In vitro exposure of the early mouse embryo to Herpes Simplex Virus-1 strain Wal.

The causes of early embryonic death are not clearly understood, but one of them may be viral infection. To study the interaction between the virus and the undifierentiated cell, early mouse embryos in morula and blastocyst stages were exposed to Herpes Simplex Virus-1 WAL (HSV-1 WAL). In one group of a total of 167 embryos, 108 were exposed to HSV-1 WAL; the rest were maintained as controls. After washing in culture medium, these embryos were cultured on a murine fetal fibroblast monolayer for viral isolation. None showed cytopathic effects in the susceptible monolayer. In a second group, 140 empryos were exposed and 106 were maintained as controls. These embryos were cultured without a monolayer or washing to permit continuous viral contact. Eighty-seven of the exposed embryos and 74 control empryos developed normally 2 to 3 d post hatching with no morpnological differences between the two groups. No statistical differences were observed when the proportion of natched and degenerated embryos was compared. Our results indicated that the cells of early mouse embryos are not susceptible to HSV-1 WAL. We concluded that possibly the susceptibility of empryonic cells to viral agents partially depends on stage of differentiation.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura associated with hepatitis A.

A 23-year-old man developed thrombocytopenic purpura at the end of the second week of the clinical evolution of hepatitis A confirmed by viral markers. The bone marrow of this patient showed megakaryocytic hyperplasia. Circulating in his serum immune complexes were demonstrated by solid phase conglutinin enzymo-immunoassay. Platelet-reactive serum factors were also detected by an indirect immunofluorescence test using fresh donor platelets as targets. The evolution of both the hepatitis and the purpura were benign with no therapy other than bedrest. Platelet count normalized within five weeks of the onset of purpura, and IgM antibodies against hepatitis A virus as well as circulating immune complexes dropped to normal levels. It is postulated that the thrombocytopenia of this case was caused by nonspecific deposition of immune complexes at the platelet surface.

A serological survey of leptospirosis in sheep in Chile.

In order to investigate exposure to Leptospira spp. in sheep in the Xth Region in the south of Chile, 629 ovine serum samples were collected from 11 convenience selected sheep farms, using within farm random sampling. The sera collected were examined for antibodies to the following serovars; icterohaemorrhagiae, autumnalis, hardjo, pomona, ballum, and canicola, using the Microscopic Agglutination Test. Ten out of eleven flocks had sheep which were seropositive for at least one Leptospira spp. Positive tests, the majority at low titres, were obtained from 36/629 (5.7%) of all the serum samples tested. The most frequently detected serovars were, in descending order: icterohaemorrhagiae, autumnalis and hardjo. The greatest proportion of positive samples came from sheep which were over 30 months old.
