[Invasive maxilar sinusitis by Rhizopus oryzae].

We herein present a diabetic with non Hodgkin lymphoma patient that had been treated with steroids and developed fungal invasive sinusitis. The patient had intensive facial pain that did not respond to antibiotics and on clinical inspection had a necrotic lesion on right nasal area. A smear and biopsy tissue showed broad non septate hyphae and on cultures Rhizopus oryzae was isolated. There was an unfavorable outcome, and the patient died even though liposomal Amphotericin B was administered and surgical treatment was performed.

English Abstract↗

[Bipolaris australiensis in a Spanish patient with allergic chronic sinusitis].

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a disease that results from hypersensitivity reaction of the host against fungi colonizing the paranasal sinuses. A 36 years old Spanish man with no history of travel abroad had a history of asthma, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis and a chronic sinusitis with nasal congestion and headaches. Computed tomography showed pansinusitis and opacification of the paranasal sinuses. A pure culture of Bipolaris australiensis was grown from sinus tissues. Infections caused by Bipolaris spp. and treatment regimes are discussed.

English Abstract↗

Serum apolipoproteins A-I and B in male and female full-term newborns of the Toledo study (Spain).

Cord serum apolipoproteins (Apo) A-I and B from 548 healthy, full-term singletons were studied. Females displayed slightly, but significantly, higher Apo A-I levels (p < 0.001) than males, particularly at weeks 38 and 39 (p < 0.05), whereas Apo B was not gender affected but likewise increased (p < 0.05) between weeks 37 and 41. Apo A-I values increased (p < 0.05) with gestational age in males, but with birthweight in females. Results suggest that small gender and age-related metabolic differences exist at birth in term infants.

Lipid and lipoprotein changes throughout the term-period in neonates from the Toledo Study.

Serum lipids and lipoproteins were studied in 548 newborns from the Toledo Study (Spain) selected according to the following criteria: single delivery alive childbirth, eutocic delivery with cephalic presentation, gestational age between 37.0 and 41.86 wk, body weight between 2.500 and 3.999 kg and Apgar score of > 7 at 1 min and > 9 at 5 min. Mean cord total cholesterol (TC) value (1.80 +/- 0.48 mmol/l) was in agreement with those of many studies. However, more than 5% of newborns had more than 2.60 mmol/l (100 mg/dl). TC was equally carried by LDL and HDL (0.81 +/- 0.40 vs 0.80 +/- 0.27 mmol/l, respectively). Triglyceride (Tg) values were 0.44 +/- 0.23 mmol/l the cut-point being (95th percentile) for future studies at 0.87 mmol/l. With the exception of Tg, serum and lipoprotein lipids were kept rather constant between wks 38 and 42. However, TC resulted significantly higher (p < 0.05) at wk 38 than at wk 37. Tg were positive and significantly correlated with gestational age (p < 0.001), showing a negative but significant correlation with the body mass index (p < 0.05) and with the Apgar score (p < 0.001) of term-newborns.
