[Comparative analysis of the effectiveness of countermeasures in rural settlements in the long-term period after the accident at the Chernobyl AES].

A comparative analysis of the strategy of countermeasures aimed at reducing exposure doses to the rural population is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed system of countermeasures assessed by criteria such as reduction factor of exposure doses and cost of averted doses. Costs of countermeasures in the rural settlements located in the affected zone are calculated for a long term after the Chernobyl NPP accident.

[Evaluation of the effectiveness of protective measures for reduction of the rural population exposure related to contamination of forest ecosystems].

The contribution of different forest pathways to the irradiation of inhabitants of the forest settlements after the ChNPP accident is estimated. It has been shown that the long-term negative impact of forest ecosystems contaminated to the rural population requires application of special protective measures for a long time after the ChNPP accident.

[Comparative evaluation of biological availability of 137Cs in soil of various types of forest ecosystems].

On five forests plots varying in species composition of woody plants and soil properties, 137Cs vertical distribution and 137Cs forms occurring in different horizons of forest soils have been studied. It was found that bulk 137Cs and contents of physico-chemical forms of this radionuclide in different horizons of forest soils vary considerably within both plots with different characteristics and individual horizons. The reported regularities can explain observed differences in 137Cs distribution in forest ecosystems of various types.

[Analysis of factors determining the biological availability of 137Cs in forest ecosystem soils].

On five forest plots varying in species composition of woody plants and soil properties, 137Cs accumulation by vegetation of the forest understorey has been studied. Differences in 137Cs availability for root uptake are shown to be dependent on a vertical distribution of 137Cs content over the soil profile, percentage of exchangeable 137Cs and distribution of plant root systems (fungous mycelium) in soil. A 137Cs-bioavailability index is suggested and its non-linear relationship with 137Cs transfer factors to different plant species in the understorey is shown.

[Radiation protection of the environment: anthropocentric and eco-centric principles].

The second half of the XX century was dominated in the field of radiation protection of the environment by the anthropocentric concept stated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). According to this concept "if man is adequately protected by radiological standards then biota are also adequately protected". At the end of the XX--beginning of the XXI centuries in the area of area of radiation protection of nature an ecocentric strategy is beginning to develop where emphasis has swung to the protection of biota in their environment. Inadequacy of ICRP's anthroposentric concept is reported. Issues are discussed such as ecological dosimetry, nonequidosal irradiation of man and biota, criteria for estimating radiation induced changes in biota and man, as well as the need to harmonize permissible exposure doses to man and biota. An urgent need is stressed to develop a single (synthetic) concept of radiation protection which simultaneously ensures protection of human health and biota well-being in their environment. This concept is to be based on the recognition of the integrity of socio-natural ecosystems where man and biota are considered as a unity.

[Development of a strategy for countermeasures application aimed at remediation of consequences of radioactive contamination of forest ecosystems].

The radiation situation has been assessed in forest ecosystems of the most affected by the Chernobyl accident region of the Russian Federation--Novozybkov district of the Bryansk region. Using a set of migration models and methods for estimating doses of external and internal irradiation of the population, predictive calculations have been made that demonstrated a need to implement countermeasures in forest ecosystems of the region. A strategy of countermeasures application was developed based on a conservative approach, which postulates priority of observance of the sanitary-hygienic standard--permissible exposure level for the population and need for invoking the economic indicators to optimize countermeasure option. The effectiveness of countermeasures has been assessed based on a multicriterium approach using a system of decision making PRIME Decisions. The derived results have been formalized as indices of countermeasures effectiveness for different combinations of criteria.

[Regularities of changes in 137Cs content in milk in the long term after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident].

Regularities of changes in 137Cs content in cattle milk in the long term after the Chernobyl accident have been analyzed. Contamination levels of haylands and pastures, soil properties, specific features of agricultural production and time after the fallout play a crucial role in 137Cs concentration changes in animal products. Trends have been studied that reflect the influence of these factors and their significance assessed. The half-life periods of 137Cs decay in milk vary over the period of 1994 to 2000 between 7.1 and 14.8 years and approach similar periods calculated for the long term after global radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons tests.

[Modelling of long-term radionuclide migration in a non-running fresh-water reservoir].

A mathematical model is presented for radionuclide migration in a non-running fresh-water reservoir that takes into account removal of microimpurities from water as a result of both molecular and ion exchange sorption at the bottom sediments water interface and detritus formation. The model was tested for sensitivity to precisely estimate experimental parameters. The test showed that the model is universal. Prediction was made of reduction in water of 137Cs and 90Sr contents and distribution of these radionuclides in the water body affected by the accident at the "Mayak" chemical plant.

[A comparative analysis of the impact on biota and man in the 30 km zone of the Chernobyl NPP].

A methodological approach is described for a comparative assessment of ionizing radiation effects on man and biota, based on the use of indices of radiation impact--ratios of actual exposure doses to environmental objects (including humans) and critical ones. As such doses, standards limiting radiation exposure and doses at which phenotypical effects were absent after the Chernobyl accident were employed, respectively for man and biota. For the test site chosen within the 30 km ChNPP zone (region of the Borshchovka settlement), dose burdens to reference biota species and the population (with and without evacuation) and the corresponding radiation impact indices were calculated. For the long term period after the accident radiation safety standards for man are shown to ensure radiation safety for biota as well. At the same time in the early period after the accident the emergency regulations do not guarantee adequate protection of nature, some species of which can be subject to irradiation more than man, even if countermeasures like evacuation are not applied. A conclusion has been made on the necessity of a more detailed and comprehensive analysis of situations when the anthropocentric principle "if radiation standards protect man then biota are also adequately protected" is violated.

[The use of computer system in the introduction of countermeasures in agriculture after the Chernobyl accident].

In the development of strategies for countermeasures aimed at the rehabilitation of contaminated areas, essential is to identify criteria for assessing their effectiveness and factors influencing the priority of the criteria chosen. A method is suggested for assessing effectiveness of countermeasures in agriculture based on a multicriterium analysis of radiologic, economic, regulatory and socio-psychological indicators characterizing the use of countermeasures. Rating of countermeasures strategies is presented depending on financing of works on the rehabilitation of the Chernobyl affected areas.

[Prediction of 137Cs accumulation in animal products in the territory of Semipalatinsk test site].

The paper describes mathematical models for 137Cs behavior in the organism of horses and sheep pasturing on the bording area to the testing area "Ground Zero" of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The models are parameterized on the base of the data from an experiment with the breeds of animals now commonly encountered within the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The predictive calculations with the models devised have shown that 137Cs concentrations in milk of horses and sheep pasturingon the testing area to "Ground Zero" can exceed the adopted standards during a long period of time.

[Prediction of 137Cs behaviour in the soil-plant system in the territory of Semipalatinsk test site].

A mathematical model of 137Cs behaviour in the soil-plant system is presented. The model has been parameterized for the area adjacent to the testing area Ground Zero of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The model describes the main processes responsible for the changes in 137Cs content in the soil solution and, thereby, dynamics of the radionuclide uptake by vegetation. The results are taken from predictive and retrospective calculations that reflect the dynamics of 137Cs distribution by species in soil after nuclear explosions. The importance of factors governing 137Cs accumulation in plants within the STS area is assessed. The analysis of sensitivity of the output model variable to changes in its parameters revealed that the key soil properties significantly influence the results of prediction of 137Cs content in plants.

[Assessment of factors determining the dynamics of pollution by Cs-137 of agricultural production after the Chernobyl AES accident].

Analysis of the dynamics of 137Cs content in the main kinds of plant and animal products obtained on the basis of a separate farm located at 40-50 km to the north from Chernobyl NPP has shown that in 1987-1991 the decrease of 137Cs transfer from soil to agricultural crops was on the average 2--4-fold, and for milk--6--7-fold during the pasture period and 10-fold--during stabling one. The half-life periods of decrease of 137Cs constant in the main kinds of plant production vary from 2.1 to 5.9 years; for milk this parameter equals to 1.4 years in the pasture period, and in the stabling one--2.8 years. The main contribution (67-80%) to the decrease of 137Cs transfer to plant products is made by biogeochemical processes causing decrease of mobility of 137Cs in soil; as for agrochemical countermeasures, these contribute 20--33%. Decrease of contamination of milk, on the contrary, is mainly due to realization of countermeasures--contribution of the latter reaches 60%.

[Regularities of changes in Cs-137 contents in animal products in the territory of the Russian Federation polluted as a consequence of the Chernobyl AES accident].

Dynamics of 137Cs content in main types of animal production obtained in region of Russia contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl NPP accident, 1986, is described. Decrease of contamination of agricultural production during 1987--1992 was of not regular character. The most rapid decrease of 137Cs content in production was registered in the first post-accidental period which was connected with intensive realization of countermeasures in agriculture at that time. Half-life periods of 137Cs content (major dose-forming radionuclide) decrease in production for areas of Russia subjected to the most intensive contamination amounted of 1.6 to 4.8 years, as dependent on the scale of countermeasures carried out.
