Nurse managers: the ties that bind.

The staff nurses' immediate manager directly influences an NICU's ability to attract and retain professional nurses. This makes it especially important that nurse executives and administrators identify opportunities to better meet the needs of their nurse managers and measure the impacts of their decisions. Data about front-line manager turnover need to be measured, reported, and examined. No longer can organizations afford to view managers as another expense; they are an asset on the balance sheet. Strategic planning for the recruitment and retention of nurse managers will be vital both to an organization's healthy bottom line and to the quality of its patient care.

Staff R & R: rewards and recognitions that work.

Too often managers focus on imperfect aspects of staff performance and neglect to celebrate the triumphs of the unit and its employees. By taking time to recognize individual and group accomplishments, participating in hospital celebrations of success, and integrating rewards and recognitions into the daily culture of the NICU, managers can foster a more positive work environment.

Getting high on performance!

The success of the NICU depends in large part on the manager's ability to continuously identify the high, middle, and low performers on the unit. To retain top performers, the manager must ensure a challenging work environment paired with zero tolerance for substandard performance. Middle performers need positive recognition and the opportunity to stretch for improved performance. Once employees have been categorized, the manager needs to consistently develop performance improvement plans for each one.

There are tasks best done on an individual basis when caring for a neonate, but the ultimate outcome for infants and their families results from a team effort. Incorporating ten strategies drawn from football can help the NICU manager create and foster effective teamwork.
