Relatively stable N-ligated [2Fe2S](2+) clusters with dipyrromethane capping ligands.

[2Fe2S] clusters with terminal N-ligation (His, Arg) and unique functions are increasingly recognized in biological systems. In this work three new [2Fe2S] clusters 1-3 with different 1,1'-dipyrrolmethane derivatives as chelating terminal ligands have been prepared and fully characterized, including by X-ray crystallography: (NEt(4))(2)[L(2)Fe(2)(mu-S)(2)] with L=Me(2)C(C(4)H(3)N)(2) (1), Ph(2)C(C(4)H(3)N)(2) (2), (CH(2))(5)C(C(4)H(3)N)(2) (3). These systems represent rare examples of synthetic [2Fe2S] complexes with N-donor capping ligands. While geometric parameters as well as spectroscopic and electrochemical characteristics of the new complexes are as anticipated, the chelating nature of the terminal ligands in 1-3 imparts a relatively high stability that will be advantageous for reactivity studies of the [2Fe2S] core.

Targeted construction of azido-bridged Ni4 complexes with decisive effect of mu-1,3-azide torsion on the spin ground state.

Highly preorganized pyrazolate-based dinickel(II) systems are shown to constitute suitable building blocks for the targeted assembly of azido-bridged Ni4 complexes with rectangular arrangement of the metal ions. A set of such complexes has been prepared and structurally characterized. mu-1,1-Azide binding within the bimetallic sub-units is controlled by the chosen topology of the pyrazolate ligand scaffold and gives rise to the anticipated ferromagnetic intradimer coupling. Overall magnetic properties of the Ni4 array, however, are mainly determined by the Ni-NNN-Ni torsion of the interdimer mu-1,3-azido linkages. According to the crystallographic results, these torsion angles vary over a wide range, and partial disorder of the mu-1,3-azide bridge in one of the compounds indicates high structural flexibility even in the solid state. Two of the compounds represent rare examples of molecular complexes with a Ni-NNN-Ni torsion angle of almost exactly 90 degrees . The resulting magnetic ground state (neglecting zero-field splitting) is either S = 0 or S = 4 depending on the Ni-NNN-Ni torsion, and in one case a drastic change is observed upon extrusion of lattice solvent.

Biomimetic hydrolysis of penicillin G catalyzed by dinuclear zinc(II) complexes: structure-activity correlations in beta-lactamase model systems.

A series of highly preorganized pyrazolate-based dinuclear zinc complexes has been studied as functional synthetic analogues of metallo-beta-lactamases, a class of bacterial enzymes that cause serious clinical problems because of their degradation of common beta-lactam antibiotics. We have investigated the hydrolytic cleavage of penicillin G mediated by the different dinuclear zinc complexes, and have deduced structure-activity correlations. While cooperative effects of the adjacent metal ions might be operative, these are found to either enhance or diminish beta-lactamase activity with respect to a single free zinc. Drastic differences in activity are ascribed to a lack of accessible binding sites after incorporation of the substrate within the bimetallic pocket of 2 and 4, whereas partial detachment of hemilabile ligand side arms in 1 and 3 opens up available coordination sites for nucleophile activation and/or for binding and polarisation of the beta-lactam amide oxygen atom. This interpretation has been corroborated by NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric evidence as well as by X-ray crystallography of several adducts formed between the pyrazolate-based dinuclear zinc scaffolds and the small substrate analogue oxazetidinylacetate (oaa), 5-7. In all adducts, the carboxylate group of oaa is the primary anchoring site and is nested in a bridging position within the bimetallic pocket. However, zinc binding of the beta-lactam amide oxygen atom has been confirmed crystallographically for the first time in 7, in which additional open-site coordination sites are available.

Chloride-bridged oxovanadium(V) complexes with alkoxyalkoxide ligands. Synthesis, structure, electrochemistry and reactivities.

A series of mixed alkoxyalkoxo chloro complexes of vanadium(V), [VOCl2(OCH2CH2OR)]2 (R = Me, Et, iPr, Bz), [VOCl2(OCMe2CH2OMe)]2 and [VOCl2(OCH2(cyclo-C4H7O)]2, were synthesised and characterised. The title compounds can be obtained either from VOCl3 and the alkoxyalcohols by HCl elimination or from the corresponding lithium alkoxides and VOCl3 by salt metathesis reaction. X-Ray diffraction studies revealed the title compounds to be dimers with chloride bridging ligands and intramolecular ether coordination. Electrochemical results obtained by cyclic voltammetry indicate irreversible, reductive behaviour. The interactions of the title compounds with oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus donor ligands were examined. Phosphorus and nitrogen donors lead to reduction products whereas tetrahydrofuran coordinates to the vanadium(V) centre by breaking the chloride bridge. All tetrahydrofuran complexes, [VOCl2(OCH2CH2OR)(thf)] (R = Me, Et, iPr) and [VOCl2(OCMe2CH2OMe)(thf)], have been characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The solid-state structures of these complexes show that they consist of six-coordinate monomers. Reaction of [VOCl2(OCH2CH(2)OMe)]2 with Me3SiCH2MgCl gave [VO(CH2SiMe3)3], which has been structurally characterised. The compounds were tested as catalysts for epoxidation and polymerisation reactions. They convert unfunctionalised olefins into the corresponding epoxides with moderate activity. They are good pre-catalysts for the polymerisation of ethene and oligomerise 1-hexene.

Effect of Zn...Zn separation on the hydrolytic activity of model dizinc phosphodiesterases.

From the study of highly preorganized model systems, experimental support has been obtained for a possible functional role of the Zn-(H)O...HO(H)-Zn motif in oligozinc hydrolases. The mechanistic relevance of such an array, which may be described as a hydrated form of a pseudo-terminal Zn-bound hydroxide, has recently been supported by DFT calculations on various metallohydrolase active sites. In the present targeted approach, the Zn...Zn distance in two related dizinc complexes has been controlled through the use of multifunctional pyrazolate-based ligand scaffolds, giving either a tightly bridged Zn-O(H)-Zn or a more loosely bridged Zn-(H)O...HO(H)-Zn species in the solid state. Zn-bound water has been found to exhibit comparable acidity irrespective of whether the resulting hydroxide is supported by strong hydrogen-bonding in the O(2)H(3) moiety or is in a bridging position between two zinc ions, indicating that water does not necessarily have to adopt a bridging position in order for its pK(a) to be sufficiently lowered so as to provide a Zn-bound hydroxide at physiological pH. Comparative reactivity studies on the cleavage of bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) mediated by the two dizinc complexes have revealed that the system with the larger Zn...Zn separation is hydrolytically more potent, both in the hydrolysis and the transesterification of BNPP. The extent of active site inhibition by the reaction products has also been found to be governed by the Zn...Zn distance, since phosphate diester coordination in a bridging mode within the clamp of two zinc ions is only favored for Zn...Zn distances well above 4 A. Different binding affinities are rationalized in terms of the structural characteristics of the product-inhibited complexes for the two different ligand scaffolds, with dimethyl phosphate found as a bridging ligand within the bimetallic pocket.

Redox site confinement in highly unsymmetric dimanganese complexes.

A set of highly preorganized pyrazolate-bridged dimanganese complexes L(Mn)MnX have been prepared and structurally characterized. They can be described as hybrid organometallic/Werner-type systems that consist of a low-spin CpMn(I)(CO)2 subunit (Mn1) and a proximate tripodal tetradentate {N4} binding pocket accommodating a high-spin Mn(II) ion (Mn2), with Mn...Mn distances of approximately 4.3 A and different coligands bound to Mn2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations (both the hybrid B3LYP and the pure BP86 functionals and the all-electron basis sets 6-311G and 6-311G*) confirm that the valence alpha and beta Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals (MOs) of these mixed-valent Mn(I)Mn(II) compounds have predominant Mn(3d) character and an almost perfectly localized nature: all five unpaired electrons are essentially localized at the Werner-type Mn2, whereas Mn1 possesses an effective closed-shell structure with the MOs of highest energy centered there. One-electron oxidation occurs in a clean process at approximately E(1/2) = -0.6 V (versus ferrocene/ferrocinium), giving the low-spin/high-spin Mn(II)Mn(II) species. UV/vis and IR spectroelectrochemistry as well as a detailed theoretical analysis reveal that the redox process takes place with strict site control at the organometallic subunit, while it does not significantly influence the spin and charge distribution on the Werner-type site. Positions and shifts of the nu(C[triple bond]O) absorptions are largely reproduced by the DFT calculations. These systems thus represent an exceptional example of the effect the unsymmetry of a dinucleating ligand scaffold has on the spin and charge distribution in homobimetallic complexes and might offer interesting prospects for the study of the cooperative effects of bimetallic arrays.

1,3,5-Triazine-based tricopper(II) complexes: structure and magnetic properties of threefold-symmetric building blocks.

Two new trinuclear complexes 1 and 2 that are composed of the three-directional ligand 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamino)-1,3,5-triazine (dipyatriz) and copper(II) chloride as well as a 1D polymeric zigzag system 3 assembled from trimetallic type 2 building blocks have been prepared and structurally characterized. While the triazine-N are not involved in metal coordination, each ligand bidentately binds to three copper ions via its three pairs of pyridine-N donors, and five-coordination of the copper is completed by chloride or dmso solvent molecules. Variable-temperature magnetic studies reveal weak antiferromagnetic coupling. Magnetic properties of the trinuclear entities and of the bis(micro-chloro) bridged pseudo-dimeric copper(II) subunits in 3 can be rationalized on the basis of the structural findings.

Anion-pi interactions in a carousel copper(II)-triazine complex.

Unprecedented anion-pi interactions are revealed for the electron-poor triazine rings in [L2(CuCl)3][CuCl4]Cl (L = hexakis(pyridin-2-yl)-[1,3,5]-triazine-2,4,6-triamin), where both the chloride ion and a Cl atom of [CuCl4]2- are located approximately 3.15 A above the ring centroids, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions for a Cl-...triazine complex. This confirms the importance of attractive anion-pi interactions for the supramolecular assembly of complexes with pi-electron-deficient heteroaromatics.

Reduction of benzophenone and 9(10H)-anthracenone with the magnesium complex [(2,6-iPr2C6H3-bian)Mg(thf)3].

The reduction of benzophenone with the magnesium complex [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)-bian)Mg(thf)(3)] (1), containing the 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene dianion, affords the pinacolato complex [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)-bian)Mg(thf)](2)[micro-O(2)C(2)Ph(4)].(C(6)H(6))(4) (2). The reaction of 1 with 9(10H)-anthracenone yields the 9-anthracenolato complex [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)-bian)Mg(OC(14)H(9))(thf)(2)] (3). Complexes 2 and 3 were characterized by elemental analyses, UV/Vis, IR, and ESR spectroscopy, as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 2 dissociates in solution with splitting of the bridging pinacolato unit, forming the biradical diimino/ketyl complex [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)-bian)Mg(thf)(OCPh(2))].
