The Sturge-Weber syndrome: a case involving a 13-year-old black male.

A 13-year-old black male patient with Sturge-Weber Syndrome is presented. The report describes the classic presentation of the syndrome, emphasizing the oral manifestations. The case presentation includes a discussion of the differential diagnosis of gingival enlargement, and suggestions for subsequent therapy.

Adolescent

Tumorous conditions of the fibula, supraorbital area and mandible.

Our patient's initial biopsy of the right fibula was diagnosed as Ewing's sarcoma and surgical amputation was suggested as the treatment of choice. After he refused, he was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient refused to continue this type of therapy after a 6 weeks' regimen. The supraorbital swelling occurred 3 years later and the biopsy of it also revealed Ewing's sarcoma, as did the mandibular specimen. The patient, again, refused any further treatment.

Adult

Thyroglossal-tract cyst.

Thyroglossal-tract cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis of any mass found in the anterior midline of the neck. A discussion and review of forty-two cases diagnosed between 1970 and 1976 at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center are presented.

Adolescent

Osteoma cutis: cutaneous ossification with oral manifestations.

Subcutaneous and mucosal calcifications are rare lesions which present problems in diagnosis. A large bony mass is presented, with dermal and mucosal findings. The literature is reviewed on this non-neoplastic bony lesion and differential diagnosis is discussed.

Adolescent

Parotid tumors in children.

Most salivary gland tumors, both benign and malignant, develop within the parotid glands. Although an overwhelming majority of tumors are reported in the adult population, the parotid glands are also the most frequently involved salivary glands in the pediatric age group. This study represents a combination of case material from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and our personal experiences. Of approximately 10,000 salivary gland lesions accessioned in all ages, only 124 tumors occurred in the parotid gland in children less than fifteen years old. There were ninety benign and thirty-four malignant lesions. The two most common benign masses were mixed tumors and vascular lesions. The most common malignancies were the mucoepidermoid and acinic cell carcinomas. We recommended that all solid tumors be removed by parotidectomy.

Adenocarcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral soft tissues: a statistical analysis of 14,253 cases by age, sex, and race of patients.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequently occurring malignant tumor of the oral structures, accounting for about 90% of the total number of malignant oral lesions. Among 14,253 cases of soft tissue squamous cell carcinomas of the oral area in the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the most common locations are the lower lip (38% of the cases) and the tongue (21%). In the past few years, however, the number of carcinomas of the floor of mouth has been increasing. Our material also shows a definite trend of the carcinomas to develop in patients of an age group 10 years younger than has been previously reported.
