Histocompatibility antigens (HLA) and uveitis.
The studies of histocompatibility (HLA) antigens have contributed to the understanding of the pathogenesis of uveitis. Acute anterior uveitis is associated with rheumatic disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis. HLA-B 27 antigen is present in 98% of these cases. There are genetic and environmental factors influencing the activity of the disease. HLA-B 27 was found to be associated with 43% of cases of acute anterior uveitis without systemic disease. In juvenile chronic polyarthritis with acute anterior uveitis HLA-B 27 helps in differentiating between ankylosing spondylitis and Still's disease. Specific HLA antigens were also found in other forms of uveitis such as Reiter's disease (HLA-B 27), Behcet's syndrome (HLA-B 5), VKH syndrome (HLA-Bw 22J) and ocular histoplasmosis (HLA-B 7). Despite these new findings, there are still many obscure factors and further studies are required to elucidate the pathogenesis of uveitis and to achieve its prevention.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: clinicopathological study of the eyes.
This paper described the clinicopathological findings in a patient who died of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. During his seven-month hospitalization, we had the opportunity to study the evolution of the disease and especially the variability of the ocular findings. The patient was presenting with a right exotropia and later developed chorioretinal changes in the fundus. The pathological examinations of both eyes revealed undescribed details, mostly in the anterior segments of the eyes, namely lacy vacuolization of the pigment epithelium of the iris, vacuolization of the nonpigmentary ciliary epithelium, and proliferation of the ciliary pigment epithelium.

Refraction in premature babies: a prospective study.
Refraction in 67 premature babies was examined and followed during seven years. There was continuous changing of refraction towards emmetropia in all refraction groups. Fifty-four percent of myopic eyes remained myopic at the age of seven years but in all the eyes myopia was of lower degree than at birth. In our series there was no relationship between myopia and RLF.

Shiny spots in the iris in chronic uveitis.
A case of chronic uveitis with shiny spots in the iris is described. Histologically the shiny spots proved to be Russel bodies. The nature of the Russel bodies is discussed.

Collagen fibril abnormalities in the extraocular muscles in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
The dermal collagen fibrils and the fibrils of the extraocular muscles and the conjunctivas of both eyes of a child afflicted with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) were studied ultrastructurally. The results were evaluated statistically. Biopsy material was used in all instances. The collagen fibrils from all involved tissues showed a high percentage of size variation. Abnormalities of shape were noted. In the reticular dermis, 48% of fibrils were of normal diameter, 23% were enlarged, and 29% were thinner than normal. In the extraocular muscles, 77% were of normal size, 14.5% were larger, and 8.5% were smaller. In the conjunctivas, 73% of fibrils were normal-sized, 22% were enlarged, and 5% were of small diameter. No small-sized fibrils were encountered in control extraocular muscles.

Psoriasis associated with anterior uveitis.
A patient with psoriasis and anterior uveitis is described. In her family the two entities of iridocyclitis and psoriasis occurred separately in two generations and appeared associated in the third generation. Tissue typing of the family revealed HL-A 27 antigen in two members and HL-A 17 in the other two members. The possible relevance of HL-A antigens to the two clinical entities is discussed.

Microphthalmos with orbital cyst: a clinicopathological report.
The clinical and histopathological findings in a case of microphthalmos with orbital cyst is described. The clinical interesting feature of this case was the bilateral coloboma which represented interference in the development of the eye at different stages of embryonic life.

Proptosis as presenting symptom of orbital foreign body.
An unusual case of orbital foreign body is presented. The foreign body had penetrated through a small wound of the upper lid and was asymtomatic for two years. Proptosis due to hyperostosis of the orbital roof was a presenting symptom of the foreign body.

Juvenile retinal detachment.
Among the total of 537 patients treated for retinal detachment 27 (5.02%) were under the age of 20. In 44.44 percent of the cases, there was a history of trauma. In 58.33% of the fellow eyes in this group of patients, retinal pathology was found. This pathology is considered to be a predisposing factor and trauma itself is only a trigger in causing retinal detachment.
