Quantum dynamics of the H + O2 --> O + OH reaction on an accurate ab initio potential energy surface.

We report exact time-dependent and time-independent quantum mechanical studies of the title reaction on an accurate ab initio potential energy surface of Xu et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2005, 122, 24305). The J = 0 reaction probabilities for several reactant states show sharp resonance structures superimposed on relatively low backgrounds, and they are remarkably different from existing quantum results on an earlier potential energy surface (DMBE-IV). The new findings reported here suggest that our current understanding of this important reaction might require significant revision.

Revelation of non-statistical behavior in HO2 vibration by a new ab initio potential energy surface.

The hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) has long been considered as a prototype for statistical vibrational dynamics. In this work, however, it is shown that the bound state energy levels (up to the dissociation threshold) and low-lying resonances of the HO2 system (J=0) obtained on a new ab initio potential energy surface exhibit surprisingly large regularity. The implications of the non-statistical behavior of the HO2 system in unimolecular and bimolecular reactions are discussed.

Quantum statistical study of O + O2 isotopic exchange reactions: cross sections and rate constants.

Using a wave packet based statistical model, we compute cross sections and thermal rate constants for various isotopic variants of the O + O2 exchange reaction on a recently modified ab initio potential energy surface. The calculation predicts a highly excited rotational distribution and relatively cold vibrational distribution for the diatomic product. A small but important threshold effect was identified for the (16)O + 18O2 reaction, which is suggested to contribute to the experimentally observed negative temperature dependence of the rate ratio, k(18O + 16O2)/k(16O + 18O2). Despite reasonable agreement with quasiclassical trajectory results, however, the calculated thermal rate constants are smaller than experimental measurements by a factor from 2 to 5. The experimentally observed negative temperature dependence of the rate constants is not reproduced. Possible reasons for the theory-experiment discrepancies are discussed.

Quantum mechanical rate constants for H + O2 <--> O + OH and H + O2 --> HO2 reactions.

Canonical rate constants for both the forward and reverse H + O(2) <--> O + OH reactions were calculated using a quantum wave packet-based statistical model on the DMBE IV potential energy surface of Varandas and co-workers. For these bimolecular reactions, the results show reasonably good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data up to 1500 K. In addition, the capture rate for the H + O(2) --> HO(2) addition reaction at the high-pressure limit was obtained on the same potential using a time-independent quantum capture method. Excellent agreement with experimental and quasi-classical trajectory results was obtained except for at very low temperatures, where a reaction threshold was found and attributed to the centrifugal barrier of the orbital motion.

Exact quantum dynamics of N(2D) + H2 --> NH + H reaction: cross-sections, rate constants, and dependence on reactant rotation.

Using an exact Chebyshev wave packet method, initial state-specified (upsilon(i)=0, j(i)=0,2) integral cross-sections and rate constants are obtained for the title reaction on the latest ab initio potential energy surface. Reaction probabilities up to J=29 are dependent on the reactant rotation and show mild oscillations superimposed on a broad background. Due to a barrier in the entrance channel, the cross sections increase with energy with clear thresholds and the rate constants vary with temperature in the Arrhenius form. The calculated canonical rate constant is in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Our results also indicate that the quasiclassical trajectory method underestimates the rate due to the neglect of tunneling, while the quantum statistical approach overestimates because of the short lifetime of the reaction intermediate.

A new ab initio potential-energy surface of HO2(X2A") and quantum studies of HO2 vibrational spectrum and rate constants for the H + O2 <--> O + OH reactions.

A new global potential-energy surface for the ground electronic state of HO(2)(X(2)A(")) has been developed by three-dimensional cubic spline interpolation of more than 15 000 ab initio points, which were calculated at the multireference configuration-interaction level with Davidson correction using the augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple zeta basis set. Low-lying vibrational states were obtained in this new potential using the Lanczos method and assigned. The calculated vibrational frequencies are in much better agreement with the available experimental band origins than those obtained from a previous potential. In addition, rate constants for the H+O(2) <--> O + OH reactions were obtained using a wave-packet-based statistical model. Reasonably good agreement with experimental data was obtained. These results demonstrate the accuracy of the potential.

Resonances of CH2(a 1A1) and their roles in unimolecular and bimolecular reactions.

Low-lying resonances of the CH2(a 1A1) system (J=0) in an accurate ab initio potential energy surface are studied using a filter-diagonalization method. The width of these resonances fluctuates by more than two orders of magnitude and on average increases with the energy. Analysis of the resonance states concludes that the unimolecular decay of the excited molecular system near the dissociation threshold is neither mode specific nor statistical state specific. This is apparently due to remnant regularity embedded in the largely chaotic classical phase space, as evidenced by periodic orbit analysis. As a result, the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus and statistical adiabatic channel models overestimate the average unimolecular decay rate. The implications of the resonances for the bimolecular C(1D)+H2 reaction are also discussed.

Quantum statistical and wave packet studies of insertion reactions of S(1D) with H2, HD, and D2.

A thorough theoretical investigation of the reactions between S(1D) and various hydrogen isotopomers (H2, D2, and HD) has been carried out using a recent ab initio potential energy surface. State-resolved integral and differential cross sections, thermal rate constants, and their dependence on energy or temperature were obtained from quantum mechanical capture probabilities within a statistical model. For comparison, the J=0 reaction probabilities were also computed using an exact wave packet method. The statistical results are in excellent agreement with available exact differential and integral cross sections. The comparison with experimental results shows that the agreement is reasonably good in general, but some significant differences exist, particularly for the SD/SH branching ratio in the S(1D)+HD reaction.

Reactions of C(1D) with H2 and its deuterated isotopomers, a wave packet study.

Using a Chebyshev wave packet method, total and state-resolved reaction probabilities (J=0) were calculated for the reactions of C(1D) with various hydrogen isotopomers (H2, D2, and HD, nu i=0, j i=0) on a recent ab initio potential energy surface. For all the isotopic variants, it was found that the initial state specified reaction probabilities have no energy threshold and are strongly oscillatory, indicative of the involvement of long-lived resonances in this barrierless reaction. The J=0 product vibrational and rotational distributions for all three isotopic reactions, and the CH/CD branching ratio for the C+HD reaction, show strong dependence on the collision energy, further underscoring the important role played by the resonances. The generally decaying vibrational distributions and highly excited rotational distributions, which corroborate an insertion mechanism, and the dominance of the CD+H channel in the C+HD reaction are consistent with existing experimental observations. Initial state specified integral cross sections and rate constants were estimated using a capture model. The estimated rate constants were found to be close and in the order kHD>kH2>kD2. Finally, a method to calculate branching ratio in the C+HD reaction is proposed.

A wave packet based statistical approach to complex-forming reactions.

A wave packet based statistical model is suggested for complex-forming reactions. This model assumes statistical formation and decay of the long-lived reaction complex and computes reaction cross sections and their energy dependence from capture probabilities. This model is very efficient and reasonably accurate for reactions dominated by long-lived resonances, as confirmed by its application to the C((1)D)+H(2) reaction.
