Strange star surface: a crust with nuggets.

We reexamine the surface composition of strange stars. Strange quark stars are hypothetical compact stars which could exist if strange quark matter was absolutely stable. It is widely accepted that they are characterized by an enormous density gradient (10(26) g/cm4) and large electric fields at the surface. By investigating the possibility of realizing a heterogeneous crust, comprised of nuggets of strange quark matter embedded in an uniform electron background, we find that the strange star surface has a much reduced density gradient and negligible electric field. We comment on how our findings will impact various proposed observable signatures for strange stars.

Asymmetric two-component Fermion systems in strong coupling.

We study the phase structure of a dilute two-component Fermi system with attractive interactions as a function of the coupling and a finite number asymmetry or polarization. In weak coupling, a number asymmetry results in phase separation. A mixed phase containing symmetric superfluid matter and an asymmetric normal phase is favored. For strong coupling we show that the stress on the superfluid phase to accommodate a number asymmetry increases. Near the infinite-scattering length, we calculate the single-particle excitation spectrum and the ground-state energy. A picture of weakly interacting quasiparticles emerges for modest polarizations. In this regime a homogeneous phase with a finite population of quasiparticle states characterized by a gapless spectrum is favored over the phase separated state. These states may be realized in cold atom experiments.

Charged and superconducting vortices in dense quark matter.

Quark matter at astrophysical densities may contain stable vortices due to the spontaneous breaking of hypercharge symmetry by kaon condensation. We argue that these vortices could be both charged and electrically superconducting. Current carrying loops (vortons) could be long-lived and play a role in the magnetic and transport properties of this matter. We provide a scenario for vorton formation in protoneutron stars.

Isolation of subgroup J avian leukosis virus in Korea.

Two subgroup J avian leukosis viruses (ALVs) were isolated from broiler breeder flocks, in which myeloid leukosis had occurred. The isolates could be classified as subgroup J ALV by the positive reaction in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with primers specific for subgroup J ALV. Two isolates replicated in chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells from the alv6 chicken line in which cells are resistant to subgroup A and E ALVs. In in vitro serum neutralization tests with other subgroup ALVs including ADOL-Hc1, the prototype of subgroup J ALVs isolated in the United States of America, two isolates were partially neutralized by antibody to ADOL-Hc1, indicating that Korean isolates and ADOL-Hc1 may be antigenically related, but not identical. When the PCR was done with a primer pair designed to amplify genes of E element and long terminal repeat of proviral DNA, the PCR product size of one isolate (KOAL-PET) was smaller than that of ADOL-Hc1, suggesting that some sequences in these regions are deleted.
