Serum thyroglobulin concentration in normal pregnancy.

We measured the levels of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) in 52 pregnant females at various stages and compared them with those of 15 age-matched nonpregnant females. Serum Tg was measured by a solid-phase immunoradiometric assay. In pregnant females, mean serum Tg levels at the first, second, early third, and late third trimesters were 8.4 (range; 1.3-18.0), 9.2 (1.7-25.6), 10.1 (1.8-22.8), and 12.1 ng/ml (5.3-25.2), respectively. The statistical comparison was made after logarithmic transformation of the data. The mean value only at the late third trimester was significantly higher than that of controls (mean; 6.0 ng/ml, range; 1.5-23.6), but each value was within the normal range. Although serum Tg levels have been reported to be high at the end of pregnancy, our results indicate that the Tg levels in females could be clinically interpreted without regard to the coexistence of pregnancy.

Adjuvant immunotherapy of carcinoma colli with levamisole. Prevention of immunological depression following surgical therapy and radiotherapy.

Of 57 patients with carcinoma colli who underwent radical surgery followed by radiotherapy, 15 were treated with levamisole at a dose level of 150 mg a day for 2 consecutive days, every other week, starting 3 days before surgery. Another 17 patients received levamisole in the same manner except that the administration started simultaneously with post-operative radiotherapy. The immune competence of patients was determined in terms of immune globulin level, DNCB test, PHA skin test and lymphocyte blastogenic response to PHA, and was compared between the levamisole-treated group and the control group. Levamisole had little influence on immune globulin levels and skin reactions to PHA. The DNCB test after levamisole therapy showed no difference in the rate of positive response to DNCB between the levamisole group and the control group. Levamisole, when started before surgery, prevented the postoperative depression of lymphocyte responsiveness to PHA and could more or less enhance the lymphocyte blast formation that had been depressed by radiotherapy.

Acute sodium fluoride toxicity in the rat kidney.

Acute sodium fluoride toxicity was studied histologically and histochemically in the rat kidney. The doses given subcutaneously by a single injection were 10, 12.5 and 15 mg/100 gm of body weight and the duration after the administration were 30 minutes, and one, 3, 5 and 7 days. Histologically, coagulation necrosis of the proximal tubules was found at 1 day and the injury was most striking at 3 days. Regeneration was almost complete at 7 days. Among the enzymes studied, e.g., alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, 5'-nucleotidase, adenosine triphosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase, and acid phosphatase of the tubular epithelium was the most severely impaired.

[Adjuvant immunotherapy for carcinoma of uterine cervix with PSK].

The subjects in this study were 123 cases of patients with carcinoma of uterine cervix who underwent surgery and postoperative irradiation or only irradiation combining with PSK as adjuvant immunotherapy. The changes in the immunological status of the patients were studied using various types of immunological parameters, and the two-year survival rate was also followed up. DNCB and PHA skin reaction showed no particular differences between the control and the PSK combination group, but the blast-formation of lymphocyte by PHA tended to show a rapid recovery from the reduction of the postirradiation in the PSK combination group. From the observations of changes in the peripheral T gamma and T cells, the combination use of PSK tended to cause a decrease in T gamma and an increase in T mu cells, but the both cell numbers were fallen in the normal range. The two-year survival rate of stage III patients was somewhat higher in the PSK combination group than in the control group; however, the difference between both groups was not statistically significant.

Chemicals which promote survival of ultraviolet-irradiated lon and ruv mutants of Escherichia coli K12.

The effects of postirradiation incubation with various chemicals structurally related to pantolactone on the survival of ultraviolet-irradiated Escherichia coli lon and ruv mutants were examined. Certain cyclic compounds with a butyrolactone, tetrahydrofuran, furan, tetrahydropyran, or 2-pyron ring showed substantial rescue activity in lon and (or) ruv mutants. In addition, several aliphatic, monocarboxylic acid salts, including hydrolysis products from pantolactone and butyrolactone, were also active in one or both of these mutants, especially pantoate and other hydroxy acid salts in the ruv bacterium. The two mutants differed considerably in their susceptibility spectra for the rescue actions of these compounds.
