Albumin concentration in human amniotic fluid from normal pregnancies.

The present study is an attempt to estimate the albumin concentration in the human amniotic fluid of normal pregnancy. The study has been conducted from 12th to 20th week and from 30th to 43rd weeks of gestation. The results revealed a characteristic gestational profile with an increase in the concentration with the advancement of pregnancy from the 12th till the 20th week and an inverse relationship between the albumin level and the gestational age after the 30th week till term. The relationship between the albumin levels and the order of pregnancy indicated that the albumin concentration was not influenced by the birth order.

Biochemical genetics and mental retardation: a study of hemoglobins, Australia antigen and the enzymes pseudocholinesterase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

The study reports results of investigations on hemoglobin, pseudocholinesterase, Australia antigen and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in 153 mental retardates and 161 controls. beta-thalassemia and the hemoglobin phenotype AS occurred more in patients. At the pseudocholinesterase locus, the patients had significantly higher frequencies of E1a and E1f (p less than 0.001). Mental retardation was found to be associated also with presence of Australia antigen and with G-6-PD deficiency. A model to explain these findings has been proposed.

Human complementary component C'3: an appraisal.

Results obtained so far on the C3 polymorphism suggest that the system should be a valuable marker in population studies. The instability of the complement component C3 may, however, cause some practical problems in population genetic fieldwork, since a certain fraction of serum samples may be difficult to type with certainity due to storage alterations. Studies of the conversion rate and the concentration of C3 have shown that there is no significant difference between the phenotypes. And furthermore, the fact that there is good agreement with the Hardy-Weinberg distribution indicates that the conversion has had no appreciable selective effect on the phenotype distribution (Brönnestam et al., 1971).

Genetic variations in primates. Red cell enzymes and serum proteins in Macaca mulatta.

Blood and serum from 17 Macaca mulatta were analysed for haptoglobins, transferrins, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase, adenosine deaminase, phosphoglucomutase, acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphohexose isomerase. Compared to the human pattern, the AcPh and the ADA components of macaques are fast moving; AK, PGM, 6-PGD and G-6-PG have almost uniform and similar electrophoretic mobilities; and the Hp, Tf and PHI show differential mobilities. All these macaques possess similar karyotypes.
