on the environment and, when necessary, change them, even when the cost seems high. He goes on to suggest ways that we can work to promote the preservation of our planet.

Vehicle pollutants: effects on the lung.

As concern about pollution of the environment and the consequent effects on health grows nationally and internationally, the role of the nurse as health promoter is increasing in importance. The Royal College of Nursing responded to this concern by establishing an Environmental Working Party, of which the author is a member. This article considers one type of pollution, that caused by vehicles, and its effects on the functioning of the lung. The author argues that nurses need to be familiar with environmental determinants of health if they are to work towards upholding a 'health' service.

Nursing responses to environmental issues.

The government's White Paper, 'The Health of the Nation', has offered significant comment, but little practical advice, on dealing with environmental influences affecting health. This article explores two of the issues identified in the White Paper, the quality of air and drinking water, and questions the appropriateness of its responses to the problems. Nurses have a major role in persuading government and fellow health care professionals to take concrete environmental protection measures.
