Abnormal motor patterns in the framework of the equilibrium-point hypothesis: a cause for dystonic movements?

Until now, the equilibrium-point hypothesis (lambda model) of motor control has assumed nonintersecting force-length characteristics of the tonic stretch reflex for individual muscles. Limited data from animal experiments suggest, however, that such intersections may occur. We have assumed the possibility of intersection of the characteristics of the tonic stretch reflex and performed a computer simulation of movement trajectories and electromyographic patterns. The simulation has demonstrated, in particular, that a transient change in the slope of the characteristic of an agonist muscle may lead to temporary movement reversals, hesitations, oscillations, and multiple electromyographic bursts that are typical of movements of patients with dystonia. The movement patterns of three patients with idiopathic dystonia during attempts at fast single-joint movements (in the elbow, wrist, and ankle) were recorded and compared with the results of the computer simulation. This approach considers that motor disorders in dystonia result from faulty control patterns that may not correlate with any morphological or neurophysiological changes. It provides a basis for the high variability of dystonic movements. The uniqueness of abnormal motor patterns in dystonia, that precludes statistical analysis across patients, may result from subtle differences in the patterns of intersecting characteristics of the tonic stretch reflex. The applicability of our analysis to disordered multijoint movement patterns is discussed.

Kinematic description of variability of fast movements: analytical and experimental approaches.

Analysis of variability of fast aimed movements predicts the properties of trajectory variance. The analysis is based on a kinematic model with nonlinear changes in "internal time". The purpose of the work was to identify different sources of variability and their influence on the trajectory variance. An analytical expression for the speed-accuracy trade-off is introduced. Experiments were performed with subjects making single-joint elbow flexion movements over different distances as fast as possible with their eyes closed to memorized targets. Standard deviation of movement trajectory increased during the first part of the movement and subsequently decreased. The variance peaked after the time of peak velocity, close to the time of peak deceleration. A dependence of the trajectory variance on movement distance (speed-accuracy trade-off) was seen during the movement (at times of peak velocity and peak deceleration) but not after the movement termination. We conclude that the previously reported drop in the variability of movement trajectory during the deceleration phase does not necessarily mean a compensation by the control system but may result from purely kinematic properties of the movement. The importance of the time of measurement for analysis of the speed-accuracy trade-offs is emphasized.

Basic functions of variability of simple pre-planned movements.

A model of a pre-planned single joint movements performed without feedback is considered. Modifications of this movement result from transformation of a trajectory pattern f(t) in space and time. The control system adjusts the movement to concrete external conditions specifying values of the transform parameters before the movement performance. The pre-planned movement is considered to be simple one, if the transform can be approximated by an affine transform of the movement space and time. In this case, the trajectory of the movement is x(t) = Af (t/tau + s) + p, were A and l/tau are space and time scales, s and p are translations. The variability of movements is described by time profiles of variances and covariances of the trajectory x(t), velocity v(t), and acceleration a(t). It is assumed that the variability is defined only by parameters variations. From this assumption follows the main finding of this work: the variability time profiles can be expanded on a special system of basic functions corresponding to established movement parameters. Particularly, basic functions of variance time profiles, reflecting spatial and temporal scaling, are x2(t) and t2v2(t) for trajectory, v2(t) and (v(t)+t.a(t))2 for velocity, and a2(t) and (2a(t)+t.j(t))2, where j(t) = d3x(t)/dt3, for acceleration. The variability of a model of a reaching movement was studied analytically. The model predicts certain peculiarities of the form of time profiles (e.g., the variance time profile of velocity is bi-modal, the one of acceleration is tri-modal, etc.). Experimental measurements confirmed predictions. Their consistence allows them to be considered invariant properties of reaching movement. A conclusion can be made, that reaching movement belongs to the type of simple pre-planned movements. For a more complex movement, time profiles of variability are also measured and explained by the model of movements of this type. Thus, a movement can be attributed to the type of simple pre-planned ones by testing its variability.

Relativistic effects in single-joint voluntary movements.

We assume that there is an upper limit for the rate of change of controlled variables in the motor control system. Superposition of two single-joint motor programs can lead to a distortion of their simple algebraic summation similar to relativistic Lorenz transformations. Experiments were carried out with the subjects performing fast oscillatory elbow movements on the background of a smooth elbow flexion. Changes in the period of oscillations during the smooth movement were used as index of time transformations. Statistically 5%-7% changes in the period were observed for each of the subjects corresponding to the predictions of the model.

[Algorithm for distinction of EEG tracings by means of a computer].

The authors describe machine algorhythm for the drawing of two-dimensional histograms of the EEG in the amplitude-wave frequency coordinates constituting a curve. EEG in its coding is presented by the extremums with the fixation of the moments of their appearance. Usefulness of the algorhythm work is confirmed by examples.

[Identification of neuronal system objects with standards].

At some fixed position of a three-dimensional object in relation to the retina plane let us name the set of coordinates of its characteristical points the standard. It is shown that the projections of the objects to the retinamay be identified with their standard (independent of the objects shift, their rotation, change of the scale and of partial shielding of some objects by the other). The structure of the net system is presented which consists of linear, threshold and integrating neurons where such identification may be performed. The system consists of a net with a feedback for calculating optimal transformations, a net for calculating the degree of proximity between the reflection and the standard and a net generator of hypotheses on the correspondence of characteristical points. All the objects whose standards are presented in the system may be identified simultaneously.

[Amplitude modulation of an electroencephalogram, connected with initiation and cessation of movement].

Amplitude modulations of electroencephalogram were studied under the condition of single voluntary movements of different duration, their mental reproduction and unvoluntary movements (T-reflex). Specific patterns of the averaging integrated electroencephalogram (waves P1, N1, P2) were detected under initiation or termination of the voluntary movements and their mental reproduction. EEG amplitude modulations were analysed with the accompanying movement of different duration. The experiments showed interferation waves P1, N1, P2 under brief movements. These specific patterns of EEG could be represented by the efferent and afferent components of the central motor programs.

[Changes in the correlation of electroencephalograms connected with rhythmic movements].

Estimation of the correlation (C) between EEG processes is usually based on time averaging. Event-related changes in C around the mean level can be extracted with the help of ensemble averaging (synchronous accumulation). Fast and small non-stationary oscillations of C can be reliably distinguished in such a way. Curves of sign correlation averaged for 64 cycles were measured during rhythmic movements. It has been shown that the mean values of the curves coincide with the known ones. A high value of C for symmetric EEG recording and C dependence on the distance between the electrodes, etc. were found. Additional data were obtained on the relationship between changes in C and movement phases (an increase in C at the onset and the end of movement cycles multiphasic form of the C curves, etc.) and on the relation between the phases of various curves of C.

[Amplitude-frequency modulation of electroencephalogram associated with rhythmic movements].

Evoked, motor and final potentials and some other EEG phenomena are suggested as additional components accompanying movements, external stimuli, imagination etc. Obviously, the EEG reactions are not restricted to them. On the basis of the method of synchronic averaging a way for detecting the amplitude-frequency modulation (AFM) related to the repeated movements is proposed. This method permitted to reliably single out the EEG effects which sometimes were detected by visual analysis. As the experiments showed the depth of AFM EEG accompanying the movements was about 3-6% (in this case spontaneous AFM plays the role of noise and equals 50% or more). Relations between changes in AFM for EEG recorded from various points, as well as for EEG rhythms were investigated.

[Separation of certain local stimuli on a nerve net].

Possibility for discerning a local stimulus (monochromatic colour, pure tone, injection etc), and the evaluation of the stimulus closeness to the local one on the neuron net were shown earlier. The present work solves the problem of discerning the signal composed of several local stimuli, which allows to approximate the initial signal by the sum Gaussian. The results explain possible evaluation of overtones of the sound signal and similar psychophysical effects. A model is described of "tuning" the receptor to one of several simultaneously acting signals produced by different sources. The structure of the neuron nets which realize the problems under analysis is discussed.

[Biomechanical and neurophysiological characteristics of voluntary rhythmic movements in humans].

Amplitude modulation of electroencephalogram and H-reflex were studied under realization and completion of voluntary rhythmic movements and its modelling by means by electrical stimulation of the triceps sure muscles in humans. The changes of spinal cord alpha-motoneurons excitability was correlated with the cycle duration under rhythmic voluntary movements realization and not depend on cycle duration under its semantic completion. The alpha-motoneurons excitability was stable and did not determine by model movement frequency in condition of rhythmic electrical stimulation and after its stopping. Analysis amplitude modulation of electroencephalogram and H-reflex under voluntary rhythmic movements showed correlation between cortical and spinal processes under its organization.
