Adenomata taken from 25 patients with primary aldosteronism were observed by electron microscopy. The cells in the adenoma had a well developed agranular endoplasmic reticulum but granular endoplasmic reticulum was not prominent. Most of the mitochondria resembled those in the cells of the zona glomerulosa, suggesting that the adenomata which caused primary aldosteronism are derived from this zone. Spironolactone bodies were found in the cells of the adenoma from a patient who received spironolactone. Their appearance was identical to that described in previous reports.

The effects of adding sugars to high- and low-tar cigarettes on the mutagenicity of their smoke condensates were studied using Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and TA98 with and without metabolic activation. The sugars tested were glucose, fructose, galactose, sorbitol, sucrose and lactose. The lowest mutagenicities observed with these sugars per mg of smoke condensate assayed on TA98 with metabolic activation were 37% (high-tar cigarettes) and 22% (low-tar cigaretts) of that of smoke condensate from untreated cigarettes. Addition of sugars increased the total amounts of smoke condensates, but the mutagenicities of the total condensates were also decreased by all the sugars, the lowest values being 35% (high-tar cigarettes) and 36% (low-tar cigarettes) of that of smoke condensates from cigarettes without added sugar. On assay with TA100 with metabolic activation, decreases in both specific and total mutangenicities of condensates of high-tar cigarettes were observed with all the sugars tested except galactose and sucrose. Treatment with glucose, fructose or sorbitol decreased the specific mutagenicity of condensates of low-tar cigarettes and glucose and fructose reduced also their total mutagenicity. The effects of added sugars were more marked when assayed on TA98 than on TA100 and of the sugars tested fructose and sorbitol had the greatest effects. Addition of sugars had no effect of the mutagenicity of cigarette-smoke condensate without metabolic activation.
Studies were done of the effect of pepstatin on ascites accumulation in mice bearing MM46, Ehrlich, CCM, SN36, L1210, and NTF ascites tumors. When pepstatin was injected subcutaneously at 80 mg/kg body wt before ascites accumulation, it inhibited the accumulation in all strains of the tumors tested. In MM46, CCM and NTF tumor strains there was also a decrease in the tumor cell numbers following pepstatin treatment. Kinetic studies on ascites accumulation with tumor strain MM46 demonstrated that even when pepstatin was injected after ascites accumulation it reduced the ascites volume. A dose-dependent effect was observed in this tumor strain when pepstatin was injected both before and after ascites accumulation. The results confirm previous studies of pepstatin's ability to retard ascites in L1210 and P-815Y ascites tumors and also broaden the concept of the mechanisms by which petstatin may be acting.
Alkaline phosphatase [orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase, EC 3.1.3.1] was purified from the mucosa of rat small intestine by butanol extraction, ethanol fractionation, gel filtration, with controlled-pore glass-10 and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. On the gel filtration, the enzyme activity was separated into three peaks; A in the void volume, B and C at lower molecular weight positions. Enzyme A was purified to homogeneity. The activity of enzymes A, B, and C was detected even on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at the position of the protein of enzyme A, which had a molecular weight of 110,000 daltons. Enzymatic properties such as pH optimum, Km value for the substrate, heat inactivation and inhibition by amino acids were the same in all three enzymes. Based on these findings, together with the elution positions on gel filtration, enzyme A was regarded as an aggregate, and enzymes B and C as dimer and monomer molecules, respectively.
Two cases of divided nevus spilus and a case of divided form of spotted grouped pigmented nevus are reported. In this group, flat melanotic macules around the eyes were located on the opposite parts of the upper and lower eyelids. The macules were divided by the palpebral fissure when the lids were open, and the two halves of the lesions formed a unit when the lids were closed. Case presentation as such may be intriguing in the clarification of the developmental relation between aberrantly differentiated melanin synthesizing cells and normal melanocytes.
To determine whether glucose intolerance in patients with chronic renal failure could improve by hemodialysis, the effects of arginine infusion on the concentration of blood sugar, insulin, glucagon, growth hormone were examined in healthy volunteers, undialyzed and dialyzed patients with chronic renal failure. Plasma concentrations of sugar and hormones in undialyzed and dialyzed patients responded similarly to arginine infusion. While blood samples were collected at 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min after beginning infusion of arginine, the concentrations of sugar and hormones in both patients had no statistically significant differences. However, plasma concentrations of growth hormone in both patients 180 min after beginning of arginine infusion gave statistically significant differences. In the present study, the results suggest that hemodialysis might not improve the glucose tolerance in the patients with chronic renal failure.
The specific activities, the Km values, and the elution patterns on DEAE 52 and Sephadex G-150 columns of six lysosomal enzymes in human liver during development were studied. The levels of total beta-D-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activities in childhood liver were higher than those in fetal liver. The Km values of beta-D-glucuronidase and beta-D-galactosidase in fetal liver were about ten times higher than those in childhood liver. The elution patterns on DEAE 52 of beta-D-glucuronidase and on Sephadex G-150 of alpha-D- and beta-D-galactosidases changed with aging. It is suggested that lysosomal enzymes related to degradation of gangliosides and glycosaminoglycans change during development.
Esteroprotease, an androgen-dependent enzyme of the mouse submandibular gland, was increased by injection of tri-iodothyronine (T3) in mice with testicular feminization (Tfm) which are genetically deficient in androgen receptors. Histochemical and electron microscopic studies also demonstrated increases of RNA and serous-like granules in cells of the convoluted tubules of the gland. These findings suggest that the esteroprotease gene in Tfm mice is normal and that T3 can induced both esteroprotease and serous-like granules independently of androgen.

A dwarf rice mutant was induced through the chronic exposure of 60Co gamma-rays. This mutant was crossed with a heavy-panicle type variety, and semi-dwarf plants permitting a more efficient distribution of light within the canopy were obtained. They along with current commercial varieties and the parent mutant were assessed for yield components, the yielding ability at three levels of nitrogen fertilizer by varying plant density and several other agronomic traits. The ssmidwarf rice possessed significantly higher rates of net photosynthetic CO2 uptake compared with that of current commercial varieties, and it was improved in yield return by increasing nitrogen application. Manner of display of leaves could be manipulated by induced mutations.

An epidemiological survey for onchocerciasis was carried out in the San Vicente Pacaya area of Guatemala. A total of 2,153 inhabitants were examined by a single skin snip, and 664 (30.8%) were positive for microfilariae. Slit lamp examination of the anterior chamber of the eye revealed microfilariae in 6.2%; the positive rate for microfilariae in the anterior chamber was proportional to the microfilarial density in the skin. The altitude-dependent character of onchocercal infection was shown in this mountainous area, suggesting that transmission occurs principally between 600 and 1,300 m. Of, 1,217 persons examined simultaneously by skin snip and by palpation for nodules, 587 were positive by one or both methods; 101 infections were detected by onchocercal nodules only and these were usually in children or persons living in areas of low endemicity. It was concluded that both the skin snip and a search for nodules are required for accurately determining the prevalence of onchocerciasis in Guatemala.
2-Deoxy-4-N-glycyl-6-O-(alpha-nebrosaminyl)fortamine (21) and 3-de-O-methyl-2-deoxy-4-N-glycyl-6-O-(alpha-nebrosaminyl)fortamine (27) were prepared starting from lividamine. The syntheses include four key steps, that is, transformation of 2-deoxystreptamine moiety of lividamine to 4-N,3-O-didemethyl-2-deoxyfortamine, selective 4-N-methylation of the new aminocyclitol moiety, selective attachment of a glycyl residue to the methylamino group at C-4 and selective amination at C-6'.
