[Chromosome changes on 20 lesions of cervix uteri ].

Cytogenetic studies on biopsies of cervix uteri (5 dysplasias, 2 carcinomas in situ and 13 invasive carcinomas) are reported in this paper in order to detect the numerical and structural chromosome changes. In dysplasias, the deviation number is mostly restricted around the diploid mode while in carcinomas the range of deviation is wider and more than one modal number could be identified. Structural aberrations of chromosome 1 were found in one case of dysplasia and in 10 cases of invasive carcinomas. A long acrocentric was observed in three carcinomas and one dysplasia, while a medium-sized metacentric in three carcinomas. Further markers : minute chromosomes (in two carcinomas) and double minute bodies (DMs, in one carcinoma). These studies and the early ones suggest that the changes of chromosome 1 may be a relative late appearance of malignant transformation. The possible role of DMs is also discussed.

Double atrial parasystole. Case report.

A 62 year-old man with hiatal hernia and complex atrial arrhythmia is reported. On the standard electrocardiogram a double atrial parasystole is found, with reversed coupling. During carotid sinus massage only one of the parasystolic foci is not influenced, and assumes the atrial activity, regularizing the cardiac rhythm.

Testing a predictive regression model for response in adult acute myeloid leukemia comparing two induction regimens of the E.O.R.T.C. -AML-5 and AML-6 trial.

Pretreatment characteristics of 295 adults with acute myeloid leukemia who were treated in a large cooperative group of the E.O.R.T.C. between 1976 and 1982 (AML-5) have been evaluated to assess their value as prognostic indicators. Logistic regression methods were applied to derive a model for prediction of achievement of CR. The model was tested prospectively in an independent group of 274 subsequent patients treated with a different but similar induction regimen (AML-6), who were matched in all eligibility criteria. The concordance between the observed percentage of response in the AML-6 trial population and the expected response given by the model built on the AML-5 study was very close for the good response subgroups (WBC less than 50,000/mm3 and age less than 60 yrs), while the discrepancies in the poor prognostic groups were considerable. Furthermore, our study shows that the prognostic value of factors may shift as treatment strategies change and that caution is necessary in applying conclusions from a preceding trial to a current patient population.

The effect of prolonged dextran administration in guinea pigs.

Dextran 70 6% in 0.9% NaCl solution, injected intraperitoneally in guinea pigs, 10 ml/kg b.w./day, during a period of 27 days brought the lowering of the plasma proteins level, whie the total colloid osmostic pressure (due to Dectran and proteins) remained close to that of the control group. The concentration of typhus 0 antibodies and the number of precipitation lines assayed during immunodiffusion in gel were lower than in thd control group. The diminishing of the red blood cells number and of the amount of hemoglobin corresponds to the decreasing proportion of the erythroblastic series (in the bone marrow). Histological changes in the liver and in the kidney are minimal and could be explained by the effort made by these depurating organs to eliminate Dextran from the body.
