Probing spin correlations with phonons in the strongly frustrated magnet ZnCr2O4.

The spin-lattice coupling plays an important role in strongly frustrated magnets. In ZnCr2O4, an excellent realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore network, a lattice distortion relieves the geometrical frustration through a spin-Peierls-like phase transition at T(c)=12.5 K. Conversely, spin correlations strongly influence the elastic properties of a frustrated magnet. By using infrared spectroscopy and published data on magnetic specific heat, we demonstrate that the frequency of an optical phonon triplet in ZnCr2O4 tracks the nearest-neighbor spin correlations above T(c). The splitting of the phonon triplet below T(c) provides a way to measure the spin-Peierls order parameter.

Spin singlet formation in MgTi2O4: evidence of a helical dimerization pattern.

The transition-metal spinel MgTi2O4 undergoes a metal-insulator (M-I) transition on cooling below T(M-I)=260 K. A sharp reduction of the magnetic susceptibility below T(M-I) suggests the onset of a magnetic singlet state. Using high-resolution synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction, we have solved the low-temperature crystal structure of MgTi2O4, which is found to contain dimers with short Ti-Ti distances (the locations of the spin singlets) alternating with long bonds to form helices. Band structure calculations based on hybrid exchange density functional theory show that, at low temperatures, MgTi2O4 is an orbitally ordered band insulator.

Exchange interaction effects on the optical properties of LuMnO3.

We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm(-1) at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn d-d transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blueshift ( approximately 0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in the temperature dependence of the quasistatic dielectric constant epsilon(0) below T(N) approximately 90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.

TCDD-up-regulation of IGFBP-6 and IL-5R alpha subunit genes in vivo and in vitro.

Although the potent environmental contaminant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been well known for its immunosuppressive activity, the mechanisms of its action have been difficult to elucidate. This is partly due to its inability to exert its effects in vitro. To further elucidate the underlying mechanisms of TCDD effects, we screened for genes that are regulated by the in vivo TCDD treatment of mice that are challenged with allogeneic tumor cells. RNA, collected from lymphoid organs including the thymus, draining lymph nodes, and bone marrow, was reverse-transcribed to cDNA and hybridized to DNA arrays that consisted of 588 genes (ClonTech, USA). The expression of the NF-kappaB p65, c-jun, and p27(Kip1) genes was increased by the TCDD treatment, as previously reported. In addition, we found that the expression of several genes, which were not reported as regulated by TCDD, were modulated by TCDD. Some genes, including insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-6 (IGFBP-6) and IL-5R alpha, were upregulated; while other genes, including CD14, were down-regulated. The expression of the IGFBP-6 and IL-5R alpha subunit genes by TCDD in the thymus was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. Furthermore, TCDD effects on the expression of the IGFBP-6 gene was also observed with EL4 mouse thymoma cells. This suggests that IGFBP-6 may be involved in thymic atrophy, and EL4 cells may be used as an in vitro model for studying molecular mechanisms of thymic atrophy.

High resolution study of permanent photoinduced reflectivity changes and charge-order domain switching in Bi(0.3)Ca(0.7)MnO(3).

We report near-field and far-field optical microscopic studies of photoinduced effects in charge-ordered Bi(0.3)Ca(0.7)MnO(3). Unlike previously reported transient photoinduced effects in manganites, we have observed permanent reflectivity changes following local sample illumination with 488 nm light. High-resolution images of exposed regions reveal optical contrast on a submicrometer scale. This observation indicates that photonic band-gap structures may be created using holographic recording in manganites. We also present images of photoinduced charge-order domain switching in Bi(0.3)Ca(0.7)MnO(3).

Spin waves and electronic interactions in La2CuO4.

The magnetic excitations of the square-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet and high- T(c) parent compound La2CuO4 are determined using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Sharp spin waves with absolute intensities in agreement with theory including quantum corrections are found throughout the Brillouin zone. The observed dispersion relation shows evidence for substantial interactions beyond the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg term which can be understood in terms of a cyclic or ring exchange due to the strong hybridization path around the Cu4O4 square plaquettes.

alpha(6) Integrin is the main receptor of human papillomavirus type 16 VLP.

The present study was performed to determine the specific receptor of type HPV-16 using recombinant human papillomavirus-like particle (HPV-16 L1-VLP). The expression levels of alpha(6), beta(1), and beta(4) integrins were determined and compared with the amount of HPV-VLP binding in ten cell lines by flow cytometry. Our results show that the amount of VLP binding and the expression level of alpha(6) integrin are correlated, which was confirmed by an inhibition experiment using antibodies and by immunocytochemistry. Both the expression level of alpha(6) integrin and the amount of HPV-VLP binding were high in cervical cancer cell lines, as the type HPV-16 is the main cause of cervical cancer. The degree of binding of HPV-VLP matched the alpha(6) integrin expression level in cell lines but was not correlated with beta(1) and beta(4) levels, which suggests that alpha(6) integrin is the main receptor of HPV type 16.

Observation of two time scales in the ferromagnetic manganite La1-xCaxMnO3, x approximately 0.3.

We report new zero-field muon spin relaxation and neutron spin echo measurements in ferromagnetic (FM) (La,Ca)MnO3 which suggest at least two spatially separated regions possessing very different Mn-ion spin dynamics. One region displays diffusive relaxation, "critical slowing down" near T(C) and an increasing volume fraction below T(C), suggesting overdamped FM spin waves below T(C). The second region possesses more slowly fluctuating spins, a linewidth independent of q, and a decreasing volume fraction below T(C). The estimated length scale for the inhomogeneity is <or=30 A.

Raman scattering study of anomalous spin, charge, and lattice dynamics in the charge-ordered phase of Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (x > 0.5).

We report an inelastic light scattering study of the effects of charge ordering on the spin, charge, and lattice dynamics of Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (x>0.5). We find that charge ordering results in anomalous phonon behavior, such as the appearance of "activated" modes. More significantly, however, the transition to the charge-ordered phase results in the appearance of a quasielastic scattering response with the symmetry of the spin-chirality operator ( T(1g)); this scattering response is thus indicative of magnetic or chiral spin fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic charge-ordered phase.

Spontaneous thyroid-containing teratoma associated with impaired development in the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis.

Teratomas are rare in amphibians and the neoplasm described here, which had a significant thyroid carcinoma component, is the first tumour of this type to be reported in Xenopus laevis. The thyroid component contained moderately to well-differentiated acinar glands showing much hyperplasia, dysplasia, and reduced and distorted colloid reservoirs. Cartilaginous, neural, muscular, mesenchymal and gut-like epithelial components were also observed in this ventral mediastinal neoplasm, indicating aberrant proliferation from all three germ layers. This teratoma was only one abnormality in a complex of developmental changes, followed for 28 months, which appeared in a single generation of sibling 2-week-old Xenopus larvae. Two hundred larvae produced by an apparently normal adult pair initially showed ocular defects, including microphthalmia, anophthalmia and tumours projecting near the eyes. During further development up to 28 months, mediastinal tumours developed in nine frogs; these tumours were associated with reduced growth, the frogs reaching only 13-20% of normal weight, and greatly enhanced ventral pigmentation.
