[Aetiology and life-course of conduct disorder in childhood: risk factors for the development of an antisocial personality disorder].

OBJECTIVES: Conduct disorders are among the most common disorders encountered in child and adolescent psychiatry. They represent a heterogeneous group of disorders, each with a different psychopathology and a different life-course. While antisocial behaviour is only transient in some children, others show increasing criminal behaviour and delinquency, and some even develop an antisocial personality disorder. METHODS: This review presents substantial biological and psychosocial factors, as well as their interaction in the aetiology of conduct disorders. Changes in autonomic responsiveness are emphasized. RESULTS: Especially young children with conduct problems seem to be at greater risk for persistent and more widespread antisocial behaviour. Some of these children have emotional disturbances similar to those of psychopathic individuals. CONCLUSIONS: In order to prevent a negative course of the disorder, the relevance of primary care for children at high risk for antisocial behaviour is emphasized. In this context, the application of psychophysiological methods might be useful, in order to identify these children at an early stage.

[Rating and standardisation of pictures from the International Affective Picture System appropriated for children. Examination of children in a field sample aged six to twelve years].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate and standardise a number of pictures from the International Affective Picture System from Lang (CSEA-NIMH, 1999; Lang et al., 1999) relative to arousal and valence in 57 boys and 63 girls aged between six and twelve years. METHOD: 18 pictures with six positive, six negative and six neutral stimuli were presented to children aged between six and twelve years. The children had to rate the pictures with regard to the dimensions valence and arousal using the Self-Assessment-Manikin (SAM; Lang et at., 1980; Bradley et al., 1994), a visual rating scale. RESULTS: Children aged between six and twelve years were able to discriminate pictures and to rate them according to the two basic dimensions of emotion valence and arousal. CONCLUSIONS: Our selection of pictures from Lang's International Affective Picture System provides a number of standardised stimuli, which are suitable for affect induction for example in psychophysiological and neuroimaging studies in the age group of children between six and twelve years.

[Relevance of "psychopathy"-- concepts from the Hare measure for preventive detention].

Preventive detention can be ordered, if a person falls back into crime repeatedly and shows a "disposition to commit substantial offences". In the trial and at subsequent points of time expert opinions supporting this personal disposition have to be obtained. However up to now it is not clear on which basis such statements should be made. On the basis of a retrospective investigation of the author's own expert opinions the paper discusses the relevance of Hare's psychopathy concept for opinions on criminal disposition.
