Dynamic stabilization in the double-well duffing oscillator

Bifurcations associated with stability of the saddle fixed point of the Poincare map, arising from the unstable equilibrium point of the potential, are investigated in a forced Duffing oscillator with a double-well potential. One interesting behavior is the dynamic stabilization of the saddle fixed point. When the driving amplitude is increased through a threshold value, the saddle fixed point becomes stabilized via a pitchfork bifurcation. We note that this dynamic stabilization is similar to that of the inverted pendulum with a vertically oscillating suspension point. After the dynamic stabilization, the double-well Duffing oscillator behaves as the single-well Duffing oscillator, because the effect of the central potential barrier on the dynamics of the system becomes negligible.

Characterization of Silver-Containing Pitch-Based Activated Carbon Fibers.

Silver-containingpitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared by activation with steam. Silver particles acted as catalyst by accelerating activation rate and increasing micropore size. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the surface morphology and behavior of silver particles in carbon fibers during activation. SEM images of the silver-containing fibers at about 70% burn-off were similar to those of nonactivated carbon fibers. Characterization of the ACFs studied was performed by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms, pore size distributions, silver content data, and adsorption capacities of iodine and methylene blue. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms and specific surface areas for the silver-containing ACFs were similar to those measured on the pure ACFs, i.e., ACFs to which silver had not been added. Also, adsorption capacities of iodine and methylene blue measured from liquid solutions were similar to those of the pure ACFs. However, the average micropore size of ACFs increased with increasing burn-off. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Effects of Ascorbic Acid on the Light-Induced Riboflavin Degradation and Color Changes in Milks.

Effects of ascorbic acid (0.025, 0.05, and 0.1%, w/v) on the light-induced riboflavin degradation and color changes in whole and skim milks were studied during 10 h fluorescent light illumination at 7 +/- 2 degrees C. As the time of light illumination increased, the riboflavin content in milks greatly decreased, resulting in 30.1 and 59.1% reduction of riboflavin in whole milk and skim milk after 10 h exposure to fluorescent light, respectively. The ascorbic acid treatment effectively protected the photodegradation of riboflavin in both whole milk and skim milk, and its effectiveness is concentration dependent. The 0.1% ascorbic acid treatments resulted in 50.0 and 25.5% inhibition of riboflavin reduction in whole milk and skim milk after 10 h fluorescent light illumination, respectively. The color parameters of lightness (L), greenness (-a), and yellowness (b) in both whole milk and skim milk decreased after light illumination. Ascorbic acid treatment also protected effectively the changes in greenness and yellowness in both milks during the light illumination.

Chromosome 8 Losses in Colorectal Carcinoma: Localization and Correlation With Invasive Disease.

Background: Allelic losses from the short arm of chromosome 8 (8p) are frequent in a variety of epithelial malignancies. In colorectal cancer, there are two discrete regions of 8p loss of hterozygosity (LOH), suggesting the existence of two putative tumor suppressor genes. Previous studies have shown an association of 8p LOH with tumor invasiveness. To better define the deletion extent and the clinical significance of these losses, a series of 41 colorectal cancers were examined for 8p LOH and correlated with clinical features. Methods and Results: Paired normal and enriched tumor DNA from the same individual was typed by polymerase chain reaction for 11 microsatellite polymorphisms and scored as positive or negative for 8p LOH. Loss of 8p markers was observed in 44% of the cases. Most cases had large deletions, but several had localized interstitial losses, enabling specification of two nonoverlapping regions of LOH. The telomeric region of loss is defined by the markers D8S262 and D8S133 at 8p22, and the centromeric region is proximal to NEFL. Clinical, histopathologic, and molecular data were obtained and a significant correlation of 8p LOH with microinvasion (invasion of lymphatics, vessels, or perineurium, ascertained by light microscopy) (P=.01) and also with loss of chromosome arm 18q (P=.001) was found. Conclusions: An association of 8p allelic loss with poor outcome was demonstrated. The correlation between 8p loss and 18q loss suggests that 8p LOH is a late event in the multistep model of colorectal carcinogenesis. 8p LOH may provide a clinically useful prognostic marker in colorectal cancer, thereby warranting further testing. The involvement of two independent loci on 8p is confirmed, and the refined localization of these sites will contribute to the eventual identification of these genes, which appear to play an important role in the progression of epithelial malignancies.
