Cholinergic supersensitivity of the iris in primary open angle glaucoma. A clinical study.

Twenty patients with untreated primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) were tested for the presence of cholinergic supersensitivity of the iris using a 0.1% solution of pilocarpine. Nineteen patients had a significant miotic response compared to six of a group of twenty control subjects. We believe that an ocular parasympathetic neuropathy may be an important factor in promoting or perpetuating elevated intra ocular pressure in POAG. The mechanism of this is suggested and several possible areas of further study discussed.

Detection of acyl-CoA beta-oxidation enzymes in peroxisomes (microperoxisomes) of mouse heart.

Homogenate of mouse heart was analyzed by using rate-dependent banding followed by density-dependent banding in sucrose density gradients held in zonal rotors. This protocol allowed substantial separation of myocardial microperoxisomes from other organelles. Particulate acyl-CoA oxidase activity was localized in microperoxisomes, while beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, carnitine acetyltransferase, carnitine octanoyltransferase and probably enoyl-CoA hydratase were partially localized in these organelles with most of the activity residing in the mitochondria. The specific activity of acyl-CoA oxidase in the peak microperoxisome fraction was at least 1/3 to 1/4 of that in highly purified renal or hepatic peroxisomes from mouse.

Metastatic carcinoma to the tongue: a report of two cases and a review of the literature.

Metastatic tumors of the oral cavity are uncommon. Most of them are located in the mandible while only a small percentage are found within the soft tissues. Two cases of metastatic bronchogenic carcinomas to the tongue are described. Review of the literature showed that cancer of the lung was the most common primary lesion that metastasized to the soft tissues of the oral cavity. The base of the tongue was the most prevalent site of metastases to soft tissue within the oral cavity.

Controlling blepharospasm effect during applanation tonometry using the Volk SuperField Lid Lens Adapter.

PURPOSE: To describe a practical clinical technique that can be used to control the effect of blepharospasm during applanation tonometry. METHODS: The Volk Superfield NC Lid Lens Adapter is used to keep the eye open and prevent the squeezing effect of orbicularis oculi in blepharospasm. RESULTS: This helpful tool can be used when blepharospasm becomes a problem that interferes with accurate intraocular pressure measurement. CONCLUSIONS: The technique is potentially useful and relatively easy to perform.

Mechanomyographic responses to continuous, constant power output cycle ergometry.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the mechanomyographic (MMG) and electromyographic (EMG) responses to continuous, constant power output cycle ergometer workbouts. METHODS: Eight adult male volunteers (mean age +/- SD = 22 +/- 2 yrs) performed three continuous, one-hour workbouts at 28, 35, and 42% of peak power (Ppeak). RESULTS: The slope coefficients for the mean normalized MMG amplitude versus time relationships were significantly (p < 0.05) less than zero, while the slope coefficients for the mean normalized EMG amplitude versus time relationships were significantly (p < 0.05) greater than zero. CONCLUSION: The results indicated dissociation between the patterns of the mechanical (MMG) and electrical (EMG) activity of the vastus lateralis during continuous cycle ergometry at low power outputs. The increases in EMG amplitude were likely due to the recruitment of additional motor units. The decreases in MMG amplitude across time may have been due to the phenomenon known as "muscular wisdom" and/or decreases in muscular compliance.
