A Turner patient with a 45,X,t(1;2) (q41;p11.2) karyotype.

The most common chromosomal anomaly is 45,X in the Turner syndrome. In addition to this, anomaly, mosaicism such as structural 46,X,i(Xq), 46,X,del(Xp), 46,X,r(X), 46,X,t(X;Y) and numerical 46XO/46,XX/47XXX are seen rather frequently. An infant with the Turner syndrome was found to have a karyotype 45X,t(1;2) (q41;p16) using high resolution banding. Based on our knowledge, we present the first case of 45X,t(1;2) (q41;p11.2), a karyotype in Turner's syndrome in the literature.

Collodion baby associated with asymmetric crying facies: a case report.

Collodion baby is a distinct subset of neonatal erythroderma that can be a clinical marker for a variety of underlying abnormalities. The phenotype includes parchment-like hyperkeratosis, pseudocontractures, ectropion, eclabium, absence of eyebrows, and sparse hair. Asymmetric crying facies is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system, less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, and respiratory systems, and rarely the endocrine system. We report a newborn with a collodion membrane and asymmetric crying facies. To the best of our knowledge, this association has not been previously published.

Effects of phototherapy on the growth plate in newborn rats.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of phototherapy and oxidative stress on the growth plate of newborn rats. Forty newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into a phototherapy group and a control group. Twenty of the rats received phototherapy for 7 days. All zones of the growth plate were assessed with quantitative histomorphometric analysis. Individual zonal lengths were measured for the reserve zone (RZ), the proliferative zone (PZ), the hypertrophic zone (HZ), ossifying cartilage (OC), and total zone (TZ) of the growth plate. Levels of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), an index of oxidative stress, were also evaluated. Compared with zonal lengths on day 7 after phototherapy between the two groups, the phototherapy group had significantly lower values than those of controls for RZ (5.13 +/- 0.36 vs. 6.4 +/- 0.85 mm x 10(-2); P < 0.001), PZ (20.6 +/- 3.0 vs. 29.25 +/- 1.68 mm x 10(-2); P < 0.001), HZ (15.4 +/- 1.44 vs. 20.87 +/- 1.12 mm x 10(-2); P < 0.001), OC (47.08 +/- 4.25 vs. 62.06 +/- 3.7 mm x 10(-2); P < 0.001), and TZ (88.15 +/- 6.56 vs. 118.48 +/- 4.50 mm x 10(-2); P < 0.001). Plasma MDA levels were correlated with the size of the PZ in the phototherapy group (r = -0.53, P = 0.01). In a multivariate regression model for all rats, being in the phototherapy group was the best predictor of the size of the TZ (beta = -0.94, P < 0.001), with the total variance explained being 88%. These results suggest that in newborn rats, receiving phototherapy is associated with early impairment of growth plate structure, and oxidative stress may be the main risk factor for growth plate injury.

The association of plasma homocysteine levels with serum leptin and apolipoprotein B levels in childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: An elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) level has recently been established as an independent risk factor for thrombosis and vascular disease. However, the relationship between hyperhomocysteinemia and cardiovascular disease and obesity remains controversial. The aim of the study was to investigate a possible relationship between plasma tHcy levels and measures of childhood obesity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty children and adolescents with exogenous obesity and 20 non-obese subjects in an age-and sex-matched control group were investigated. Fasting samples were collected for plasma tHcy, serum insulin, leptin, vitamin B12, folate, creatinine and lipid parameters. Anthropometric characteristics and body compositions were assessed in both groups. RESULTS: The obese patients had significantly higher tHcy levels than the non-obese controls (14.3+/-11.8 micromol/L vs 8.7+/-5.9 micromol/L; P=0.017). In both groups, plasma tHcy was positively related to serum leptin, but serum apolipoprotein B (apo B) levels were positively related to plasma tHcy levels only in obese patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates for the first time that leptin and apo B are main correlates of tHcy in obese children and adolescents and suggests that hyperleptinemia and increased apo B may contribute to impairment of tHcy metabolism in childhood obesity.
