Tribenzylbutyrolactones and Dibenzyldiphenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzofuranones from Kyrtuthrix maculans

Ten novel compounds, maculalactones B-K (2-11), have been isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Kyrtuthrix maculans. Their structures, which involve either three benzyl groups substituted on a butyrolactone ring or two benzyl and two phenyl groups substituted on a 4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzofuranone nucleus, were determined by 2D NMR spectroscopy. Some speculation is made concerning the biogenesis of these two novel classes of natural products.

Identification of Anguilla japonica and A. marmorata elvers by allozyme electrophoresis

In Taiwanese waters, the morphologically similar elvers of Anguilla japonica and A. marmorata can be distinguished easily at the following loci examined: CK-D*, LDH-B*, sMDH-A* and sMDH-B*. Among these, CK-D* and LDH-B* have fixed allelic differences which can be used as a synoptic key for easy discrimination of the elvers of these two species.

Cytokine Regulation of iNOS Expression in Human Glial Cells

In this report, we review the evidence for the production of nitric oxide following cytokine activation of the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase by central nervous system glial cells, with particular reference to cells of human origin. The results suggest that cytokine regulation of this enzyme in human glial cells differs significantly from that found in cells of rodent or murine origin, with astrocytes rather than microglia being the major source of these products in inflamed nervous system tissue. The key activator of this enzyme in human astrocytes is IL-1 with IFNgamma acting synergistically. In contrast to glial cells of rodent or murine origin, no down-regulatory effects were noted with the cytokines IL-4, IL-10, and TGFbeta. The relevance of these data to human neuropathology is discussed.
