[Experimental study on the artificial bladder reflex arc established in therapy of flaccid bladder after spinal cored injury].

OBJECTIVE: To establish the artificial bladder reflex arc by the normal body reflex pathway above the horizon of spinal cord injury to reinnervate the flaccid bladder and restore bladder micturition function. METHODS: An intradural microanastomosis was performed on the L6 ventral root to the S2 ventral root. After axonal regeneration, the "patellar ligament-spinal cord center-bladder" reflex pathway was reestablished. A long-term function of the reflex arc was observed in the nerve electrophysiological experiment, detrusor electromyography experiment, and urodynamic testing 8 months after anastomosis. RESULTS: Trains of the stimuli (200 microV, 5 ms) in the left L6 dorsal root and the nerve at the anastomosized site resulted in motor evoked potential from the distal to the anastomosized site before and after the spinal cord was destroyed horizontally between S1 and S4 segment levels in 2 Beagle dogs. The figure and amplitude of the evoked potential were similar to those of the control and general stability which showed a noninterventional wave. The urodynamic test revealed a rapid increase of the bladder pressure and a minor increase in the abdominal pressure. This showed that the bladder detrusor mainly resulted in the pressure increase. The bladder pressure increased to 60% of the normal on average compared with the controls when resulted in the left L6 dorsal root and the nerve anastomosized site were stimulated. CONCLUSION: The long-term observation by the nerve electrophysiological experiment, detrusor electromyography experiment, and urodynamic test indicate that the new artificial reflex arc can be established successfully. The somatic motor axons can regenerate into the parasympathetic endoneurial tubes of the autonomic nerve.

Mapping a resistance gene in wheat cultivar Yangfu 9311 to yellow mosaic virus, using microsatellite markers.

Wheat yellow mosaic disease, which is caused by wheat yellow mosaic bymovirus (WYMV) and transmitted by soil-borne fungus, results in severe damage on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in China. For development of resistant cultivars to reduce wheat yield losses due to wheat yellow mosaic disease, resistance test and genetic analysis indicated that a single dominant gene in wheat cultivar Yangfu 9311 contributed to the resistance. Bulk segregant analysis was used to identify microsatellite markers linked to the resistance gene in an F(2) population derived from the cross Yangfu 9311 (resistant) x Yangmai 10 (susceptible). Microsatellite markers Xwmc41, Xwmc181, Xpsp3039, and Xgwm349 were co-dominantly or dominantly linked with the gene responsible for WYMV resistance at a distance of 8.1-11.6 cM. Based on the wheat microsatellite consensus map and the results from amplification of the cultivar Chinese Spring nulli-tetrasomic stocks, the resistance gene to wheat yellow mosaic disease derived from Yangfu 9311, temporarily named as YmYF, was thus mapped on the long arm of chromosome 2D (2DL).

[Tissue flap transferring for wound repair of the clavicle].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the result of tissue flap transferring for wound repair of the clavicle. METHODS: From 1994 to 2000, 3 patients (1 with clavicle osteosynthesis, 1 with chronic clavicle osteomyelitis, and 1 with radioactive ulcer in clavicular region accompanied by chronic osteomyelitis of clavicle) were reconstructed with turnover adipofascial flap, myocutaneous flap of pectoris, and myocutaneous flap of latissimus dorsal respectively. The outcome was observed. The operation principles of tissue flaps transferring for wound repair of the clavicle were summarized. RESULTS: Follow-ups were done for 2 months to 7 years. All tissue flaps survived well and the wounds in clavicular region were healed well. There was no recurrence of chronic clavicle osteomyelitis. CONCLUSION: Turnover adipofascial flap, myocutaneous flap of pectoris and latissimus dorsal are often used for wound repair of the clavicle. Most of the wounds of the clavicle can be repaired by turnover adipofascial flap. Myocutaneous flap of pectoris and latissimus dorsal are more suitable for wound repair with chronic clavicle osteomyelitis. In the case of radioactive ulcer of the clavicular region, myocutaneous flap of latissimus dorsal transposition is a better alternative for wound repair.

Surgical management for sciatic nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize surgical treatments and their corresponding curative effects on sciatic nerve injuries. METHODS: Surgical treatments on sciatic nerve injury were performed in 28 patients from January 1990 to July 2000. The treatments included neurolysis, neurolysis plus partial nerve anastomosis, nerve anastomosis and nerve transplantation. The curative effect was evaluated according to Sunderland criteria. RESULTS: Of 28 cases, 22 patients were followed up with a follow-up period of 13 months to 5 years (average 30 months). Of 22 nerves, 7 were excellent, 5 good, 7 fair and 3 poor, with an excellence rate of 54.5%. CONCLUSIONS: The fair results of sciatic nerve injury are related to its structural character. Surgical exploration should be performed if nerve function does not recover 3 months after primary operation and if Tinel's sign and electromyogram show no signs of nerve regeneration. Electrophysiological monitoring in the operation is useful in electing surgical methods and predicting the results of nerve anastomosis.

[Bladder controller in bladder function reconstruction of paraplegic dogs].

OBJECTIVE: To observe whether bladder controller can restore bladder function in paraplegic dogs. METHODS: Four dogs were studied after their T(10) spinal cord was transected. Electrodes implanted around S(2) bilaterally were connected to subcutaneous recievers. Microsurgical techniques were employed in dorsal rhizotomy at S(1 - 3) intradural segment. After daily stimulation, the results of bladder controller were evaluated by micturition and vesicography. RESULTS: Micturition was given under electrical stimulation with a urine volume of 80 - 140 ml per time. The mode of micturition was post-stimulus voiding. Vesicography showed that the bladder was filled and bladder neck was open in the micturition course of electric stimulation. Residual urine volume was 15 - 20 ml. CONCLUSION: Bladder controller together with a sacral deafferentation procedure can restore bladder function of paraplegic dogs.
