Entanglement of superpositions.

Given a bipartite quantum state (in arbitrary dimension) and a decomposition of it as a superposition of two others, we find bounds on the entanglement of the superposition state in terms of the entanglement of the states being superposed. In the case that the two states being superposed are biorthogonal, the answer is simple, and, for example, the entanglement of the superposition cannot be more than one ebit more than the average of the entanglement of the two states being superposed. However, for more general states, the situation is very different.

Lower bound on the number of Toffoli gates in a classical reversible circuit through quantum information concepts.

The question of finding a lower bound on the number of Toffoli gates in a classical reversible circuit is addressed. A method based on quantum information concepts is proposed. The method involves solely concepts from quantum information--there is no need for an actual physical quantum computer. The method is illustrated in the example of classical Shannon data compression.

Proposal for energy-time entanglement of quasiparticles in a solid-state device.

We present a proposal for the experimental observation of energy-time entanglement of quasiparticles in mesoscopic physics. This type of entanglement arises whenever correlated particles are produced at the same time and this time is uncertain in the sense of quantum uncertainty, as has been largely used in photonics. We discuss its feasibility for electron-hole pairs. In particular, we argue that junctions between materials in which electrons and holes, respectively, propagate ballistically and behave as "entanglers" for energy-time entanglement when irradiated with a continuous laser.

Classical analog to topological nonlocal quantum interference effects.

The two main features of the Aharonov-Bohm effect are the topological dependence of accumulated phase on the winding number around the magnetic fluxon, and nonlocality-local observations at any intermediate point along the trajectories are not affected by the fluxon. The latter property is usually regarded as exclusive to quantum mechanics. Here we show that both the topological and nonlocal features of the Aharonov-Bohm effect can be manifested in a classical model that incorporates random noise. The model also suggests new types of multiparticle topological nonlocal effects which have no quantum analog.

Bell-type inequalities to detect true n-body nonseparability.

We analyze the structure of correlations among more than two quantum systems. We introduce a classification of correlations based on the concept of nonseparability, which is different a priori from the concept of entanglement. Generalizing a result of Svetlichny [Phys. Rev. D 35, 3066 (1987)] on three-particle correlations, we find an inequality for n-particle correlations that holds under the most general separability condition and that is violated by some quantum-mechanical states.

Teleportation of a vacuum--one-photon qubit.

We report the experimental realization of teleporting a one-particle entangled qubit. The qubit is physically implemented by a two-dimensional subspace of states of a mode of the electromagnetic field, specifically, the space spanned by the vacuum and the one-photon state. Our experiment follows the line suggested by Lee and Kim [Phys. Rev. A 63, 012305 (2000)] and Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn [Nature (London) 409, 46 (2001)]. An unprecedented large value of the teleportation "fidelity" has been attained: F = (95.3 +/- 0.6)%.

Bell inequalities for arbitrarily high-dimensional systems.

We develop a novel approach to Bell inequalities based on a constraint that the correlations exhibited by local variable theories must satisfy. This is used to construct a family of Bell inequalities for bipartite quantum systems of arbitrarily high dimensionality which are strongly resistant to noise. In particular, our work gives an analytic description of previous numerical results and generalizes them to arbitrarily high dimensionality.
