[Influence of acupuncture and moxibustion on QOL of the elderly living in nursing home and care house].

To clarify the influence of acupuncture therapy on the quality of life (QOL) of the elderly, the acupuncture and moxibustion were performed on 35 elderly subjects (8 men and 27 women) with a mean age 79.1 living in nursing homes and elderly care houses. The acu-points were chosen according to their symptoms. Changes in pain and other complaints, body condition, appetite, sleep, bowel movement and activity of daily living (ADL) were evaluated by questionnaires. A total of 38 symptoms were reported. A high rate of improvement was seen in pain and stiffness. For example, there was 86% improvement in low back pain, 84% in knee joint pain and 82% in shoulder stiffness. Concerning body conditions, decrease of fatigue, relaxed of feeling, improvement in appetite, sleep and bowel movement were observed. Furthermore, gait and ADL were also improved. These results suggested that acupuncture and moxibustion are useful to improve QOL in the elderly.

[Method-performance studies of notified analytical method for inabenfide].

Method-performance studies were conducted for the notified revised analytical method of inabenfide in unpolished rice. Six laboratories analyzed unpolished rice spiked with 0.05 microgram/g of inabenfide in replicate. Mean recovery from rice was 85.0%. Repeatability relative standard deviation value was 4.2% and reproducibility relative standard deviation value was 8.1%. The detection limits were 0.002-0.01 microgram/g.

Pathology of chronic hepatitis C in children. Child Liver Study Group of Japan.

Limited information is available regarding the histology of hepatitis C virus infection in children. The aim of this study was to determine the histological pattern of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in children, and liver biopsy specimens from 109 pediatric patients with CHC were examined. Each biopsy specimen was evaluated based on a numerical scoring system for the stage of fibrosis (1-4), the grade of portal/periportal necroinflammation (0-4), the grade of lobular necroinflammation (0-4), and their sum (final grade). The histological lesions considered to be characteristic of chronic hepatitis were also evaluated. None of the children had liver cirrhosis, and 105 cases (97%) were stage 1 or 2. Only 4 children were stage 3. Two of these 4 cases showed hemosiderosis. A significant correlation was observed between the staging score and the final grade in the pediatric patients (r = .59; P < .0001). The histological characteristics of adult CHC, such as lymphoid aggregate, bile duct injury, and fatty changes, were also observed in the children. In conclusion, the majority of children with CHC presented with mild fibrosis, but a few showed CHC with lobular distortion and hemosiderosis. Frequent blood transfusion may aggravate hepatic lesions in pediatric CHC.

Dysphagia in children with oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum.

Feeding difficulty necessitating tube feeding after the infantile period was seen in 3 children with oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum. Videofluorographic imaging showed impaired pharyngeal function, which was thought to result from dysplasia of the pharyngeal muscles. Note should be made of feeding difficulty in patients with oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum.
