[The adhesive properties of meningococci from serogroups A, B and C].

The adhesive properties of 261 meningococcal strains have been studied by the methods of the hemagglutination test, the test of adhesion on buccal epithelial cells and electron microscopy. The study has revealed that adhesive properties can be observed in the strains of all groups under study (A, B and C) isolated from patients and carriers, including those isolated from the nasopharynx, blood and liquor, adhesive properties occurring in newly isolated strains with greater frequency than in museum ones. The simultaneous use of all three above-mentioned methods increases the possibility of the detection of meningococcal strains with adhesive activity.

[The heterogeneity of formed collectives in susceptibility to meningococcal adhesion].

4 patients with meningococcal infection and 141 meningococcal carriers were examined. The authors study heterogeneity of human population concerning susceptibility or stability of erythrocytes to adhesive influence of meningococci. In 17.4% of cases erythrocytes were highly susceptible to adhesion of meningococci, in 20.4% were stable to this influence, in 62.2% were moderately susceptible. The highest susceptibility of erythrocytes (out of statistics) was marked at the patients of Kirghiz and Tadjik nationalities. These indexes have the same statistic frequency for the persons with different blood groups (system ABO), independently of their rural or urban place of residence. The high susceptibility of erythrocytes (0.25 GAE or less) to adhesion of meningococci is three times more frequent among the persons with meningococcal infection and carriers of meningococcus. This connection may be regarded as a predisposition of the organism for the infection. Thus, the susceptibility of erythrocytes to adhesion of meningococci gives the possibility to determine the persons who need an urgent immunization at the forming collectives.

[The effect of gangliosides on the adhesive interaction of Neisseria meningitidis with human cells].

The influence of a number of gangliosides and sialic acid on the adhesive interaction of meningococci and human cells have been studied. Sialic acid has been found to produce no influence on adhesion, and the preliminary treatment of meningococci with gangliosides or their preparations suppresses the capacity of meningococci for attachment to epithelial cells and erythrocytes. At the same time the degree of the inhibition of adhesion depends on the kind and concentration of gangliosides. On the contrary, after the treatment of target cells with gangliosides (1.25 micrograms/ml) the adhesion indices of meningococci with respect to these cells increase 5- to 8-fold. These data are indicative of the participation of gangliosides in the adhesive interaction of meningococci and human cells.

[The normal digestion of protein-containing food products by gastric juice and in pathology of the gastrointestinal tract].

The authors describe a method designed by them for assessing gastric juice proteolysis relative to different protein-containing foods, commonly used in nutrition (beef, pork, mutton, etc). Investigations involved the use of gastric juice from healthy persons and patients with chronic gastritis associated with low secretory gastric function and ulcer disease. The proteolytic activity of gastric juice turned out to be different both in healthy persons and in patients with ulcer disease. In patients suffering from chronic gastritis associated with low secretory gastric function, proteolysis of protein-containing foods was reduced to a different degree in respect to a concrete food. Out of all foods investigated, egg yolk, beef liver and mintai were assimilated better whereas egg white and mutton to a worse degree. Addition of hydrochloric or citric acid raised the proteolytic activity of gastric juice.

[Production of tetanolysin preparations and characteristics of their properties].

As the result of the study of tetanolysin-producing Clostridium tetani strains, their populations have been found to be markedly heterogeneous with respect to the hemolytic activity of clone cultures. On the basis of normal and dialyzed cultures of selected variants with maximum activity the preparations of tetanolysin have been obtained, and their hemolytic activity and antigenic properties have been studied. Antihemolytic rabbit sera have also been obtained and characterized. Partially purified preparations of tetanolysin with high hemolytic activity have been obtained by the fractionation of C. tetani dialyzed cultures with ammonium sulfate.

[Genetic limitations of erythrocyte lysis by bacteria of the genus Salmonella].

Lytic effect of Salmonella bacteria on the erythrocates of 1301 humans (including 150 twins), 1059 hens, 600 mice, 33 guinea pigs, 47 rabbits, 22 horses, 16 sheeps, 7 dogs, 2 cats and 2 monkeys was investigated. Erythrocytes of all horses, guinea pigs and rabbits tested appeared to be sensible. The same cells of humans, sheeps, hens, dogs, monkeys and cats turned to be either sensible, or stable. Human erythrocytes were the most stable. Erythrocytes of humans having had typhus or other Salmonella infections appeared to be more sensible. Homozygous twins developed complete two by two concordance of the sign of sensibility in all details investigated. Relation of erythrocytes to Salmonella hemolysins was not influences with time and specific immunization, did not correlate with blood groups and factors ABO, MN, P and rhesis systems, with age, sex and nationality of people tested. It also did not correlate with the presence of anti-salmonella agglutinins, with different osmotic and acid stability of erythrocytes. The display of hemolytic activity of Salmonella is limited by genetically predestinated species and individual properties of erythrocytes.

[Genetic markers and several indices of immune reactivity].

The highest changes of blood serum proteinogramm were observed within the first week after anti-typhus-paratyphus-tetanus vaccination in persons with haptoglobin of 2-2 type, especially in combination with NN and MN blood groups of MN system. The most intense increase of antibody titer to typhoid bacillus was observed in a month after the vaccination in persons with 2-2 type of haptoglobin. The combination of MN (Hp 2-2) blood group is more frequent in bronchial asthma patients than in the normal population.
