Development of the Arabic language readiness to Stop Smoking Questionnaire A-RSSQ.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of an Arabic language version of the "Smoking and Women Questionnaire" (SWQ) for men and women. DESIGN: The core elements of the SWQ were translated into Arabic, back-translated, and pilot tested to ascertain cultural sensitivity and appropriateness for both men and women in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). A convenience sample (N = 260) of smoking and nonsmoking adults completed a demographic sheet and the Arabic Readiness to Stop Smoking Questionnaire (A-RSSQ). Pre- and post tests were conducted on a smaller sample. METHODS: Researchers used methods to assure accuracy of content and understanding of concepts across cultures. Cronbach's alpha and Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate instrument development. FINDINGS: The scale showed internal consistency. Pre- and post test stability was supportive of respondents' consistent attitudes over 2 weeks at both the item and scale level. Construct validity was shown for both men and women in that scores for smokers were significantly lower than for nonsmokers. The alpha reliability coefficient was .78 for the total scale. CONCLUSIONS: The A-RSSQ showed initial reliability and validity for men and women. It is useful as a cost-effective means for identifying people in the EMR who are ready to stop smoking.

Primary care for children with spina bifida.

Primary care providers are recognizing the need to be able to establish protocols for children with complex conditions, such as spina bifida. Best practices are to form partnerships with families to address the complex health care needs for their children who require comprehensive care, coordination of community services and resources, regular communication with interdisciplinary and specialty teams, and preparation for transition into young adulthood. Health status and quality of life for children with spina bifida depends in part on preventing complications or further disability and maximizing functional independence and inclusion in society. The content in this article presents special considerations through guidelines for medical and psychosocial aspects of primary health care for children with spina bifida.

Health beliefs and early detection among Chinese women.

Little is known about the knowledge and practices regarding early detection of cancer for Chinese women either living in their homelands or worldwide. The purpose of this exploratory study is to describe how cultural beliefs and understandings may influence participation in early detection programs for the increasing numbers of Chinese women who live in the United States. The Health Belief Model (HBM) emerged as a useful framework for categorizing data obtained in Mandarin from a qualitative study of married, educated Chinese women (n = 23; mean age 30.4 years) who attended a university clinic. Cultural beliefs about modesty, husband's involvement, self-care, relationship between health and body functions, and use of preventive health behaviors in the absence of illness influenced women's participation and supported the HBM. Early detection was not a clear concept for these women: 80% believed performing monthly breast self-examinations and 70% believed receiving annual Papanicolaou smears would prevent cancer.

A legislative perspective on the school nurse and education for children with disabilities in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Dept. of Education has proposed a new direction for interpreting the "Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975" (Public Law 94-142). If implemented, a new and broader scope of addressing learning and/or behavior and health problems for the school-aged child will be provided. In this article, the special education process in New Jersey is analyzed, reflecting on political, economic, and social movements that affected past and present legislation. The effects of the new proposal on students, families, school personnel, and community resources are emphasized. Role implications for the school nurse in formulating, interpreting, and managing the child with disability in school are provided.

Cultural assessment in rehabilitation nursing practice.

Relationships between disability and culture may affect the outcomes of care, clients' interactions with rehabilitation nurses, and clients' responses to rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation nurses have leadership roles that include coordinating and managing care, advocating for clients in the health system, educating family, clients, and community, and conducting research that can be applied to practice. Professional rehabilitation nurses are encouraged to examine the content and process of their clients' beliefs and behaviors in order to improve the outcomes of care for clients and to add to the body of knowledge of rehabilitation nursing.

The initial RNF research survey: rehabilitation nursing research interests of ARN members.

The data from this survey provide baseline information for comparison with subsequent surveys. Respondents to this initial survey demonstrate involvement in research activities, primarily for the direct improvement of care. Findings from the data suggest that the research climate is right for collaborative efforts between rehabilitation nurses caring directly for clients and nurses with research degrees to conduct multisite research projects and to encourage enhanced research preparation, including computer literacy, for nurses at the graduate level.
