Imidazolium ion-terminated self-assembled monolayers on Au: effects of counteranions on surface wettability.

Self-assembled monolayers presenting imidazolium ions at the tail ends (SAMIMs) having different counteranions have been prepared on Au, and the measurement of water contact angles of the surfaces proved to be an extremely valuable simple technique for quantifying the effects of counteranions on hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of SAMIMs, which will be extrapolated to the water miscibility of the related ionic liquids.

Catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation in a room temperature ionic liquid using chiral Rh-complex of ionic liquid grafted 1,4-bisphosphine ligand.

Introduction of imidazolium ionic liquid pattern to the catalyst not only avoided catalyst leaching but also increased the stability of catalyst in ionic liquid, and thus, the Rh-complex of 1,4-bisphosphine bearing two imidazolium salt moieties was successfully immobilized in an ionic liquid and reused several times for the hydrogenation of an enamide without significant loss of catalytic efficiency.

Chiral Co(III)(salen)-catalysed hydrolytic kinetic resolution of racemic epoxides in ionic liquids.

In the chiral Co(III)(salen)-catalysed HKR of racemic epoxides, in the presence of ionic liquids, Co(II)(salen) complex is oxidised without acetic acid to catalytically active Co(III)(salen) complex during reaction and, moreover, this oxidation state is stabilised against reduction to Co(II) complex which enables the reuse of the recovered catalyst for consecutive reactions without extra reoxidation.

Osmium tetroxide anchored to porous resins bearing residual vinyl groups: a highly active and recyclable solid for asymmetric dihydroxylation of olefins.

[reaction: see text] OsO(4) was simply immobilized onto resins such as Amberlite XAD-4 or XAD-7 bearing residual vinyl groups. The resulting osmylated resins are air-stable, nonvolatile, and much easier to handle than their homogeneous counterpart (OsO(4)). Moreover, the resin-bound OsO(4) exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the asymmetric dihydroxylation of olefins and was easily recovered and reused in five consecutive reactions without any significant decrease in product yield. Turnover time, however, was significantly increased for the fourth and fifth reactions.

Rh(I)-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of (E)- and (Z)-beta-(acylamino)acrylates using 1,4-bisphosphine ligands under mild conditions.

[reaction: see text] Rh-Me-BDPMI (1a) complex can be an effective catalyst for the hydrogenations of (E)- and (Z)-beta-(acylamino)acrylates, in which the Z-isomers hydrogenated with the same or even higher ee values than the corresponding E-isomers. The conversion yield and enantioselectivity of E- and Z-isomers were largely dependent on the solvent, and thus, the E-isomers were hydrogenated more effectively in CH(2)Cl(2), whereas the Z-isomers were hydrogenated more effectively in polar MeOH solvent.
