Evolution of the electronic properties of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes with the degree of CCl2 covalent functionalization.

The changes in energetic, structural, and electronic properties of the metallic (5,5) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) with the degree of sidewall covalent functionalization of CCl(2) are investigated extensively by using density functional theory calculations. The saturation concentration of CCl(2) covalent functionalization is predicted to be 33.3%. The cycloadducts always adopt an open structure. A band gap opens as the functionalization concentration reaches 11% and then basically increases with increasing functionalization concentration. These results are in agreement with available experiments and can be applied to accurately predict the band gap of metallic SWNTs produced by the HiPco method at a given CCl(2) functionalization concentration.

La2@C72 and Sc2@C72: computational characterizations.

The La2@C72 and Sc2@C72 metallofullerenes have been characterized by systematic density functional computations. On the basis of the most stable geometry of 39 C72 hexaanions and the computed energies of the best endofullerene candidates, the experimentally isolated La2@C72 species was assigned the structure coded #10611. The good agreement between the computed and the experimental 13C chemical shifts for La2@C72 further supports the literature assignment (Kato, H.; Taninaka, A.; Sugai, T.; Shinohara, H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 7782). The geometry, IR vibrational frequencies, and 13C chemical shifts of Sc2@C72 were predicted to assist its future experimental characterization.

Analysis of lanthanide-induced NMR shifts of the Ce@C82 anion.

The mapping of bond connectivity in the carbon cage of [Ce@C82]- and full assignment of the NMR lines were successfully achieved by means of 2D INADEQUATE NMR measurement. Paramagnetic NMR analysis shows that the Ce atom in [Ce@C82]- is located at an off-centered position adjacent to a hexagonal ring along the C2 axis of the C2v-C82 cage.

Synthesis and structural characterization of endohedral pyrrolidinodimetallofullerene: La2@C80(CH2)2NTrt.

The endohedral pyrrolidinodimetallofullerene, La2@C80(CH2)2NTrt (Trt = triphenylmethyl), was successfully synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic analyses reveal that two La atoms in the 6,6-adduct are localized at the stable site on the mirror plane. Theoretical calculation also suggests the localization of two La atoms in the 6,6-adduct.

Synthesis and properties of a new kinetically stabilized digermyne: new insights for a germanium analogue of an alkyne.

The reduction of an overcrowded (E)-1,2-dibromodigermene, Bbt(Br)Ge=Ge(Br)Bbt (2) [Bbt = 2,6-bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]-4-[tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl]phenyl], with KC8 afforded a stable digermyne, BbtGe[triple bond]GeBbt (1). The Ge[triple bond]Ge triple-bond characters of 1 were revealed by the X-ray crystallographic analysis and spectroscopic studies (UV/vis and Raman spectra) together with theoretical calculations. The Ge[triple bond]Ge bond lengths of the two nonidentical molecules of 1 observed in the unit cell were shorter than that of the previously reported digermyne, Ar'Ge[triple bond]GeAr' (Ar' = 2,6-Dip2C6H3, Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl).

A new parallel algorithm of MP2 energy calculations.

A new parallel algorithm has been developed for second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) energy calculations. Its main projected applications are for large molecules, for instance, for the calculation of dispersion interaction. Tests on a moderate number of processors (2-16) show that the program has high CPU and parallel efficiency. Timings are presented for two relatively large molecules, taxol (C(47)H(51)NO(14)) and luciferin (C(11)H(8)N(2)O(3)S(2)), the former with the 6-31G* and 6-311G** basis sets (1,032 and 1,484 basis functions, 164 correlated orbitals), and the latter with the aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets (530 and 1,198 basis functions, 46 correlated orbitals). An MP2 energy calculation on C(130)H(10) (1,970 basis functions, 265 correlated orbitals) completed in less than 2 h on 128 processors.

A singly bonded derivative of endohedral metallofullerene: La@C82CBr(COOC2H5).

A novel Bingel monoadduct of La@C82 (mono-A) has been synthesized by the reaction with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of DBU (Bingel-Hirsch reaction). Its structure has been fully determined by NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. The most distinct feature of mono-A is the single bond moiety between the functional group and fullerene cage, which is very different from the cyclopropane moiety in a conventional Bingel adduct of empty fullerenes. Further spectroscopic characterizations and calculations revealed the closed-shell structure of mono-A. Its formation mechanism was discussed according to calculation results.

Effect of the axial cysteine ligand on the electronic structure and reactivity of high-valent iron(IV) oxo-porphyrins (Compound I): a theoretical study.

The effect of axial ligands on the reactivity of high-valent iron(IV) oxo-porphyrins (Compound I) was investigated using the B3LYP hybrid density functional method. We studied alkane hydroxylation using four models: Compound I with thiolate, imidazole, phenolate, and chloride anions as axial ligands. The first three ligands were employed as models for cysteinate, histidine, and tyrosinate, respectively. Our calculations show that anionic ligands and neutral ligands favor different electronic states for stationary points in the reaction coordinate, and the calculated energy barrier and energy of several reaction intermediates show similar values. A remarkable effect of axial ligands was found in the final product release step. Our calculations show that the thiolate ligand weakens a bond between heme and an alcohol. In contrast, the imidazole ligand significantly increases the interaction between heme and an alcohol, which causes the catalytic cycle to be less efficient.

Positional control of encapsulated atoms inside a fullerene cage by exohedral addition.

The exohedrally functionalized derivative of endohedral metallofullerene, Ce2@C80(Mes2SiCH2SiMes2), was successfully synthesized and fully characterized. X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic analyses reveal that the free random motion of two metal atoms in Ce2@C80 is controlled inside the cage by exohedral chemical functionalization.

Sc3N@C80: computations on the two-isomer equilibrium at high temperatures.

Reported herein are computations on the relative concentrations of the two experimentally known isomers of Sc3N@C80 , that is, those produced by encapsulation of Sc3N in two particular C80 cages that obey the isolated-pentagon rule, namely, with I(h) and D(5h) symmetries. The calculations are based on density functional methods and have been carried out using the Gibbs energy over a broad temperature interval. It has been computed that, if a relatively free motion of the encapsulate inside the cages is allowed, the observed populations of 10 and 17 % for the D(5h) Sc3N@C80 species are reached at temperatures of 2100 and 2450 K, respectively. The inclusion of the entropy term is essential as, if it is neglected, the D(5h) Sc3N@C80 population at a temperature of 2100 K would be a mere 1 %, owing to the relatively large interisomeric separation potential energy of 19 kcal mol(-1).

Large-scale separation of metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.

In the applications of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), it is extremely important to separate semiconducting and metallic SWNTs. Although several methods have been reported for the separation, only low yields have been achieved at great expense. We show a separation method involving a dispersion-centrifugation process in a tetrahydrofuran solution of amine, which makes metallic SWNTs highly concentrated to 87% in a simple way.

Chemical reactivity of sc3n @ c80 and la2 @ c80.

Sc3N@C80 has a lower thermal reactivity than La2@C80, although Sc3N@C80 has the same carbon cage (Ih) and oxidation state (C806-) as La2@C80. This result is attributed to the difference in the energy level and distribution of LUMO between Sc3N@C80 and La2@C80.
