Foregut cyst of the oesophageal wall in a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

Congenital oesophageal cysts of foregut origin are rare in animals and human beings. This report describes a case in a 4-year-old cynomolgus monkey with no clinical symptoms. The cyst, which was located within the oesophageal submucosal tissue near the mid-point of the oesophagus, was lined with pseudostratified ciliated epithelium and had a thin layer of submucosal tissue. The cyst was surrounded by a smooth muscle layer which was partly intermingled with the circular muscle layer of the oesophagus. The muscularis mucosae of the oesophagus was not shared with the cyst wall. Simple tubular glands were present, opening into the cyst lumen. No communication between the cyst lumen and the oesophagus was observed. Cartilaginous tissue, which is a diagnostic feature of bronchogenic cysts, was not identified in the cyst wall. On the basis of the histopathological features, a foregut cyst of the oesophagus was diagnosed.

Irreversible dynamics of the phase boundary in U(Ru0.96Rh0.04)2Si2 and implications for ordering.

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect-induced temperature changes at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru0.96Rh0.04)2Si2, which yield irreversible properties similar to those at the valence transition of Yb(1-x)Y(x)InCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which lattice parameter changes caused by an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.

Metallic spin-liquid behavior of the geometrically frustrated Kondo lattice.

Strongly frustrated magnetism of the metallic pyrochlore oxide Pr2Ir2O7 has been revealed by single crystal study. While Pr 4f moments have an antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction energy scale of /T*/ = 20 K mediated by Ir 5d-conduction electrons, no magnetic long-range order is found except for partial spin freezing at 120 mK. Instead, the Kondo effect, including a lnT dependence in the resistivity, emerges and leads to a partial screening of the moments below /T*/. Our results indicate that the underscreened moments show spin-liquid behavior below a renormalized correlation scale of 1.7 K.

Orbital-selective mass enhancements in multiband Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO4 systems analyzed by the extended Drude model.

We investigated optical spectra of quasi-two-dimensional multiband systems. The extended Drude model analysis on the -plane optical conductivity spectra indicates that the effective mass should be enhanced near . Based on the sum rule argument, we showed that the orbital-selective Mott-gap opening for the bands, the widely investigated picture, could not be the origin of the mass enhancement. We exploited the multiband effects in the extended Drude model analysis, and demonstrated that the intriguing heavy mass state near should come from the renormalization of the band.

Photocatalytic oxidation of low concentration 2,4-D solution with new TiO2 fiber catalyst in a continuous flow reactor.

Environmental pollution by low concentrations of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is a concern these days due to ever increasingly stringent regulations. Photocatalysis with immobilized TiO2 fiber is a promising oxidation method. Laboratory experiments on photocatalytic degradation of 0.045 mmol l(-1) 2,4-D with the world's first high-strength TiO2 fiber catalyst were carried out in a continuous flow reactor in which the degradations were, in general, similar to those with high 2,4-D concentrations investigated elsewhere. Degradation and mineralization of 2,4-D were significantly enhanced with no initial pH adjustments. The rate constants for total organic carbon (TOC) without pH adjustment were about two-fold bigger than the pH adjustment cases. CO2 gas measurement and carbon mass-balance were carried out for the first time, where about 34% organic carbon converted into CO2 gas during four-hour oxidation. 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), phenol, benzyl alcohol and two unknowns (RT = 2.65 and 3.78 min.) were detected as aromatic intermediates while Phenol was the new aromatic in HPLC analysis. Dechlorination efficiencies were high (> 70%) in all the cases, and more than 90% efficiencies were observed in chloride mass balance. Bigger flow rates and solution temperature fixed at 20 degrees C without pH adjustment greatly enhanced 2,4-D mineralization. These results can be an important basis in applying the treatment method for dioxin-contaminated water and wastewater.

Structural aspects of metamagnetism in Ca2-xSrxRuO4: evidence for field tuning of orbital occupation.

The crystal structure of Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) with 0.2 < or = x < or = 1.0 has been studied by diffraction techniques and by high resolution capacitance dilatometry as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Upon cooling in zero magnetic field, the crystal structure and the octahedra shrink along the c direction and elongate in the a and b planes, whereas the opposite occurs upon cooling at high field (x = 0.2 and 0.5). These findings yield evidence for an orbital rearrangement driven by temperature and magnetic field, which accompanies the metamagnetic transition at low temperature. The temperature and magnetic-field dependencies are found to be governed by the same energy scale.

Severe Fermi surface reconstruction at a metamagnetic transition in Ca2-xSrxRuO4 (for 0.2 <or=x<or=0.5).

We report an electrical transport study in Ca2-xSrxRuO4 single crystals at high magnetic fields (B). For x=0.2, the Hall constant Rxy decreases sharply at an anisotropic metamagnetic transition, reaching its value for Sr2RuO4 at high fields. A sharp decrease in the coefficient of the resistivity T2 term and a change in the structure of the angular magnetoresistance oscillations for B rotating in the planes confirms the reconstruction of the Fermi surface. Our observations and local-density-approximation calculations indicate a strong dependence of the Fermi surface on Ca concentration and suggest the coexistence of itinerant and localized electronic states in single layered ruthenates.

Orbital ordering transition in Ca2RuO4 observed with resonant X-ray diffraction.

Resonant x-ray diffraction performed at the L(II) and L(III) absorption edges of Ru has been used to investigate the magnetic and orbital ordering in Ca2RuO4 single crystals. A large resonant enhancement due to electric dipole 2p-->4d transitions is observed at the wave-vector characteristic of antiferromagnetic ordering. Besides the previously known antiferromagnetic phase transition at T(N)=110 K, an additional phase transition, between two paramagnetic phases, is observed around 260 K. Based on the polarization and azimuthal angle dependence of the diffraction signal, this transition can be attributed to orbital ordering of the Ru t(2g) electrons. The propagation vector of the orbital order is inconsistent with some theoretical predictions for the orbital state of Ca2RuO4.

Unpaired electrons in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5.

Thermal conductivity and specific heat were measured in the superconducting state of the heavy-fermion material Ce(1-x)La(x)CoIn5. With increasing impurity concentration x, the suppression of T(c) is accompanied by the increase in residual electronic specific heat expected of a d-wave superconductor, but it occurs in parallel with a decrease in residual electronic thermal conductivity. This contrasting behavior reveals the presence of uncondensed electrons coexisting with nodal quasiparticles. An extreme multiband scenario is proposed, with a d-wave superconducting gap on the heavy-electron sheets of the Fermi surface and a negligible gap on the light, three-dimensional pockets.

Ferro-type orbital state in the Mott transition system Ca2-xSrxRuO4 studied by the resonant x-ray scattering interference technique.

We have succeeded in detecting ferro-type orbital states in Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which is the first outcome in a 4d Mott transition system by the resonant x-ray scattering interference technique. For x=0 (Mott insulator), the resonant signal for d(xy) orbital ordering is observed even at room temperature, in which the Jahn-Teller distortion is negligible. The signal disappears near the metal-insulator transition. On the other hand, in a metallic phase for x=0.5, orbital polarization with d(yz/zx) character dominates. With lowering temperature, the magnitude of the resonant signal slightly decreases owing to the additional influence of the gamma band with d(xy) character.

Layering transitions and Schlieren textures in Langmuir films of two organic radicals.

Two paramagnetic radicals have been investigated in terms of their film-forming properties at the air-water interface. Although the radicals failed to display any mesomorphic behavior in the bulk, they were found prone to built-up multilayer films on the Langmuir trough. The molecules seem to dimerize in the upper layers of the films that exhibit striking Schlieren textures when observed with Brewster angle microscopy. These Schlieren textures, together with the ability to form multilayers, indicate that the molecules came close to displaying smectic mesomorphism. A tentative model of the layers' structure is proposed, and a suggestion for synthesizing new molecules with actual mesomorphism is offered. The presented results show that the study of the behavior of molecules at the air-water interface can shed a new light on their behavior in the bulk and help in the design of new magnetic mesogens.

Strongly enhanced magnetic fluctuations in a large-mass layered ruthenate.

We have studied the magnetic excitations in Ca2-xSrxRuO4, x=0.52 and 0.62, which exhibit an anomalously high susceptibility and heavy mass Fermi liquid behavior. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal strongly enhanced magnetic fluctuations around an incommensurate wave-vector (0.22,0,0) pointing to a magnetic instability. The magnetic fluctuations show no correlation in the c direction and also along the RuO2 planes the signal is extremely broad, Deltaq=0.45 A(-1). These fluctuations can quantitatively account for the high specific heat coefficient and relate to the high macroscopic susceptibility. The magnetic scattering is attributed to the d(xy) band, the active band for spin triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4.

Mechanism of hopping transport in disordered mott insulators.

By using a combination of detailed experimental studies and simple theoretical arguments, we identify a novel mechanism characterizing the hopping transport in the Mott insulating phase of Ca2-xSrxRuO4 near the metal-insulator transition. The hopping exponent alpha shows a systematic evolution from a value of alpha=1/2 deeper in the insulator to the conventional Mott value alpha=1/3 closer to the transition. This behavior, which we argue to be a universal feature of disordered Mott systems close to the metal-insulator transition, is shown to reflect the gradual emergence of disorder-induced localized electronic states populating the Mott-Hubbard gap.

First-order transition from a Kondo insulator to a ferromagnetic metal in single crystalline FeSi(1-x)Ge(x).

The phase diagram of FeSi(1-x)Ge(x), obtained from magnetic, thermal, and transport measurements on single crystals, shows a discontinuous transition from Kondo insulator to ferromagnetic metal with x at a critical concentration, x(c) approximately 0.25. The gap of the insulating phase strongly decreases with x. The specific heat gamma coefficient appears to track the density of states of a Kondo insulator. The phase diagram is consistent with an insulator-metal transition induced by a reduction of the hybridization with x in conjunction with disorder on the Si/Ge ligand site.

Heavy-mass fermi liquid near a ferromagnetic instability in layered ruthenates.

Low temperature magnetic, thermal, and transport measurements in Ca2-xSrxRuO4 clarify the appearance of a cluster glass phase, after the evolution of a nearly ferromagnetic heavy-mass Fermi liquid from the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. As the Mott transition is approached across a 2nd-order structural transition, both the magnetization and specific heat decrease considerably while the transport scattering rate diverges. A metamagnetic transition to a highly spin polarized state, with a local moment S=1/2, is observed. We argue that an orbital rearrangement with Ca substitution changes itinerant ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism of localized moments.

Electron and orbital correlations in Ca2-xSrxRuO4 probed by optical spectroscopy.

The optical conductivity spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional Ca2-xSrxRuO4 (0.0< or =x< or =2.0) system were investigated. In the Mott insulating state, two electron correlation-induced peaks were observed about 1.0 and 1.9 eV, which could be explained using the 3-orbital Hubbard model. The low frequency peak showed a shift toward higher frequency as temperature was lowered, indicating that electron-phonon interactions play an important role in the orbital arrangements. From the systematic analysis, it was suggested that the antiferro-orbital and the ferro-orbital ordering states could coexist.

Pressure-tuned collapse of the Mott-like state in Ca(n+1)Ru(n)O(3n+1) (n=1,2): Raman spectroscopic studies.

We report a Raman scattering study of the pressure-induced collapse of the Mott-like phases of Ca3Ru2O7 (T(N)=56 K) and Ca2RuO4 (T(N)=110 K). The pressure dependence of the phonon and two-magnon excitations in these materials indicate (i) a T approximately 0 pressure-induced collapse of the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating phase above P(*) approximately 55 kbar in Ca3Ru2O7 and P(*) approximately 5-10 kbar in Ca2RuO4, (ii) a remarkable insensitivity of the exchange interaction to pressure in both systems, and (iii) evidence for persistent AF correlations above the critical pressure of Ca2RuO4, suggestive of phase separation involving AF insulator and ferromagnetic metal phases.

Intersite coupling effects in a kondo lattice.

The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single-impurity Kondo temperature T(K) and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T(*). The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T(*). These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlations with a larger energy scale in comparison with the Kondo impurity case.
