The effect of publicized mass murders and murder-suicides on lethal violence, 1968-1980. A research note.

Previous work on publicized violence on television newcasts has been largely restricted to suicidal behavior. Many of the cases of publicized suicide, however, involve not only a suicide but a murder; they could also trigger homicides. In addition, from Menninger's perspective, suicide involves both a wish to die and a wish to kill. Hence, publicized mass murders may trigger imitiative suicides as well as imitative homicides. Focusing on mass murder-suicides, and mass murders that made two or three network news (ABC, CBS & NBC), the present study explores their impact on lethal aggression. It uses monthly data from 1968-1980. Controls are introduced for seasonal and economic predictors of aggression. Publicized mass murder/suicides are significantly associated with increases in the suicide rate. The homicide rate, in contrast, is not affected by publicized mass-murder/suicides. Publicized mass murders, in general, were unrelated to lethal aggression. One special type, publicized gangland mass murders, were, however, associated with increases in suicide.

Suicide: media impacts in war and peace, 1910-1920.

The literature of the impact of publicized suicide stories on suicide has neglected the influence of social contexts. In the present study, the context of a popular war was inspected. A Durkheimian perspective was tested, wherein the context of war would lower suicide through promoting social integration. Suicide stories in such times should have less of an impact than in times of peace. Data were collected on widely publicized suicide stories during the World War I decade. A Cochrane-Orcutt iteractive time series analysis found that publicized suicide stories during war had no impact on suicide. In contrast, peacetime suicide stories were associated with an increase of 48 suicides. This is significant, since the electronic media were nonexistent and hence could not reinforce the publicity in the printed media, as they do today. Further analysis of the relationship found similar results for New York City.

Born under a bad sign? Astrological sign and suicide ideation.

This study tests the thesis that the internalization of the traits associated with astrological signs affects suicide ideation. Data are from a national sample (N = 7,508). Only the most negativistic sign of Pisces was significantly associated with suicide ideation.

Myristyl-gamma-picolinium chloride suppresses cartilage and synovial membrane glycosaminoglycan synthesis.

Myristyl-gamma-picolinium chloride (MGP) is a novel constituent of methylprednisolone acetate suspensions used for intra-articular corticosteroid therapy. Hyaluronic acid synthesis in organ cultures of normal canine synovial villi incubated with MGP was reduced in proportion to MGP concentration. Similar dose-dependent inhibition of sodium sulfate S 35-labeled glycosaminoglycan synthesis was observed in organ cultures of canine articular cartilage treated with MGP. In comparison, the intact cartilage of cultured femoral condyles appeared less sensitive to MGP inhibition of glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Cartilage and synovium were examined 4 hours after an intra-articular injection of either MGP or its vehicle into canine stifles. No differences in Na2(35)SO4-glycosaminoglycan synthesis were observed between cartilage organ cultures prepared from the MGP-treated and the contralateral vehicle-treated joints, but in four of the five dogs studied less hyaluronic acid was synthesized (P less than 0.05) by synovial cultures from joints exposed to MGP than by cultures from the contralateral joints. Synovium from the MGP-treated joints remained capable of phagocytosis. These observations indicate that at clinically relevant concentrations MGP can inhibit synovial hyaluronic acid synthesis, but has little metabolic effect on normal articular cartilage.

The sociological study of suicide: methodological issues.

This paper is a critical review of selected methodological issues in the sociological study of suicide. It first distinguishes between two broad research orientations: the micro and macro approaches to the subject. The paper than focuses on a critical assessment of the dominant macro-level methodology. Three recurrent problems are identified: measurement issues on four key variables (suicide and parasuicide, economic conditions, religion, and political conditions such as war); problems in studying the effect of mass media stories on suicide; and reasons why we need to adopt a cross-national method in order to test sociological theories for contextual effects. Partial remedies to many of these problems are discussed.

The effect of unemployment duration on national suicide rates: a time series analysis, 1948-1982.

The relationship between unemployment and suicide in the United States is examined. Data for the period 1948 to 1978, primarily from the U.S. Public Health Service, are used to examine the effect of the duration of unemployment on suicide. "The results of a Cochrane-Orcutt iterative regression analysis indicate that the greater the duration of unemployment the greater the suicide rate. Using ex post forecasting techniques it is estimated that increases in unemployment during the Reagan administration have been associated with at least 929 additional deaths from suicide."

A Comparison of Soybean Agglutinin in Cultivars Resistant and Susceptible to Phytophthora megasperma var. sojae (Race 1).

The amount of soybean agglutinin (SBA) detectable by radioimmunoassay in seeds of resistant cultivars to Phytophthora megasperma var. sojae was approximately twice that of susceptible cultivars. SBA was preferentially released at earlier times (6-9 hours) and in higher amounts in the imbibate from resistant cultivars as compared to susceptible cultivars. The lectin in the imbibate was immunologically identical to the seed lectin, indicating little or no proteolysis had occurred, and was active in hemagglutination. Binding of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled SBA to mycelial cell walls could be abolished by adding N-acetyl galactosamine or galactose. Purified SBA at concentrations of 150 to 300 micrograms inhibited mycelial growth by 50%, and the imbibate from Govan (resistant) cultivar was more inhibitory than the imbibate from Shore (susceptible) cultivar. Removal of SBA from the imbibate by affinity chromatography abolished the inhibition of mycelial growth, but the inhibition could be recovered from the eluant containing lectin.

Suicide in Detroit 1975: changes and continuities.

Data on 193 cases of suicide in Detroit are analyzed to assess changes and continuities in the etiology of suicide. A significant change in the correlates of suicide is a shift in the group with the highest rate of suicide from the elderly to the relatively young age cohorts. A tentative explanation for this new pattern is suggested in terms of youth culture and underemployment. Continuities in the traditional etiology of suicide included the findings that males, persons in manual occupations, whites, and immigrants had relatively high rates of suicide.

Two-dimensional spreads of synaptonemal complexes from solanaceous plants. I. The technique.

Using beta-glucuronidase the cell walls of tomato and potato primary microsporocytes can be digested. When the resulting protoplasts are exposed to distilled water, they burst, and complete sets of synaptonemal complexes are released to settle on plastic coated slides. After drying and formalin fixation, the synaptonemal complexes can be stained with silver or phosphotungstic acid and observed in the light and/or electron microscope. Silver staining gives better contrast for both light and electron microscopy but stains only lateral elements and kinetochores. Phosphotungstic acid staining gives little or no contrast for light microscopy, but stains both the lateral and central elements of the synaptonemal complex, kinetochores, and structures that are probably recombination nodules for electron microscopy. This technique offers a powerful tool for genome analysis by allowing (1) the determination of relative and absolute lengths of synaptonemal complexes and chromosome arm ratios at pachytene, (2) the analysis of complex patterns of synapsis, and (3) the location of what are probably recombination nodules along the length of synaptonemal complexes.
