Subwavelength focusing and imaging by a multimode optical waveguide.

A simple subwavelength focusing system formed by a straight or bent multimode waveguide is investigated numerically. The simulation results indicate that an appropriately designed multimode waveguide can focus the outgoing waves of a point source and form an image with a full width at half-maximum of less than half a wavelength in the near-field area at the other side of the waveguide. The physical mechanism of the subwavelength focusing for this imaging system is explained.

Three-dimensional photonic crystal of negative refraction achieved by interference lithography.

A three-dimensional bicontinuous photonic crystal of a bcc lattice with all-angle negative refraction that can be achieved at optical frequencies by interference lithography is proposed. A numerical simulation of the focusing imaging of a slab of this crystal was performed to verify the property of all-angle negative refraction. The dependence of the negative-refraction frequency range on the threshold of photoresist development and on the dielectric constant is also discussed.

Y-branch spot-size converter for a buried silica waveguide with large index difference.

Coupling loss occurs between a standard single-mode fiber and a silica waveguide when the difference between the refractive indices of the core and the cladding of the silica waveguide is high. We designed a Y-branch structure for use as a spot-size converter to reduce this coupling loss. The structure was tested with a three-dimensional beam-propagation method and was shown to exhibit a significantly reduced coupling loss, a low polarization-dependent loss, and a good tolerance of imprecision in fabrication. No additional fabrication steps are required for this proposed spot-size converter.

Finite-size effects of a left-handed material slab on the image quality.

The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a left-handed material (LHM) slab of finite length are studied, and the influence of the finite length of the slab on the image quality is analyzed. Unusual phenomena such as surface bright spots and negative energy stream at the image side are observed and explained as the cavity effects of surface plasmons excited by the evanescent components of the incident field. For a thin LHM slab, the cavity effects are found rather sensitive to the length of the slab; the bright spots on the bottom surface of the slab may stretch to the image plane and degrade the image quality.

Analysis of the birefringence of a silicon-on-insulator rib waveguide.

A detailed analysis of the polarization characteristics (birefringence) of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) rib waveguide is given. The fundamental TE- and TM-polarized modes of the SOI rib waveguide are calculated by a semivectorial finite-difference method. The rib width and the slab height of the SOI rib waveguide are normalized with respect to the total height of the silicon layer. A general relation between the two normalized parameters for a nonbirefringent SOI rib waveguide is obtained. According to this relation a nonbirefringent SOI rib waveguide can easily be designed. The fabrication tolerance for a nonbirefringent SOI rib waveguide is also analyzed, revealing that the tolerance can be increased by use of a larger total height of the silicon layer.

Analysis of characteristics of bent rib waveguides.

With a perfectly matched layer boundary treatment, a semivectorial finite-difference method is used to calculate the eigenmodes of a single-mode (SM) or multimode (MM) bent rib waveguide. A detailed analysis is given for the dependence of the bending losses (including the pure bending loss and the transition loss) on geometrical parameters of the bent rib waveguide such as the rib width, the rib height, and the bending radius. The characteristics of the higher-order modes are analyzed. It is shown that the bending loss of the fundamental mode can be reduced effectively by increasing the width and height of the rib. For an integrated device, undesired effects due to the higher-order modes of a MM bent waveguide can be removed by appropriate choice of the geometrical parameters. An appropriately designed MM bent waveguide is used to reduce effectively the bending loss of the fundamental mode, and a low-loss SM propagation in a MM bent waveguide is realized when the bending losses of the higher-order modes are large enough.

Analysis and design of a concave diffraction grating with total-internal-reflection facets by a hybrid diffraction method.

A novel hybrid diffraction method is introduced to simulate the diffraction and imaging of a planar-integrated concave grating that has total internal reflection (TIR) facets. The Kirchhoff-Huygens diffraction formula is adopted to simulate the propagation of the lightwave field in the free-propagation region, and a rigorous coupled-wave analysis is used to calculate the polarization-dependent diffraction by the grating. The hybrid diffraction method can be used to analyze accurately the imaging properties as well as the polarization-dependent diffraction characteristics of a concave grating. The dependence of several merit parameters of a concave grating with TIR facets on its basic geometric parameters is studied. Compared with one with metallic echelle facets, a concave grating with TIR facets shows a much lower polarization-dependent loss. Since more performance specifications can be considered in the design of a concave grating than with the conventional scalar method, design error can be reduced greatly with the present hybrid diffraction method.

Analysis of the polarization-dependent diffraction from a metallic grating by use of a three-dimensional combined vectorial method.

A three-dimensional combined vectorial method, which is based on the finite-difference time-domain algorithm and vectorial diffraction formulation, is introduced to analyze the interaction of a realistic focused beam with a metallic grating in an optical storage system. The diffracted field patterns and the detected signals are calculated for gratings with different geometries, and the polarization-dependent characteristics are studied. The combined method can give accurately the detected signals and the field pattern at any desired position of the optical storage system.

Accurate two-dimensional model of an arrayed-waveguide grating demultiplexer and optimal design based on the reciprocity theory.

An accurate two-dimensional (2D) model is introduced for the simulation of an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer by integrating the field distribution along the vertical direction. The equivalent 2D model has almost the same accuracy as the original three-dimensional model and is more accurate for the AWG considered here than the conventional 2D model based on the effective-index method. To further improve the computational efficiency, the reciprocity theory is applied to the optimal design of a flat-top AWG demultiplexer with a special input structure.

Subwavelength-diameter silica wires for low-loss optical wave guiding.

Silica waveguides with diameters larger than the wavelength of transmitted light are widely used in optical communications, sensors and other applications. Minimizing the width of the waveguides is desirable for photonic device applications, but the fabrication of low-loss optical waveguides with subwavelength diameters remains challenging because of strict requirements on surface roughness and diameter uniformity. Here we report the fabrication of subwavelength-diameter silica 'wires' for use as low-loss optical waveguides within the visible to near-infrared spectral range. We use a two-step drawing process to fabricate long free-standing silica wires with diameters down to 50 nm that show surface smoothness at the atomic level together with uniformity of diameter. Light can be launched into these wires by optical evanescent coupling. The wires allow single-mode operation, and have an optical loss of less than 0.1 dB mm(-1). We believe that these wires provide promising building blocks for future microphotonic devices with subwavelength-width structures.

General properties of N x M self-images in a strongly confined rectangular waveguide.

General properties of N x M self-images in a strongly confined rectangular waveguide are given. Analytical formulas are derived for the positions, amplitudes, and phases of the N x M images at the end of multimode interference section. The formulas are verified with numerical simulation of a three-dimensional semivectorial beam propagation method.

Analysis of multimode effects in the free-propagation region of a silicon-on-insulator-based arrayed-waveguide grating demultiplexer.

Multimode effects in the free-propagation regions (FPRs) of an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer based on silicon-on-insulator are considered. Some undesired multimode effects, such as the increase of the insertion loss and the cross talk, are studied by use of a method of three-dimensional guided-mode propagation analysis. It is found that the multimode effects for the edge channels are more serious than those for the central channel. For an AWG demultiplexer with a small channel number, the multimode effects can be minimized by choosing appropriate FPR parameters such as the length and the thickness of the FPR. The coupling coefficient between the FPR and an arrayed waveguide is sensitive to the thickness of the FPR.

Degeneracy analysis for a supercell of a photonic crystal and its application to the creation of band gaps.

A method is introduced to analyze the degeneracy properties of the band structure of a photonic crystal by making use of supercells. The band structure associated with a supercell of a photonic crystal has degeneracies at the edge of the Brillouin zone if the photonic crystal has some kind of point group symmetry. The E-polarization and H-polarization cases have the same degeneracies for a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. Two theorems on degeneracies in the band structure associated with the supercell are given and proved. These degeneracies can be lifted to create photonic band gaps by changing the translation group symmetry of the photonic crystal (the point group symmetry of the photonic crystal may remain unchanged), which consequently changes the transform matrix between the supercell and the smallest unit cell. The existence of photonic band gaps for many known 2D photonic crystals is explained through the degeneracy analysis. Some structures with large band gaps are also found through the present degeneracy analysis.

Optimal design method of a low-loss broadband Y branch with a multimode waveguide section.

An optimal design method for a low broadband silica-on-silicon Y branc is considered. A multimode waveguide section, which was used earlier to reduce the excess loss, is designed optimally when the light distribution at the end of the multimode waveguide section is matched to the profile of the symmetric supermode for the structure of the two branching waveguides. An optimization method that combines the genetic algorithm and a gradient-based search method is used to obtain the optimal geometrical parameters for the multimode waveguide section as well as the widths for the input and branching waveguides.

Analysis for the convergence problem of the plane-wave expansion method for photonic crystals.

The convergence feature of two types of plane-wave expansion methods commonly used for photonic crystals is analyzed. It is shown that the reason for the slow convergence of these plane-wave expansion methods is not the slow convergence of the Fourier series for the permittivity profile of the photonic crystal but the inappropriate formulation of the eigenproblem. A new formulation of the eigenproblem is presented to improve the convergence in the one-dimensional case.
