Three-dimensional image fusion by use of multiwavelength digital holography.

We present three-dimensional (3D) image fusion by use of digital holography. We demonstrate experimentally that, through the image fusion technique with multiresolution wavelet decomposition, it is possible to increase the details and contrast of 3D reconstructed images obtained by multiwavelength digital holography. Although there is substantial activity in the fields of image fusion and holography, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of 3D image fusion by use of digital holography.

Detecting three-dimensional location and shape of noisy distorted three-dimensional objects with ladar trained optimum nonlinear filters.

We propose a filtering technique that uses laser radar (ladar) data to detect a target's three-dimensional (3D) coordinates and shape within an input scene. A two-dimensional ladar range image is converted into 3D space, and then the 3D optimum nonlinear filtering technique is used to detect the 3D coordinates of targets (including the target's distance from the sensor). The 3D optimum nonlinear filter is designed to detect distorted targets (i.e., out-of-plane and in-plane rotations and scale changes) and to be noise robust. The nonlinear filter is derived to minimize the mean of the output energy in response to the input scene in the presence of disjoint background noise and additive noise and to maintain a fixed output peak for the members of the true-class target training set. The system is tested with real ladar imagery in the presence of background clutter. The background clutter used in the system evaluation includes false objects that are similar to the true targets. The correlation output of ladar images shows a dominant peak at the target's 3D coordinates.

Objective interpretation of severity of SLS induced edema by stereoimaging.

BACKGROUND: In the evaluation of the severity of skin inflammations, visual scoring system is widely being used as a subjective method. However, it is well known that interobserver variations occur even between the interpretations of experienced dermatologists. OBJECTIVE: To develop a new objective and quantitative method for the evaluation of skin surface contours and for the assessment of severity in SLS-induced edema, a new investigatory tool based on the concept of "stereoimaging" was studied. Differences between binocular images were used by a stereoimage optical topometer (SOT) system capable of calculating skin surface topographic information, which was then used to produce a three-dimensional image. METHODS: We compared the results obtained by SOT with a visual scoring system after applying sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) to skin. The degree of edema was assessed qualitatively by visual scoring (0: none, 1: mild edema, 2: moderate edema, 3: severe edema). To quantify the severity, five three-dimensional parameters (S(a), S(z), SL, SA and SV) were used in the SOT analysis. RESULTS: The means of these five parameters increased significantly in visual grade 1+ compared to visual grade 0 and the means of the five parameters decreased significantly and proportionally as the visual grades increased from 1+ to 3+. A highly significant correlation was found to exist between the visual scoring results and the five SOT parameters. CONCLUSION: SOT can be used to evaluate the severity of SLS-induced edema objectively and can be extensively applied to evaluate the degree of severity in other inflammatory skin conditions.

Both the Smad and p38 MAPK pathways play a crucial role in Runx2 expression following induction by transforming growth factor-beta and bone morphogenetic protein.

The Runx family of transcription factors plays pivotal roles during normal development and in neoplasias. In mammals, Runx family genes are composed of Runx1 (Pebp2alphaB/Cbfa2/Aml1), Runx2 (Pebp2alphaA/Cbfa1/Aml3) and Runx3 (Pebp2alphaC/Cbfa3/Aml2). Runx1 and Runx3 are known to be involved in leukemogenesis and gastric carcinogenesis, respectively. Runx2, on the other hand, is a common target of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and plays an essential role in osteoblast differentiation. Runx2 is induced by the receptor-activated Smad; Runx2 mediates the blockage of myogenic differentiation and induces osteoblast differentiation in C2C12 pluripotent mesenchymal precursor cells. However, Smad does not directly induce Runx2 expression; an additional step of de novo protein synthesis is required. Here we report that Smad-induced junB functions as an upstream activator of Runx2 expression. Furthermore, not only the Smad pathway but also the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are involved in the induction of Runx2 by TGF-beta1 and BMP-2. Our results demonstrate that following TGF-beta and BMP induction, both the Smad and p38 MAPK pathways converge at the Runx2 gene to control mesenchymal precursor cell differentiation.

Optimum nonlinear composite filter for distortion-tolerant pattern recognition.

We describe a nonlinear distortion-tolerant filter for pattern recognition that is optimum in terms of tolerance to input noise and discrimination capability. This filter was derived by minimization of the output energy that is due to the overlapping additive noise and the input scene, and the output of the filter meets the design constraints obtained from the training data set. The performance of this filter was tested with an input scene containing one of the training data sets, a nontraining true target, and a false object in the presence of overlapping additive noise and nonoverlapping background noise. We carried out Monte Carlo runs to measure the statistical performance of the filter and obtained receiver operating characteristics curves to show the detection capabilities of the filter.
