[Evaluation on beta-carotene-vitamin A equivalence of middle-aged subjects in Chinese adults].

OBJECTIVE: As an extended study of beta-Carotene-vitamin A equivalence in Chinese adults, we carried out an experiment on 10 (5 males and 5 females) rural volunteers aged 38 - 49 years, which would be complementary to the early reported study on subjects aged 50 - 60 years. METHODS: Ten healthy Chinese adult volunteers aged 38-49 years were recruited in a 56 days experiment, which included residency in the Metabolic Research Unit (first 10 days and in home (last 46 days). A physiological dose of 2H8 beta-C (11,011 (nmole or 6 mg) in oil was given with a liquid diet (25% energy from fat) to the volunteers in the first day of the experiment. Three days after the 2H8 beta-C, each volunteer took a reference dose of 2H8 retinyl acetate (8,915 nmole or 3 mg) in oil with the same liquid diet. Serum samples were collected at 0, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 hours of the first and the fourth days of study, and fasting serum samples were also collected daily in first 10 days and then weekly at morning of 14th, 21st, 28th, 35th, 42nd, 49th and 56th day after a 12-hours overnight fast. Serum retinol and carotenoids concentrations were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Also retinol fraction was extracted from serum and isolated by HPLC. The serum retinal enrichments were determined by using gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry with electron capture negative chemical ionization (GC-MS). RESULTS: The average 52-day area under the serum 2H4 retinol response curve (from the 2H8 beta-C dose) was (1289 +/- 547) nmol/d and the 52-day area under the serum 2H8 retinol response curve (from the 2H8 retinyl acetate dose) was (3560 +/- 1058) nmol/d. By using 2H8 retinyl acetate as the vitamin A reference, the 2H4 retinol formed from 2H8 beta-C (11,011 nmol) was calculated to be equivalent to (3434 +/- 1449) nmol of retinol. The calculated conversion factor of beta-C to retinol ranged from 2.00 - 9.61 to 1 with an average of (3.89 +/- 2.76) to 1 on a molar basis, or 3.76 - 18.05 to 1 with an average of (7.30 +/- 5.18) to 1 on a weight basis. CONCLUSION: The conversion of beta-C to vitamin A in 10 middle-aged Chinese adults had been quantitatively determined by using a stable isotope reference method, and an average conversion ratio of 7.30 : 1 to 1 on a weight basis was found in this study.

[Evaluation on glycine chelated iron (II) in improving nutritional anemia in rats].

OBJECTIVE: In order to evaluate the efficacy of glycine chelated iron (II) in improving nutritional anemia in rats. METHODS: After weaning wistar rats, weighing 50 - 60g, were fed the iron deficient diet for three weeks, whole blood was taken from rat's tail to measure Hb, then the rats were randomly divided into five groups by Hb, that is the control group fed with iron deficient diet, three groups fed the diets supplemented with different glycine chelated iron (II), and another group fed with the diet added with lactate iron. Each group was fed respective diets for four weeks and indicators related to iron-deficient nutritional anemia were evaluated. RESULTS: The addition of glycine chelated iron (II) did improve the growth and development of rats, increase the hemoglobin level and the iron retention in spleen, decrease free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) content in whole blood, and there was no significant difference between three supplemental groups with glycine chelated iron (II) and the group with lactate iron. CONCLUSION: glycine chelated iron (II) can be used as a reasonable iron supplement in improving iron-deficient nutritional anemia.

[Efficiency of NaFeEDTA fortified soy sauce on anemia prevention].

OBJECTIVE: Study the efficiency of the NaFeEDTA fortified soy sauce on anemia prevention among the children from iron deficiency anemia (IDA) prevalence region. METHODS: A double blind controlled random intervention in Bijie, Guizhou was conducted for 18 months. The finger hemoglobin (Hb) was detected at baseline and after 6, 12, 18 months intervention. Anthropometrics were also taken at baseline and after 12 months intervention. RESULTS: The Hb level increased significantly in the intervention group [(111.08 +/- 11.31) g/L at baseline and (122.99 +/- 8.43) g/L after 12 months], the anemia prevalence decreased markedly (58.0% at baseline, 17.6% after 12 months). After 12 months intervention, a significantly gain of the weight for age Z-score (WAZ) was observed in the intervention group. The abdomen and triceps skin folders were thicker in the intervention group, and the intervention group had greater gains of the abdomen and triceps skin folders than those in the control group. CONCLUSION: The soy sauce fortified with NaFeEDTA can increase the Hb level and decrease the prevalence of anemia in the children, and the NaFeEDTA fortified soy sauce can enhance the weight gain and the pull up of the subcutaneous fat. It is suggested that using NaFeEDTA fortified soy sauce in high IDA prevalence population was an efficient way for IDA preventing.

[Effect of daily or once weekly iron supplementation on growth and iron status of preschool children].

OBJECTIVE: The effect of daily and once weekly iron supplementation on hemoglobin(Hb), serum ferritin (SF), erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EFP) in whole blood, prevalence of iron deficiency, body weight and height of preschool children was compared in this study. METHODS: Preschool children (n = 353) from one kindergarten in Baotou City, was recruited. All children were divided into three groups by class, and received either daily or once weekly iron supplementation, or a placebo (control) for 14 weeks. RESULTS: The prevalence of iron deficiency was reduced in both intervention groups, and the rate in the group supplemented with iron once weekly was significantly lower than that of the control group(P < 0.05). The levels of Hb, SF, increased after once weekly and daily iron supplementation. Weight gain and WAZ were greater in children who received daily supplement than in those who received placebo. Height gain and HAZ were not significantly different among three groups. CONCLUSION: Daily micronutrient supplement can improve growth of preschool children. Once weekly iron supplement is effective same as daily supplement in improving iron status and reducing the prevalence of iron deficiency in the preschool children.

[Protection of zinc and selenium content of brain and blood on learning and memory exposed to lead in growing rats].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was to explore the relations between lead levels of brain and blood on learning and memory, and to determine the antagonization of selenium and zinc on lead toxicity in brain and blood. METHODS: The growing rats were fed with diet added with different levels of selenium, zinc and lead for 12 weeks. RESULTS: (1) The lead levels of brain and blood of rats exposed to lead was higher than that of the control group; the lead levels of brain and blood administrated lead decreased following the increased in selenium and zinc levels in the diet. (2) Error frequencies and total time in water-maze significantly reduced in the groups exposed to lead. (3) Error frequencies and total time in water-maze and lead levels of brain and blood presented positive relation. CONCLUSION: The present study indicated that supplementary suitable zinc or/and selenium could alleviate the lead toxicity on the brain and blood of rats.

[Advanced progress on child nutrition and bone development].

The development to maturity of human bone has been achieved facing infants, childhood, adolescents and young adults, undergoing a long time and finally reaching the bone mass to the maximal peak. Recently, most of studies related to osteoporosis emphasized on increasing the peak bone mass attained from childhood or adolescence to young adult. The present paper reviews the factors influenced the peak bone mass, calcium status and bone development, the effect of milk consumption on bone mass and body growth and the prospects on the further studies in this field.

[Study on the effect of micronutrients supplementation on health status of children].

To study the effect of multi-micronutrients supplementation on nutritional status of children, 220 students aged 8-12 years were observed for 6 months. A half of them were given the supplements, another half placebo. The results showed that in comparison with the placebo, the supplemented children had a higher urine excretion of vitamin B2 and vitamin C after loading; a higher concentration of serum 25-OH-D3, a high content of hydroxy-proline and hydroxy-proline/creatinine ratio in fast urine, and a higher bone mineral content and bone mass density of the mid-ulna. The supplemented children performed significantly better than the placebo in reading speed, learning capacity and arithmetic examinations. It is concluded that micronutrients supplementation played a notable rule in resulting better nutritional status and learning ability of school children.
