[The relationship of the susceptibility of mosquitoes to the causative agents of malaria to their taxonomic position and the geographical origin of the interacting organisms].

The belonging of mosquitos to certain taxonomic group does not show a susceptibility to certain group of malaria parasites, but point out that this susceptibility should not be excluded off studies without preliminary checking. There is no correlation between taxonomic relations of mosquito species and their susceptibility to malaria parasites. Geographical isolation of microorganisms and insects does not guarantee an absence of susceptibility. A susceptibility is possible even in those cases, when a long coevolutionary process between organisms do not take place. Generally the susceptibility of mosquitos to exotic species or strains of Plasmodium is lower. Plasmodia are capable to adapt quickly to new vectors.

[The creation of a laboratory culture of Anopheles martinius Schingarev, 1926].

A laboratory colony of Anopheles martinius has been first set up in the world. The starting colony was a sample of overwintered females collected in the Takhta-Kupyr district of Karakalpakia. The colony was reproducing in laboratory for 11 months (not less than 15 generations). The method for its maintenance is similar to that for An. sacharovi.

[A comparison of some malarial mosquito species in their reaction to bacterial insecticides].

Considerable differences have been detected in the sensitivity of various Anopheles species to bacterial insecticides. These differences might be associated with features in larval nutrition and do not depend on their size and taxonomic species position. An. pulcherrimus or An. sacharovi and An. stephensi species are suggested as the most suitable test objects for the representatives of the given genus.

[New models of the circulation of the causative agent of malaria Plasmodium gallinaceum using malarial mosquitoes in the fauna of the USSR].

The capacity of An. sacharovi and An. pulcherrimus to be infected with P. gallinaceum and to transmit the agent to the vertebrate host, a chick, has been established. Sufficient differences have been found in the extensiveness and intensity of infection of different species of mosquitoes and in other characteristics reflecting the agent-vector relationships.

[The possibility of using a mass of Aedes aegypti pupae and imagoes for determining the amount of blood they consume].

A close correlation between the mass of mosquito chrysa1ises, imago and the amount of the consumed blood makes it possible to determine the latter parameter using any other one according to the formulas presented in the article, the accuracy of determination depending on the accuracy of the weighing technique. The method can be used with mosquitos of any age and warm-blooded donors. The use of an indirect method determining the amount of the consumed blood (by the mass of mosquitos or chrysalises) makes it possible to decrease considerably labour expenses on the acquisition of the necessary information, reduce the likelihood of biomaterial spoiling and predict the results in advance.

[The effect of exposure and feed on the results of the testing of bacterial insecticides on mosquito larvae].

It has been established that the duration of exposition and the availability of larval feed have a reliable effect on the index of insecticide activity (LC-50) of bacterial preparations as regards mosquito larvae. High degree of correlation between the results obtained in different conditions makes it possible to calculate the LC-50 values for any combination of exposition and feed availability, if an index for one of the combinations is known (the formula is presented). The proposed variant of test conditions (daily exposition without larval feed) ensures a more rapid achievement of the results and reduction in labour expenses.

[The relationship between the amount of blood that mosquitoes engorge and their infectivity with the causative agent of malaria].

The infection of mosquitoes with malaria plasmodia was found to be affected by relative (to full portion) blood amount of the infected donor, which they suck out, i.e. to what extent the engorged portion approximates to the limiting one when mosquitoes cease bloodsucking. The facts obtained show that the survival of plasmodia in a mosquito (most likely, the passing of ookinetes into the outer side of the mid-gut) is associated with the degree of its stretching during bloodsucking. The limit stretching may be also attained during feeding up on a healthy donor.

Aedes↗

[The characteristics of Aedes togoi susceptibility to Plasmodium gallinaceum].

A high level of mutual adaptation has been established between Ae. togoi and P. gallinaceum strains. The level of sensitivity of Ae. togoi to the above agent is higher than that of Ae. aegypti in the proportion of the individuals infected and the number of agents in them. No correlation in the infectivity of the species compared has been observed.

[The reconstitution of a laboratory colony of Anopheles superpictus].

The laboratory self-reproducing colony An. superpictus was generated. The basis for the colony was Stages I and II larvae collected in the localities of Dushanbe. Adult mosquitoes were kept in hutches of 0.2 m3 in volume, rabbits are used as donors. The larvae are fed with the mixture which had been used while generating laboratory colony An. sacharovi. Since the creation of the colony and until recently (1.5 years) 30 generations have superseded in it.
