Crafting mental health policy.

The 1990s has brought a heightened interest in policy and, more specifically, health policy development. This article gives the reader an overview of the principles of crafting public policy, the components of basic policy at a national level, the techniques and pitfalls of policy formation, and the refinement needed for application of skills to mental health policy. Nurses will be able to discuss elements of and the process for policy acceptance and implementation.

Child sexual abuse: recognition and nursing intervention.

The nursing role in early identification and intervention in child sexual abuse is a critical one and it embraces all areas of clinical practice. The signs and symptoms may be subtle, the legal responsibilities unclear, and the family dynamics complex. This article provides an overview of the clinical indicators for sexual abuse, family issues, and information about the impact on the child and adolescent victim. Common parental reactions and methods for establishing nursing support of the child and adolescent are presented.

Disclosure of sexual abuse. The secret is out--what now?

The sexual abuse of a child is a well-kept secret. Disclosure creates difficulties for the child, the family, and sometimes for the professionals working with them. A multidisciplinary, multiagency model is one method to facilitate care and recovery for the child victim. Each agency and service has a different purpose and goal. Cooperative coordination and communication are the keys to case management with reduced psychological trauma for the child and family. Child psychiatric nurses can be effective members of the child abuse health team model. Advocacy roles also can be developed by nurses who work with sexual victimization through the avenues of media, writing, committee membership and research.
