Prevalence of anemia during pregnancy: results of Valencia (Venezuela) anemia during pregnancy study.

To determine the prevalence of anemia during pregnancy in Venezuelan pregnant women. By using a cross-sectional study, 630 Venezuelan pregnant women in their third trimester at labor from the Valencia Anemia during Pregnancy Study were studied. Anemia during pregnancy was defined according to WHO guidelines (Hb < 11 g/dl), iron deficiency was considered when serum ferritin level was < 12 ng/ml, and when serum folate level was < 3 ng/ml, it was considered as folate deficiency. 630 pregnant women (mean [+/- SD] age, 24 +/- 6.4 years) having an average of Hb 11.38 +/- 1.47 g/dl [95%CI = 11.27 to 11.50] were studied. No patient had hemolytic anemia nor clinical infections. Almost all patients were from low or very low socioeconomic status. Prevalence of anemia was 34.44% (severe: 1.8%, moderate: 15.2%, and mild: 83%). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was present in 39.2% (95%CI = 32.7 to 45.7), prevalence of folate deficiency anemia (FDA) was 11.98% (95%CI = 7.6% to 16.3%). Combined anemia (IDA and FDA) occurred in 11.52% (95%CI = 7.27% to 15.7%). Multivariate analysis showed that multiparous (odds ratio -OR-: 1.95, 95%CI = 1.28 to 2.97, p = .002) and supplement use of iron (OR: .55 (95%CI = .33 to .91, p = .02) are associated with IDA. The factors associated with FDA were: supplement use of folic acid (OR: .37 (95%CI = .19 to .71, p = .003) and appropriate prenatal control (OR: .51 95%CI = .27 to .96, p = .04). Prevalence of anemia during pregnancy was found to be high. Educational efforts should be stressed in order to encourage improvements in the prenatal care visits.

[Associated factors to depressive symptoms and somatic symptoms in climacteric women in the city of Temuco].

BACKGROUND: Depression is an important mental health problem. The Chilean Ministry of Health has considered depression in women as one of the health priorities for the country. AIM: To assess the prevalence of depressive and somatic symptoms and their risk factors in climacteric women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A special questionnaire was applied to 171 women (45 to 55 years of age), coming from a community organization (PRODEMU) and a private health institution (ISAPRE Banmedica). Risk factors for depression were determined using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 43%. Women with primary education had an odds ratio for depression of 2.49, compared with women with high school or university education. Other risk factor for depression was the lack of a renumerated job (Odds ratio 1.9). The risk factors for somatic symptoms were the presence of depressive symptoms (OR 3.2), lack of secondary or university education (OR 2.4), low income (OR 1.9) and having a current partner (OR 3.6). CONCLUSIONS: There is a high prevalence of depressive symptoms in the studied population of climacteric women. Lack of education and of a renumerated job are important risk factors for the presence of such symptoms. Women with a low level of education and with depressive symptoms have also a high risk of presenting somatic symptoms.

[High-risk human papilloma virus and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in women at 2 hospitals in Mexico City].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the high risk HPV (HR-HPV) association with Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) in women of two Dysplasia Clinics in Mexico City. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prolective case-control study was done. Women with and without security affiliation attended in Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (Hospital 1) and Hospital General de México (Hospital 2) were included in the study. Cases were women with histopathologic diagnosis of CIN and controls were women with negative dysplasia in cytologic study (Pap). Information was obtained by direct interview. HR-HPV was determined by Hybrid Capture II assay, in cervical samples. Bivariate and logistic regression analysis was done. RESULTS: One hundred and two cases and 192 controls from Hospital 1 and 89 cases and 66 controls from Hospital 2 were included. 83.3% and 77.3% of women from Hospital 1 and 2 respectively were positive to HR-HPV. The association HR-HPV and CIN in Hospital 1 was ORa = 40.6, C.I. 95% = 17-96.8; while in Hospital 2 there was not association. Age was an effect modifier in the HR-HVP and CIN association, in Hospital 1. It was observed a correlation between viral load and CIN degree. CONCLUSIONS: The HR-HPV infection frequency in controls and CIN I was higher than the reported in other studies. Age was a modifier in the HR-HPV association and CIN. In dysplasia clinics without medical referral system of patients is possible to observe similar risk factors to cervical cancer.
