Caregiving--learning to cope, learning the options.

Preplanning and education are the best ways caregivers can help themselves. This recommends learning about options before the need arises to alleviate some of the stress. Belonging to support groups is one way that caregivers can help each other. In addition to sharing their problems and concerns, group members recommend that keeping journals help to relieve stress. Reynolds, who took care of her father in her home, says that hindsight is invaluable. "If I had known about a company that ensured he would eat meals and take medication, I would have had some relief," she says. "I hope my experience can help other caregivers."

Adaptation, Psychological↗

Plan now to make your retirement active, productive.

In his book Planning to the Years Ahead, Lester I. Tenney, PhD, professor emeritus at Arizona State University, Tempe, links Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs to retirement planning. According to Maslow, economic and security needs can be achieved through a family environment (eg, food clothing, shelter), and social acceptance, self-worth, and self-satisfaction can be achieved from social interaction, work, or leisure activities. After the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter have been achieved, people are able to move to the next level of achieving safety and security. The level of dependency that people have on satisfying these needs through work will determine how well they are at adapting to retirement. The more people depend on work alone, the harder will be the adjustment; people who are less dependent on work will find retirement easier to accept.

American Nurses' Association considers endorsing presidential candidate in 1988 election.

Political action committees are a means for individuals to join together so they have some clout in the political process, Symons said. The most important function of ANA-PAC is that it "builds a perception of nurses being politically powerful," Symons said. "And that is more important than a single piece of legislation that ANA-PAC has been involved with." All funds used to contribute to political campaigns come from voluntary donations to ANA-PAC from members of state nurses' associations. Federal law prohibits ANA-PAC from soliciting funds from outside the state nurses' associations.
