Fungus-like hyphochytrids associated with human disease.

We report two cases, with liver and brain abscess, respectively, where fungus-like organisms belonging to the Hyphochytriomycota were found at the site of inflammation together with Peptococcus in the first and Cysticercus cellulosae in the second case. This is the first time these groups of organisms have been reported in human material. The role of hyphochytrids in human pathology remained uncertain as they were found together with already known human pathogens.

Infrequent finding of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli in diarrheal stools in Belgrade, Serbia.

Out of 2,638 patients, with acute diarrhea, verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) was isolated from the stools of 8 (0.3%). There was no visible blood in their stools and none of them developed other syndromes associated with VTEC infection. None of the isolated VTEC agglutinated with O157 E. coli antiserum, while only 3 strains hybridized with the DNA probe CVD 419, designed to detect VTEC. The data obtained suggest that VTEC is not an important causative agent of acute diarrhea in Belgrade.

[Analysis of the results of mycological examination of skin samples from 1997 to 1998].

Mycological findings of 2,447 skin specimens were analyzed. The aim of the study was to estimate the methodology for mycological examination, frequency of particular fungal species isolation and localization on the skin. Fungi were found in 591 specimens: 53.64% microscopically and isolated in cultures, 31.47% only microscopically and 14.89% only isolated in cultures. Total number of isolated strains was 405 (356 strains grew on Sabouraud agar with antibiotics and 272 on mycobiotic agar). The most frequently isolated species were: Trichophyton mentagrophytes (27.9%), Trichophyton rubrum (20%) and Candida albicans (9.14%). The most frequent localizations on skin where fungi had been found were foot (41.47%), toe-nail (22.06%) and finger-nail (10.88%). Sabouraud agar is more reliable for isolation of dermatophytes and mycobiotic agar for Candida species. Usage of both media for primoisolation provides better and faster identification of fungi causing dermatomycoses. Comparing our with other studies, the patterns of fungal appearance in our population had changed and the number of nail specimens, where fungi were found had increased.

Two cases of exogenous endophthalmitis due to Fusarium moniliforme and Pseudomonas species as associated aetiological agents.

Perforative eye injuries in two patients were complicated by fulminant endophthalmitis. In both patients the cornea was free of micro-organisms. Vitrectomy of the posterior pars plana was performed and the contents of the vitreous body were examined mycologically and bacteriologically. Fusarium moniliforme var. subglutinans and Pseudomonas species were isolated from both patients. Fungal and bacterial organisms penetrated the vitreous body via metal foreign bodies.

[Clinico-laboratory characteristics and treatment of patients with trichinosis].

The severity of clinical features of trichinosis and cardiac involvement incidence were examined in the study. The values of eosinophiles, serum enzymes and serologic response to T. spiralis were determined in relation to the disease severity. Twenty-nine patients, of mean age from 24 to 29 years treated in the Clinic in the period from January to April 1995 were presented-7 with severe form of trichinosis, 10 with moderately severe and 12 with light. The fever was noticed in 93.1% of patients, gastrointestinal disorders in 65.5%, myalgias in 96.6%, facial edema in 79.3%, cardiac disorders in 31% and rash in 20.7%. Positive IIF test result was found in 100% of patients with severe clinical features, and only in 58.3% of patients with light clinical features. The patients were treated with mebendazole in the dose of 25 mg/kg BM a day during 14 days. It was concluded that severe trichinosis forms were frequently followed by myocardial damage, that severe forms responded faster and better serologically to trichinella and those patients should be treated with high mebendazole doses.
