Both S-100 antigen and calmodulin were shown in normal lymphocytes with S-100 being decreased in lymphocytic leukemia cells. Although small amounts of S-100 antigen and calmodulin were shown in acute myeloblastic leukemia cells, they could not be detected in normal granulocytes. In lymphoblastic leukemia, S-100 antigen levels in T-cell leukemia cells were higher than in B-cell leukemia cells, while calmodulin was decreased in chronic leukemia cells. In mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes, the levels of S-100 antigen were decreased, while those of calmodulin were either increased or unchanged. Calcium-dependent cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase was highest in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These data suggest, therefore, that calcium ions may play a role in the proliferation, differentiation or leukemic change in lymphocytes and, hence, that measurement of calcium binding proteins may be useful in the investigation of leukemia cells or lymphocytes.

We report here a case of pseudocholinesterase (E.C. 3.1.1.8) deficiency, silent type II. The proband was a 29-year-old healthy man. His parents were cousins. A family study revealed that 9 out of 17 members of family investigated (paternal side 6, maternal side 3) concentrations. Serum cholinesterase activity were correlated well with serum albumin concentrations in both healthy people and patients with chronic liver diseases. The ratio of cholinesterase activity to albumin concentrations in serum was found more useful to detect heterozygous pseudocholinesterase deficiency than the serum cholinesterase activity alone. Both the dibucaine number and the fluoride number were within normal range in all family who showed low cholinesterase activity in serum. The amount of immunoreactive substance in serum against anticholinesterase antibody was normal in the proband as well as his family, while it was about twice of the value expected from their activity in those who had low ratio of serum cholinesterase activity to albumin concentrations. These results altogether suggested that the proband was a case of homozygous pseudocholinesterase deficiency, silent type II.
A cDNA encoding a human endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor peptide, endothelin, was isolated from a human placenta cDNA library. The nucleotide sequence of this cDNA clone showed that the primary structure of the human preproendothelin has 212 amino acid residues and is highly homologous to porcine preproendothelin, and that human endothelin is identical with porcine endothelin.

Dieulafoy's ulcer often develops unmanageable severe gastrointestinal hemorrhage and sometimes takes a fatal course. In the past surgical operations were considered to be the only life-saving measure for this lesion. Since 1979, 46 lesions of Dieulafoy's ulcer in 45 cases with active bleeding from exposed blood vessels were treated during emergency endoscopy by the hemostatic method of pure ethanol injection. Transient hemostasis was obtained in all cases. Rebleeding occurred in 5 cases (11%) and pure ethanol injection was performed again. Hemostasis was obtained in all cases, but one case again had rebleeding due to an overlooked Dieulafoy's ulcer located in the gastric fundus. Emergent surgical operation was performed in this case. No case required elective surgery and no deaths were attributed to bleeding. Our method achieved complete hemostasis at a rate of 98% (44 cases) for Dieulafoy's ulcer. The pure ethanol injection method is one of the most effective hemostatic methods for the Dieulafoy's ulcer.
A 15-year-old girl with a prosthetic aortic valve had recurrent episodes of prosthetic valve thrombosis. She had had an emergency operation that included aortic valve replacement because of congestive heart failure secondary to aortic regurgitation due to annuloaortic ectasia complicated by aortitis syndrome. She had been on warfarin. On each admission, fibrinolytic therapy was given to her because she refused reoperation. The therapy was successful and without any complications. After the Thrombotest index was controlled between 6% and 15%, prosthetic valve thrombosis did not recur. The values of beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 were also kept within the normal range. We concluded that: (1) in circumstances that prevented surgery, fibrinolytic therapy was successful. (2) Adequate anticoagulant therapy prevented recurrence of prosthetic valve thrombosis. (3) Elevations of beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 proved to be diagnostic indicators for prosthetic valve thrombosis.
The DNA sequence of the part of the Mycoplasma capricolum genome that contains the genes for 20 ribosomal proteins and two other proteins has been determined. The organization of the gene cluster is essentially the same as that in the S10 and spc operons of Escherichia coli. The deduced amino acid sequence of each protein is also well conserved in the two bacteria. The G + C content of the M. capricolum genes is 29%, which is much lower than that of E. coli (51%). The codon usage pattern of M. capricolum is different from that of E. coli and extremely biased to use of A and U(T): about 91% of codons have A or U in the third position. UGA, which is a stop codon in the "universal" code, is used more abundantly than UGG to dictate tryptophan.

The nucleotide sequences of 5S rRNA from seven denitrifying bacteria have been determined. Based on these sequences and those reported in the literature (including two denitrifiers), a phylogenic tree of 104 eubacterial 5S rRNA sequences has been constructed to establish the position of the denitrifying bacteria. These bacteria belong to either one of the three major subgroups of gram-negative bacteria. The grouping based on 5S rRNA sequences is almost compatible with the type of the nitrite reductases, with the one apparent exception of Paracoccus denitrificans ATCC 13543. Moreover, the separation time of most of the denitrifying bacteria from other non-denitrifying bacteria belonging to the same subgroup is recent. These results suggest that the denitrifying systems in these bacteria would have developed polyphyletically, and not so anciently, during eubacterial evolution.

Complementary DNAs, decanucleotides, were synthesized by solid phase synthesis. They contain six base pairs with different sequences in the center, flanked by GC pairs to stabilize the ends of the helix. All the imino and non-exchangeable protons of these decamers in aqueous solution were assigned by NOESY experiment. Sequence dependent exchange rates of imino protons and the chemical shifts of non-exchangeable protons were examined.
