In the present study an immunofluorescence using KH-2 cells as target cells, has been developed for the screening of 1200 serum samples from normal individuals and 450 of cases from patients with various malignancies. The positive anti-HTLV-I antibody rate in the former group is 0.083% (1/1200) and while in the latter it is found to be 1.8% (8/450) (including 3 adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma cases of the 92 hematopoietic and 5 of 358 non-hematopoietic malignancies). The differences between the two groups are found to be significantly different (p value is less than 0.0001). In addition to the 3 adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma cases, the 5 seropositive cancer patients are of 5 different diseases. We have searched for the adult T-cell leukemia virus antigen and the p19 core protein in lymphoid cells of seropositive persons and the only positive cases were from cells of two proven adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) patients. Our results suggest that Taiwan is not an endemic area of adult T-cell leukemia virus and that KH-2 cells may be used for the detection of anti-HTLV-I antibodies.
Close, continuous collaboration among the obstetrician, the psychiatrist, and nurses in both disciplines is required to improve the mental health of a patient whose psychosis is associated with pregnancy. These most complex cases require not "either/or" management but the combined attention of specialists in both disciplines.
The authors measured plasma fluphenazine levels in 20 schizophrenic patients receiving 25 or 50 mg fluphenazine decanoate (FPZ-D) by IM injection every 2 weeks. The plasma levels were determined by a sensitive gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) assay with a nitrogen detector device developed in their laboratory. Using this chemical assay method, they replicated the finding of a sharp initial plasma peak within 24 h after the injection followed by a low but rather stable plasma level as previously reported by nonchemical assay methods. The interval plasma levels (averages of day 4-10 after injection) ranged from 0.17-0.61 ng/ml in 10 patients who received 25 mg; and 0.20-0.93 ng/ml in 7 patients who received 50 mg FPZ-D every 2 weeks. This four-fold variation in plasma levels during FPZ-D injection was smaller than previously reported levels achieved with oral antipsychotic drug treatment. Based on the study of plasma levels achieved with FPZ-D injection and oral FPZ-H (fluphenazine HC1) in 6 patients, the dosage requirement of FPZ-D appeared to be difficult to predict from the oral dosage of FPZ-H in the same patient. Two weeks past injection, fluphenazine was undetectable in approximately half the samples with the GLC method. Thus, radioimmunoassay or radioreceptor assay, which also measures metabolites, might be more suitable for the study of plasma levels in patients receiving FPZ-D injection.

The Bar Harbor obese-hyperglycemic mouse (ob/ob) characteristically develops its obese phenotype during the postweaning period, when access to food is unrestricted and its behavioral phenotype of hyperphagia appears. In the present study suckling behavior (viz., nipple attachment latencies and total suckling time) of lean and preobese mouse pups, derived from matings of heterozygous lean patients, was measured in either fed or fasted conditions from 6 to 21 days postpartum on anesthetized dams. Twenty-hour milk deprivation selectively channeled pup activity into suckling for both preobese and lean mice, although, in general, preobese mice nipple-attached sooner and suckled longer than leans. In particular, fed preobese pups suckled longer than fed lean pups from 18 days on, providing a preweaning behavioral indicant of a genetic tendency to obesity when environmental constraints on overeating are minimized.
We conducted a double-blind study of therapeutic outcome versus mean steady-state levels in 29 newly admitted schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients who were treated with a constant dose of fluphenazine HCI over a 2-week period. both an upper and lower end of the therapeutic window were suggested by three nonresponders whose plasma levels were above 2.8 ng per ml and by two nonresponders and one partial responder whose plasma levels were below 0.2 ng per ml. The mean terminal half-life of fluphenazine (+ or - SD) was 16.4 + or - 13.3 h. We found that concomitant use of benztropn mesylate during the initial 4 weeks of fluphenazine treatment did not significantly alter fluphenazine plasma levels.

To rationalize conflicting data in the literature, the latency of attachment of fed and fasted rat pups to the nipples of their anesthetized mother has been studied at various postnatal ages. At 10 and 14 days of age, the mode of fasting had a critical effect on the results: pups fasted in a 30 degrees C incubator had shorter attachment latencies than fed pups, whereas when pups were fasted in a 34 degrees C incubator or with a nonlactating foster mother at room temperature, their latencies were no different from those of fed pups. Thus maternal deprivation has an important influence on attachment latencies, unless other steps are taken to maintain the body temperature of fasted pups. When this variable is controlled, it is apparent that at 10 and 14 days of age, the feeding behavior of rat pups is not related to nutritional status. In contrast, from 17 days onward, latencies of fed pups were significantly longer than those of faster pups, regardless of the mode of fasting. This appearance of appetitive behavior during the 3rd postnatal wk was shown to have a temporal correlation with the beginning of weaning, as measured by the appearance of chow in the stomachs.

In a series of three separate experiments mice were exposed to various concentrations of fossil liquids obtained from coal, oil shale or natural petroleum. All materials were capable of inducing squamous cell carcinoma, but potency differed substantially. Skin carcinogenicity was markedly greater for both coal or oil shale liquids than for natural petroleums. None of the syncrudes approached the skin carcinogenicity of a pure reference carcinogen, benzo(a)pyrene (BP). It is unlikely that determination of the concentration of an active compound in material applied to the test animal will allow meaningful comparison among the diverse agents of interest to the synthetic fuels industry. To better establish the relationship between actual tissue dose and surface concentration the authors are investigating various in vitro and biochemical measures of hydrocarbon-skin interaction to determine which, if any, could serve as a more definitive measure of surface dose. Results, using BP as a marker carcinogenic hydocarbon, suggest that carcinogenic crudes inhibit both BP metabolism in skin organ culture and the interaction of BP adducts with epidermal DNA, in vivo.
