Very low-refractive-index optical thin films consisting of an array of SiO2 nanorods.

The refractive-index contrast in dielectric multilayer structures, optical resonators, and photonic crystals is an important figure of merit that creates a strong demand for high-quality thin films with a low refractive index. A SiO2 nanorod layer with low refractive index of n = 1.08, to our knowledge the lowest ever reported in thin-film materials, is grown by oblique-angle electron-beam deposition of SiO2. A single-pair distributed Bragg reflector employing a SiO2 nanorod layer is demonstrated to have enhanced reflectivity, showing the great potential of low-refractive-index films for applications in photonic structures and devices.

Bragg fiber design for linear polarization.

A new design is presented for Bragg fibers that allows low-loss propagation for linearly polarized light. Predictions based on a simple ray model show that approximately doubling the thickness of the first wall layer results in low losses at TM-like boundaries while keeping TE-like boundary losses manageable. This contrasts sharply with conventional quarter-wave designs that are extremely low loss for TE01 modes but very high loss for linear polarization. We fabricate Bragg fibers based on this design concept in a Si/SiO2 system and verify experimentally that they propagate linearly polarized light with losses less than 6 dB/cm over a 60-nm spectral range.

Modal analysis of Bragg onion resonators.

From analysis of the high Q modes in a Bragg onion resonator with an omnidirectional reflector cladding, we establish a close analogy between such a resonator and a spherical hollow cavity in perfect metal. We demonstrate that onion resonators are ideal for applications that require a large spontaneous-emission factor beta, such as thresholdless lasers and single-photon devices.

High-quality-factor Bragg onion resonators with omnidirectional reflector cladding.

We propose to approximate a spherically symmetric Bragg resonator in an onionlike geometry. We develop a transfer-matrix theory for calculation of the quality factors and analyze the effect of the onion stem on cavity Q factors. We find that it is possible to achieve significant inhibition of spontaneous emission in an onion resonator with omnidirectional cladding layers.

Three-dimensional photonic-crystal emission through thermal excitation.

A three-dimensional tungsten photonic crystal is thermally excited and shown to emit light at a narrow band, lambda = 3.3-4.25 microm. The emission is experimentally observed to exceed that of the free-space Planck radiation over a wide temperature range, T = 475-850 K. It is proposed that an enhanced density of state associated with the propagating electromagnetic Bloch waves in the photonic crystal is responsible for this experimental finding.
