The effect of pretreatment with vitamin E on the effects of endotoxin in rat.

Twenty male rats weighing about 100g were treated subcutaneously with 25 mg alpha-tocopherol acetate. The rats were given 0.4 mg/100 g endotoxin intraperitoneally 24 hrs after the pretreatment, and were sacrificed 18 hrs after the endotoxin injection. The lipid peroxide level as evaluated by the TBA-value remained at the no-treatment level. In a similar group of rats not pretreated but given the same dose of endotoxin intraperitoneally, the TBA-value rose significantly. There were no statistically significant differences in the mean plasma ALAT and OCT activities or in the mean liver or plasma Zn concentrations between the endotoxin treated groups. The plasma OCT and ALAT activities were significantly correlated with the liver TBA-values in both endotoxin-treated groups but the plasma Zn and OCT, or plasma Zn and ALAT were significantly correlated only in the group pretreated with vitamin E. In a control group of 20 animals not treated with either endotoxin or vitamin E the plasma Zn and vitamin E concentrations were statistically significantly (P less than 0.05) correlated. It is suggested that the endotoxin effect on the liver is probably mediated by prostaglandin-like substances.

The effect of colistin feeding during the mating, gestation and lactation periods on whelping result in mink.

Colistin (100000 IU/kg) was given in the feed during the mating, gestation and lactation periods to 49 female standard minks. 99 similar animals served as control without the antibiotic. The whelping result, expressed as the number of puppies living three weeks post partum per mated female, was 3.22 in the experimental group and 2.67 in the control group. The difference in the whelping result between the groups was mainly due to the significantly greater number of empty females in the control group compared to the experimental group.

Variation of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity in Finn sheep.

Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) which was analysed on a flock of Finn sheep (266 sheep) showed variable activity despite the same diet and selenium intake. Mating experiments suggested that the GSH-Px activity was genetically determined. The low GSH-Px animals showed better performance as shown by a significantly reduced mortality rate of their offspring. Evidence of larger weight gain and wool production in the low GSH-Px sheep was obtained. The GSH-Px activity slightly decreased with age. The erythrocyte GSH-Px activity did not show much correlation with other genetical markers such as the potassium type, GSH type, haemoglobin type or sex. It is proposed that the low GSH-Px may represent an adaptation to low selenium intake.

Use of serum biochemistry to evaluate nutritional status and health of incubating common eiders (Somateria mollissima) in Finland.

During 1997-1999, we collected serum samples from 156 common eider (Somateria mollissima) females incubating eggs in the Finnish archipelago of the Baltic Sea. We used serum chemistry profiles to evaluate metabolic changes in eiders during incubation and to compare the health and nutritional status of birds nesting at a breeding area where the eider population has declined by over 50% during the past decade, with birds nesting at two areas with stable populations. Several changes in serum chemistries were observed during incubation, including (1) decreases in serum glucose, total protein, albumin, beta-globulin, and gamma-globulin concentrations and (2) increases in serum uric acid, creatine kinase, and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. However, these changes were not consistent throughout the 3-yr period, suggesting differences among years in the rate of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein utilization during incubation. The mean serum concentrations of free fatty acids, glycerol, and albumin were lowest and the serum alpha- and gamma-globulin levels were highest in the area where the eider population has declined, suggesting a role for nutrition and diseases in the population dynamics of Baltic eiders.
