Benchmarking laboratory operations.

OBJECTIVE: Explain why benchmarking is a valued management tool and what ratios or percentages are most useful in benchmarking laboratory operations. Review the major benchmarking subscription products currently available to laboratory managers in the United States. DATA SOURCES: Current literature and Internet sites. CONCLUSIONS: The process of comparing laboratory operations over time with peer groups using statistical tools and benchmarking can provide valuable insights into areas of operation that need improvement.

Together we are successful: a model affiliation.

This article describes a cooperative venture among several hospitals to create an educational consortium for training and preparing nonregistered histotechnicians to challenge the examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). This venture has resulted in increasing the available pool of employees for vacancies in the geographical area.

Integrating key performance indicator measurements into the accreditation process using ORYX.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations introduced the ORYX initiative in February 1997 to integrate outcomes and performance measurement into the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations survey process. A survey was mailed to laboratories accredited by the Joint Commission to assess performance measurement system participation, the results of which will be available in the first quarter of 1998. This article discusses the requirements of the initiative as well as some of the problems that have been encountered.

Key performance indicators to assess laboratory operations. Action-packed benchmarking with HBSI (HBS International Inc.).

The first article of this series highlighted the five most widely used performance measurement systems for comparing laboratory and clinical department operations. This column has since taken an in-depth tour of two of the systems, the MECON PEERx and the Laboratory Management Index Program. We also have taken a slight detour to discuss the ORYX initiative, which has been mandated for certain types of health-care organizations accredited by the Joint Commission. In this issue we return to a more detailed analysis of one of the five most commonly used benchmarking systems for clinical services, HBS International, Inc.
