Larvivorous capacity of some indigenous fish of Haryana state.

Studies were undertaken to assess the role of some indigenous fish of Haryana state for the biological control of mosquitoes. Total of 28 fish species were encountered. Only six fresh water fish species Puntius ticto, Colisa fasciata, Aplocheilus panchax, Rasbora daniconius, Chanda nama, and Esomus danricus species possessed good feeding potential on mosquito larvae. The small size, well developed eyes and position of the mouth seem to be probably the important factors helping their voracity on mosquito larvae. These fish are either surface, subsurface or column feeders.

An improved dot ELISA to detect fowl adenovirus type-1 antigen.

An improved dot immunobinding assay to detect fowl adenovirus type-1 is described. The method consists of spotting of antigen on nitrocellulose membrane sheet, blocking with either 5% acetic acid or with 5% defatted milk powder and fixation of either antigen or antigen-antibody complex, with either 50% methanol or 0.25% glutaraldehyde or 0.2% tannic acid. The results revealed that fixation of both antigen and antigen-antibody complex resulted in 4-fold increase in sensitivity when acetic acid was used as blocking agent. The use of two substrates simultaneously resulted in more colour intensity and clarity than using both substrates separately.

Adenoviridae Infections

Malaria in stone quarry area of Faridabad complex (Haryana).

An analysis of five-year (1987-91) epidemiological data showed that the stone quarries contributed, on an average, 38.7% of malaria cases to the total of Faridabad Town and 11.6% to that of Faridabad district. Various malariometric indices like Annual Parasite Incidence (API), Annual Blood Examination Rate (ABER), Slide Positivity Rate (SPR) and Slide falciparum Rate (SfR) were analysed to assess the endemicity of disease, and attempts were made to compare them with the malaria parameters of the town and then of the district. Migrant population working as labour in stone quarries resides in areas conducive to malaria and hence the need for intensive control measures.

Role of An. culicifacies and An. stephensi in malaria transmission in urban Delhi.

Studies on adult densities, vector incrimination and breeding habitats of An. culicifacies and An. stephensi were carried out during June 1984 to May 1986 in three different ecological areas of urban Delhi. Both An. culicifacies and An. stephensi prevailed throughout the year in peri-urban areas with higher densities during the post-monsoon months. In south and northwest areas, low densities of these vector species were recorded. An. culicifacies was found naturally infected with sporozoites in peri-urban and south areas, whereas An. stephensi showed gland infection in south areas only. Out of 827 blood smears collected, 302 were positive for malaria parasites. Of the positives, P. vivax formed 48.3% and P. falciparum 51.7%. Peri-urban areas showed a higher number of malaria cases than south and northwest areas.

Evaluation of sterically stabilized liposomes as a vehicle for targeting technetium-99m labelled radiopharmaceuticals.

Sterically stabilized neutral liposomes (multilamellar vesicles) were prepared by sonicating phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol (molar ratio 4:1) film in phosphate buffered saline (50 mM, pH 7.4) containing 4% Tween 20. Tc-99m-GHA was incorporated in these liposomes by treating 0.5 ml of the suspension with lyophilized GHA kit (5 mg GHA and 250 micrograms SnCl2 x 2 H2O) followed by addition of 1 ml 99mTcO4- (1-3 mCi). The labelling yield was 60-70%. Tween 20 has provided significant stability of the radiolabel as compared to that without its addition, when radiolabelled liposomes were incubated in serum up to 24 h. With respect to Tc-99m-GHA alone, radiolabelled liposomes exhibited 4- to 6-fold greater radioactivity in the blood of rabbits (15 min-24 h). Comparison of biodistribution data of radiolabelled liposomes and Tc-99m-GHA in mice demonstrated a 10- to 12-fold greater hepatic accumulation of radiolabelled liposomes with respect to that of Tc-99m-GHA throughout the period of study (15 min-24 h), though their concentration in the kidneys was comparable.

Effect of operation theatre environment on laparotomy wound infection in bovines.

Right flank laparotomies were performed on five clinically healthy cross-bred calves. A significant (P less than 0.05) increase of 22.1 and 2.7 times in bacterial count in subcutaneous tissue and incised skin edges, respectively, and a non-significant increase (1.1 times) in muscles and peritoneum had occurred during 15 minutes exposure to the operation theatre environment. Poly-morphonuclear cells and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial infiltration was also demonstrated histopathologically in muscles and peritoneum. Organisms isolated from operation theatre air were Staphylococcus aureus, other Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus spp., Micrococcus spp., and yeast. Usually similar organisms were also found on the laparotomy wound, just before closure of abdomen. Operation theatre environment is concluded to be a significant source of operative wound contamination. Provision of separate operation theatres for different types of surgery in different species is recommended and the necessity for their regular disinfection is stressed.

Development of medicated aerosol dressings of chlorhexidine acetate with hemostatics.

Aerosol formulations to act as medicated aerosol dressings have been prepared with an aim of forming a protective film over the wound after spraying combining the properties of antiseptics and hemostatics. Chlorhexidine acetate along with three hemostatics namely zinc acetate, methyl cellulose and Calendula tincture were used for the formulations. The formulations were found to be satisfactory in their performance and purpose.
