An optical counterpart to the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U0142+61.

The energy source of the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) is not understood, hence their designation as anomalous. Unlike binary X-ray pulsars, no companions are seen, so the energy cannot be supplied by accretion of matter from a companion star. The loss of rotational energy, which powers radio pulsars, is insufficient to power AXPs. Two models are generally considered: accretion from a large disk left over from the birth process, or decay of a very strong magnetic field (10(15) G) associated with a 'magnetar'. The lack of counterparts at other wavelengths has hampered progress in our understanding of these objects. Here we report deep optical observations of the field around 4U0142+61, which is the brightest AXP in X-rays. The source has no associated supernova remnant, which, together with its spin-down timescale of approximately 10(5) yr (ref. 5), suggests that it may be relatively old. We find an object with peculiar optical colours at the position of the X-ray source, and argue that it is the optical counterpart. The optical emission is too faint to admit the presence of a large accretion disk, but may be consistent with magnetospheric emission from a magnetar.

Direct detection of pulsations of the Cepheid star zeta Gem and an independent calibration of the period-luminosity relation.

Cepheids are a class of variable (pulsating) stars whose absolute luminosities are related in a simple manner to their pulsational periods. By measuring the period and using the 'period-luminosity' relationship, astronomers can use the observed visual brightness to determine the distance to the star. Because these stars are very luminous, they can be observed in other galaxies, and therefore can be used to help determine the expansion rate of the Universe (the Hubble constant). Calibration of the period-luminosity relation is a necessary first step, but the small number of sufficiently nearby Cepheids has forced the use of a number of indirect means, with associated systematic uncertainties. Here we present a distance to the Cepheid zeta Geminorum, determined using a direct measurement (by an optical interferometer) of its changes in diameter as it pulsates. Within our uncertainty of 15 per cent, our distance is in agreement with previous indirect determinations. Planned improvements to the instrument will allow us to calibrate directly the period-luminosity relation to better than a few per cent.

Simultaneous determination of alpha, beta and gamma cyclodextrins by LC.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) can be synthesized from starch by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase). This enzyme produces alpha-, beta- and gamma-CDs in varying proportions. In the production of cyclodextrins, purity as well as yield are important factors. A precise and reproducible method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-CDs. Optimum separation between the three CDs was achieved using a Finepak amino column with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-water (70:30, v/v) at a flow rate of 1 ml/min. Detection was carried out using a differential refractive index detector. The developed method gave good chromatographic resolution of the three components with retention times of 13.16, 16.83 and 21.74 min for alpha-, beta- and gamma-CDs, respectively. The polynomial regression data for the calibration plots exhibited good linear relationship (coefficient of correlation r = 0.9987 for alpha, r = 0.9986 for beta and r = 0.9998 for gamma-CDs) over a concentration range of 2-10 mg/ml. Statistical analysis proves that the proposed LC method is precise, reproducible and accurate for the estimation of alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins. The method can be employed for determination of percent purity as well as estimation of process yields of the cyclodextrins during the enzymatic production.

Infrared spectrum of the cool brown dwarf Gl 229B.

Spectroscopic measurements of a cool brown dwarf, Gl 229B, reveal absorption features attributable to methane in the near infrared much like those of Jupiter. These features are not seen in any star. The presence of methane indicates that the surface temperature of Gl 229B is below 1000 kelvin. Features attributed to water vapor also indicate that Gl 229B is much cooler than any known star.

Surgical management of cleft lip in pedo-patients.

The Present article describes in short etiology of cleft lip and cleft palate. With this in-born defect, patient develops crucial problems with feeding, phonation, overall growth and development of affected and allied soft and hard tissue structures. This in turn results in deformity and asymmetry which is going to affect functional requirements as well as aesthetic outlook. Hence it really becomes mandatory to correct this defect surgically as early as possible, at stipulated timings so as to avoid present and future anticipated problems.
