Spin-torque diode effect in magnetic tunnel junctions.

There is currently much interest in the development of 'spintronic' devices, in which harnessing the spins of electrons (rather than just their charges) is anticipated to provide new functionalities that go beyond those possible with conventional electronic devices. One widely studied example of an effect that has its roots in the electron's spin degree of freedom is the torque exerted by a spin-polarized electric current on the spin moment of a nanometre-scale magnet. This torque causes the magnetic moment to rotate at potentially useful frequencies. Here we report a very different phenomenon that is also based on the interplay between spin dynamics and spin-dependent transport, and which arises from unusual diode behaviour. We show that the application of a small radio-frequency alternating current to a nanometre-scale magnetic tunnel junction can generate a measurable direct-current (d.c.) voltage across the device when the frequency is resonant with the spin oscillations that arise from the spin-torque effect: at resonance (which can be tuned by an external magnetic field), the structure exhibits different resistance states depending on the direction of the current. This behaviour is markedly different from that of a conventional semiconductor diode, and could form the basis of a nanometre-scale radio-frequency detector in telecommunication circuits.

Origin of the tunnel anisotropic magnetoresistance in Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/ZnSe/Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As magnetic tunnel junctions of II-VI/III-V heterostructures.

We investigated spin-dependent transport in magnetic tunnel junctions made of III-V Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As electrodes and II-VI ZnSe tunnel barriers. The high tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio up to 100% we observed indicates high spin polarization at the barrier/electrodes interfaces. We found anisotropic tunneling conductance having a magnitude of 10% with respect to the direction of magnetization to linearly depend on the magnetic anisotropy energy of Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As. This proves that the spin-orbit interactions in the valence band of Ga(1-x)M(x)As are responsible for the tunnel anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect.

Spin-dependent tunneling in magnetic tunnel junctions with a layered antiferromagnetic Cr(001) spacer: role of band structure and interface scattering.

The tunnel magnetoresistance effect (TMR), which is intrinsically determined by the interface monolayer of an electrode, was realized by using magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with a single-crystal Cr(001) layer inserted between a tunnel barrier and an electrode. The MTJs showed an oscillation of the TMR ratio as a function of the thickness of the Cr(001) layer with a period of 2 monatomic layers, which corresponds to the layered antiferromagnetic structure of Cr(001). These oscillations originate from electron scattering at the interface, due to the mismatching of the symmetry of the wave functions and band structure in Cr(001).

[Acute type A aortic dissection combined with surgical treatment with acute myocardial infarction].

Acute myocardial infarction, as a result of coronary malperfusion caused by acute type A aortic dissection, has been identified as one of significant factors relating to operative mortality. This complication could be diagnosed with a combination of electrocardiography and echocardiography in acute phase. However, the indication of coronary angiography and/or intervention has been controversial as it is time-consuming and renders additional stress to a critical patient requiring an emergency operation. We report a case of myocardial infarction successfully treated with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) at first, after that, recognition of dissection of aorta necessitated subsequent surgical therapy. In this particular case, coronary intervention in advance proved to be mandatory.

Development of the amygdalohypothalamic projection in the mouse embryonic forebrain.

The amygdalohypothalamic projection, a major component of the stria terminalis, is involved in the conduction of emotional and olfactory information integrated in the amygdala to the hypothalamus to elicit emotional reactions. Despite the extensive studies on functional aspects of the amygdaloid complex, developmental mechanisms of the amygdala and related structures are still poorly understood. To investigate the development of the amygdalohypothalamic projection in the mouse embryonic brain, carbocyanine dye was applied to the amygdala to label the growing axons anterogradely and to the hypothalamus to label the amygdaloid neurons retrogradely. The initial outgrowth of the stria terminalis was found to be as early as E11.5. The pathway crossed in a saddle over the internal capsule, another prominent connection in the developing forebrain of the mammalian embryo. Bipolar immature neurons were distributed along the stria terminalis at the telencephalo-diencephalic boundary, and the internal capsule was also surrounded by these cells. These cells expressed immunoreactivities to calretinin and the lot-1 antigen which has been shown to be involved in guidance of the developing lateral olfactory tract. Ultrastructural analysis revealed an adherens-like junction between the stria terminalis and the apposed cells, implying contact-mediated guidance. These results suggest that, in the development of the stria terminalis, the axonal outgrowth is guided by a mechanism similar to that of the developing lateral olfactory tract, a major amygdalopetal connection.

Reduced inflammatory pain in mice deficient in the differential screening-selected gene aberrative in neuroblastoma.

Differential screening-selected gene aberrative in neuroblastoma (Dan) protein is produced in small neurons of dorsal root ganglia. Thermal and mechanical allodynia and Fos expression in the spinal dorsal horn evoked by inflammation and neuropathic pain were investigated using Dan-deficient mice. Mice showed pain reactions induced by the introduction of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into their hind paw (inflammatory pain model) and after sciatic nerve ligation (neuropathic pain model). In the inflammatory pain model, thermal and mechanical pain thresholds in Dan-deficient mice were significantly higher than those of wild-type mice. The number of Fos-immunoreactive cells in the dorsal horn during the inflammatory period was significantly less in Dan-deficient mice. However, in the neuropathic pain model, no differences in thermal hypersensitivity, mechanical allodynia, or the number of Fos-immunoreactive cells in the dorsal horn were observed between the mice. These data suggest that Dan may be a neuromodulator in inflammatory pain.

Long-term evaluation of nutritional status using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in chronic hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients very often suffer from malnutrition with net loss of body muscle and fat stores. Since protein-calorie malnutrition has been considered to be highly associated with increased morbidity and mortality, it is important that the nutritional status is evaluated accurately and that long-term evaluation of the nutritional status is performed to obtain good outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients (28 men and 18 women) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis were studied. Nutritional status of the patients was examined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and anthropometry measurements after a hemodialysis session and 4 years after the initial measurement. RESULTS: Percent fat, the ratio of body fat (BF) to weight, determined by DXA correlated positively with body mass index (BMI) calculated from weight and height. There was also a significant positive correlation between lean body mass (LBM) determined by DXA and arm muscle circumference (AMC) calculated using the anthropometric method. In the study period of 4 years, LBM and bone mineral content (BMC) observed at the end point were significantly lower than those at the start. In contrast, BF and %fat at the end point were significantly higher as compared with those at the initial measurement. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that DXA is a reliable method for body composition analysis in chronic hemodialysis patients. Because the detection of early alterations in body composition may provide an early indication of the development of malnutrition, serial evaluation of body composition using DXA should be valid for assessment of the nutritional status.

Spin-polarized resonant tunneling in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Insertion of a thin nonmagnetic copper Cu(001) layer between the tunnel barrier and the ferromagnetic electrode of a magnetic tunnel junction is shown to result in the oscillation of the tunnel magnetoresistance as a function of the Cu layer thickness. The effect is interpreted in terms of the formation of spin-polarized resonant tunneling. The amplitude of the oscillation is so large that even the sign of the tunnel magnetoresistance alternates. The oscillation period depends on the applied bias voltage, reflecting the energy band structure of Cu. The results are encouraging for the development of spin-dependent resonant tunneling devices.

Development of the blood-testis barrier in the mouse is delayed by neonatally administered diethylstilbestrol but not by beta-estradiol 3-benzoate.

A group of newborn mice were treated with 1 micro g dose-1 individual-1 of diethylstilbestrol (DES) on alternate days, from days 1 to 11 postnatally. Another group of mice were treated similarly with 125 ng dose-1 individual-1 of beta-estradiol 3-benzoate (E2B). The testes were sequentially examined up to 84 days of age using light and electron microscopy. Spermatogenic cells in the DES-treated mice differentiated normally from birth until 17 days of age, when they differentiated into pachytene spermatocytes and remained at this meiotic prophase for the next 10 days approximately. The cells then began to differentiate further, ultimately forming spermatozoa by 49 days of age. Confocal and electron microscopy showed that the blood-testis barrier did not form until 28 days of age in the DES-treated mice, and a delay in the functional maturation of this structure, as the blood-testis barrier, was confirmed by intercellular tracer experiments. The arrest of spermatogenesis at the meiotic prophase may have been attributable to the DES-induced defective formation of the blood-testis barrier. No delay of the blood-testis barrier formation was detected in the E2B-treated mice. Thus, DES and E2B, both of which are known as potent oestrogenic compounds, had different effects on the Sertoli cells.

Mouse homologue of coq7/clk-1, longevity gene in Caenorhabditis elegans, is essential for coenzyme Q synthesis, maintenance of mitochondrial integrity, and neurogenesis.

coq7/clk-1 was isolated from a long-lived mutant of Caenorhabditis elegans, which showed sluggish behavior and an extended life span. Mouse coq7 is homologous to Saccharomyces cerevisiae coq7/cat5 that is required for biosynthesis of coenzyme Q (CoQ), an essential cofactor in mitochondrial respiration. Here we generated COQ7-deficient mice to investigate the biological role of COQ7 in mammals. COQ7-deficient mouse embryos failed to survive beyond embryonic day 10.5, exhibiting small-sized body and delayed embryogenesis. Morphological studies showed that COQ7-deficient neuroepithelial cells failed to show the radial arrangement in the developing cerebral wall, aborting neurogenesis at E10.5. Electron microscopic analysis further showed the enlarged mitochondria with vesicular cristae and enlarged lysosomes filled with disrupted membranes, which is consistent with mitochondriopathy. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that COQ7-deficient embryos failed to synthesize CoQ(9), but instead yielded demethoxyubiquinone 9 (DMQ(9)). Cultured embryonic cells from COQ7-deficient mice were rescued by adding bovine fetal serum in vitro, but exhibited slowed cell proliferation, which resembled to the phenotype of clk-1 with delayed cell divisions. The result implied the essential role of coq7 in CoQ synthesis, maintenance of mitochondrial integrity, and neurogenesis in mice.

Direct determination of interfacial magnetic moments with a magnetic phase transition in Co nanoclusters on Au(111).

The spin, in-plane and out-of-plane orbital and magnetic dipole moments of almost purely interfacial Co atoms were directly determined for Au/2-monolayer Co nanoclusters/Au(111) by angle-dependent magnetic circular x-ray dichroism (MCXD) measurements. The field- and temperature-dependent MCXD evidences a ferromagnetic(FM)-to-superparamagnetic phase transition in single-domain clusters with decreasing size. The interfacial moments are remarkably enhanced as compared with bulk values, verifying theoretical predictions. The FM clusters show strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, providing promise of applications for nanoscale magnetic bits.

Initial effects of the left ventricular repair by plication may not last long in a rat ischemic cardiomyopathy model.

BACKGROUND: Long term effects of left ventricle (LV) repair surgery (LVR) for ischemic cardiomyopathy are not well understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty-nine rats developed ischemic cardiomyopathy with large akinetic LV area 4 weeks after the left anterior descending artery was ligated. In a second surgery 4 weeks later, 33 rats underwent LVR by plication of the akinetic LV area (LVR group), and 36 underwent rethoracotomy alone (sham group). No medication was used in either group. All rats survived the second surgery. LV end-diastolic dimension as measured by echocardiography, LV fractional shortening, and the maximal end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (E(max)) as calculated from the data by catheter-tipped manometer and echocardiography improved in the LVR group after the second surgery, but LV end-diastolic dimension and E(max) gradually deteriorated as time passed. LV end-diastolic pressure improved 1 week after LVR but rose significantly 4 weeks after LVR. Brain natriuretic peptide mRNA was lower in the LVR group than in the sham group 1 week after LVR but not 4 weeks postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Initial improvement in LV function and neurohormonal status after LVR did not last for 4 weeks in this rat model when untreated medically. The mechanism of deterioration should be elucidated to improve long-term results of LVR.

N-Methyl-D-aspartate-induced c-Fos expression is enhanced in the forebrain structures related to emotion in Fyn-deficient mice.

Fyn tyrosine kinase is thought to be involved in the control of neuronal intracellular signal transduction elicited by neurotransmitter stimulation. Emotional disorders, such as fearfulness in Fyn-deficient mice, prompted us to investigate the neural mechanisms that lead to defective emotional expression by using functional neuroanatomical methods. In order to examine the reactivity of a specific neural network to excitatory neurotransmitter administration, we mapped the distribution of c-Fos-immunoreactive neurons after administering N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) to control and mutant mice at the subthreshold dose for seizure induction. The induction of neuronal c-Fos-immunoreactivity by NMDA was enhanced in the Fyn-deficient mice, and there was a much greater increase in immunopositive neurons in certain well-defined areas, such as the amygdaloid medial nuclear subdivisions, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, and midbrain periaqueductal gray, of the mutant. NMDA-induced c-Fos expression was attenuated by pretreatment with D-(-)-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid, a competitive NMDA antagonist, both in the control and the mutant mice. These findings suggest that the excitability of the projection system from the amygdala to the hypothalamus and midbrain, the main pathways of emotional expression, is enhanced in Fyn-deficient mice.

beta-estradiol 3-benzoate affects spermatogenesis in the adult mouse.

beta-estradiol 3-benzoate (E(2)B) (10, 16, 20, 40, 80 and 160 microg/kg body weight) was administered daily to experimental groups of adult mice for the following periods; 2, 3 days, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Morphological changes in the testes were observed by both light and electron microscopy. Exfoliation of the germ cells was observed in the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. The spermatogenic cycle, especially stage XII, was disordered. Spermatids older than step 6 were severely affected. Detected abnormalities in the spermatids were deformation of the nucleus and acrosome. Partial deletion in the Sertoli-spermatid ectoplasmic specialization was also observed. Germ cells younger than step 7 spermatids were not affected morphologically. These abnormalities were not detected in the mice treated with the chemical at less than 16 microg/kg body weight. It is concluded that the chemical seems to affect round spermatids metabolically, but the morphological effect can be detected only from the spermatids older than step 6. The effects of the chemical on adult mice were reversible.

Phenylnaphthalene compounds from the subterranean part of Vitex rotundifolia and their antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

A careful investigation of the subterranean part of Vitex rotundifolia has shown that this plant contains five novel lignans having a 1-phenylnaphthalene-type skeleton together with four known lignans. These structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. Furthermore, some of the isolated compounds showed antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Specific localization of the basigin protein in human testes from normal adults, normal juveniles, and patients with azoospermia.

Basigin is a transmembrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Specific localization of the protein in normal human testes, from those of a 2-year-old boy to those of a 50-year-old man, and in testes with Sertoli cell only syndrome and germ cell arrest, is reported. Basigin localization was determined using an immunohistochemical technique with an antibody against human basigin. In the normal adult testes, basigin was detected at the periphery of both spermatocytes older than zygotene and round spermatids. In the juvenile testes, it was expressed in accordance with the appearance of pachytene spermatocytes. In this study, pachytene spermatocytes were detected in an 11-year-old boy. Basigin was not expressed in immature testes with germ cells younger than pachytene spermatocytes, namely in testes from boys aged 2-9 years. In testes from adult patients with Sertoli cell only syndrome, basigin was expressed at the periphery of Sertoli cells, but localization was confined to the adluminal compartment of the seminiferous tubule. In testes with germ cell arrest, the protein was expressed on germ cells from pachytene spermatocytes to step 2 spermatids, where present. The results show that in the normal human testes basigin is expressed with the onset of spermatocyte differentiation. Because human basigin is expressed in adult testes with Sertoli cell only syndrome, the protein seems to be synthesized in Sertoli cells and expression continues after these cells dedifferentiate in the seminiferous epithelium.

Postnatal development of the testis in Japanese children based on observations of undescended testes.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the morphological aspects of the postnatal development of the testis in Japanese children. By investigating the normal development of the testis, clinicians in urology can give better strategies to their patients. In addition, the pattern of development will improve the understanding of the effect of xenoestrogens. METHODS: Biopsied testis samples of 68 patients with undescended testes aged between 2 and 21 years were examined by light microscopy. Nineteen patients with normal histology of the bilateral testes were selected for this study. For light microscopy, paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. In addition, using electron microscope, Epon sections stained with lead citrate and uranyl acetate were observed. Semi-thin sections stained with toluidine blue were also used for light microscopy. RESULTS: Gonocytes were observed in the testis of the 2-year-old boys. Spermatocytes developed by 4 years of age and spermatids developed by 11 years of age. The immature Sertoli-Sertoli ectoplasmic junction was observed as early as 4 years of age, and it was completed by 9 years of age. Mature myoid cells were observed by the age of 13 years. Immature Leydig cells were found at 7 years of age and the cells matured by 13 years of age. CONCLUSION: A pattern of postnatal development of the testis in Japanese children was presented.

Three-drug combinations of emivirine and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors in vitro: long-term culture of HIV-1-infected cells and breakthrough viruses.

Emivirine (EMV) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor currently undergoing Phase III clinical trials in HIV-1-infected patients. In this study, the anti-HIV-1 activity of EMV in combination with two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors was examined in cell cultures. The combinations EMV plus stavudine (d4T) plus lamivudine (3TC) and EMV plus d4T plus didanosine (ddI) synergistically inhibited HIV-1 replication in MT-4 cells. Although not statistically significant, EMV plus d4T plus 3TC appeared to be more synergistic than EMV plus d4T plus ddI. Synergism was also observed with any two-drug combinations, such as EMV plus d4T, EMV plus 3TC, EMV plus ddI, d4T plus 3TC, or d4T plus ddI. The three-drug combinations completely suppressed HIV-1 replication for at least 40 days after virus infection. Except for d4T, virus emerged in the presence of every compound alone or some combinations at lower concentrations. Susceptibility tests of the breakthrough viruses to each compound showed that the viruses obtained in the presence of EMV alone and 3TC alone were significantly less susceptible to EMV and 3TC, respectively. These viruses had specific amino acid mutations in their reverse transcriptase.
