[Effects of hyperbaric oxygenation in skin and pulmonary infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

About 80% of nosocomial infections are caused by aerobic bacteria. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium pertaining to the Pseudomonadaceae family. P. aeruginosa is responsible for 6-22% of all hospital infections. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of both hyperbaric oxygen-therapy (HBO 2 Atm x 35 min/day) alone for 8 days and when associated to the chemoantibiotic therapy (amikacine 15 mg/kg/day for 8 days intraperitoneal), in rats infected through pulmonary and subcutaneous intake. In rats affected by P. aeruginosa, HBO induces a significant reduction in mortality and morbility with bacteria eradication in blood culture findings, bronchial aspirate and skin biopsies. These effects were increased by the use of amikacine which is an antibiotic used for the treatment of Gram-negative bacteria.

Verrucous carcinoma in situ of the bladder, not associated with urinary schistosomiasis.

Verrucous carcinoma is a variant of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma that rarely affects the bladder. The bladder localization of this carcinoma is usually associated with urinary schistosomiasis. In this work we report on a rare case of verrucous carcinoma of the bladder not associated with urinary schistosomiasis. To complete this study, analysis of DNA was carried out on the histologic sections of the tumour.

Plasma 1,25 hydroxycholecalciferol concentrations and net intestinal calcium, phosphate and magnesium absorption in man.

We evaluated the relationship between plasma concentrations of the renal hormone (I,25(OH)2 vitamin D and net intestinal CA,PO4 and Mg absorption in healthy volunteers eating similar diets. Net intestinal CA absorption was positively correlated to plasma I,25(OH)2D concentrations. By contrast, there was no significant correlation between PO4 and Mg absorption and plasma I,25(OH)2D concentrations. We conclude that net intestinal Ca absorption is critically dependent upon the availability of renal homone, while other factors must play a dominant role in regulating net intestinal PO4 and MG absorption.

Serum alpha-tocopherol, lipids, potassium and creatine phosphokinase in normal and patients with malabsorption.

Serum alpha-tocopherol, lipids, potassium and creatine phosphokinase levels we-remeasured in 20 adult male control patients and 120 malabsorption patients. The malabsorption group had significantly lower serum alpha-tocopherol levels than the control group. The change was independent of serum total lipid levels that were not significantly different among the two groups. Serum potassium and creatine phosphokinase did not correlate with serum alpha-tocopherol levels in either control and malabsorption group. Body mass indices that are directly relate to adiposity increased with increase of serum alpha-tocopherol and total lipids of serum.

Serial studies of immunocompetence in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Studies of the immunocompetence of patients undergoing radiation therapy were carried out before and after treatment. The immunological evaluation is a valuable prognostic tool for patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. The degree of immunoresponsiveness is not related to the stage of the primary tumor, but it definitely correlates with the extent of lymph node involvemnt. This evaluation may permit identification of those cases for which immunotherapy is indicated.
