Influence of hyperbaric oxygen on tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nitric oxide production in endotoxin-induced acute lung injury in rats.
We previously demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment alleviated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury in rats. However, the mechanisms responsible for the protective effect are still not fully understood. To obtain further information on the protective effect of HBO, in this study we investigated the role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and nitric oxide (NO) in intratracheal spraying LPS-induced acute lung injury in rats after HBO or hyperoxia treatment. The results showed that HBO but not hyperoxia attenuated the TNF-alpha level in plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, NO concentration in BAL and plasma, and inducible NO synthase protein expression in lung tissue based on the Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining.

Autocrine effects of endothelin on in vitro proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats.
According to previous studies, endothelin-1 (ET-1) is the most potent growth factor in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). To evaluate if the dominant effect of ET-1-induced VSMC proliferation is achieved by autocrine regulation, aortic smooth muscle cells from four-week-old SHR and WKY (Wistar-Kyoto) rats were cultured in 24-well dishes, and the effects of ET-1 on VSMC proliferation were determined by (a) 3H-thymidine incorporation assays with different ET-1 blocking treatments, including a specific anti-ET-1 antibody; BQ-123, an ETA receptor blocker; and BQ-788, an ETB receptor blocker; and (b) examining the ET-1 blockade on the effects of treatment with other growth factors, including thrombin and angiotension II (AT-II). These results demonstrated that the anti-ET-1 antibody, BQ-123, BQ-788, and BQ-123 plus BQ-788 all caused dose-dependent inhibition of proliferation. A 90% inhibitory effect was observed at the maximum doses used except for BQ-123. The ET-1 receptor blockers inhibited thrombin-induced VSMC growth; however, they did not efficiently inhibit AT-II-induced VSMC growth. These results indicate that the autocrine effects of ET-1 play a predominant role in the proliferation of VSMCs from SHR and WKY rats. They also suggest that thrombin-induced VSMC growth is mediated by the autocrine effects of ET-1, and angiotensin II-induced VSMC growth is mediated by other signal pathways.
Pyomyositis with hepatic and perinephric abscesses caused by Candida albicans in a diabetic nephropathy patient.
Both disseminated candidiasis and pyomyositis are rare and mainly encountered in severely immunocompromised hosts. To our knowledge, Candida albicans related pyomyositis with formation of multiple visceral abscesses in a diabetic nephropathy patient has never previously been reported. A 47-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy and alcoholic liver disease developed disseminated candidiasis, with the initial presentation of pyomyositis. Debridement was performed and intravenous fluconazole commenced. Despite development of a single hepatic and multiple perinephric abscesses, the patient made a full recovery after completion of a 12-week course of intravenous fluconazole therapy. Candida species should be considered a potential pathogen in patients with predisposing factors.
The occurrence of sustained (>30 seconds) AIVR and probably early (<2 hours) nonsustained AIVR convey useful information about both early reperfusion and sustained coronary artery patency.

Acute fulminant hepatitis B in a patient with diabetic nephropathy treated successfully with concomitant lamivudine and molecular adsorbents recirculating system.
A 36-year-old man with type 2 diabetes and diabetic nephropathy treated with hemodialysis developed hepatitis B virus (HBV)-induced acute fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). Despite supportive treatment, the condition rapidly progressed as manifested by severe jaundice, coagulopathy and hepatic coma. He was placed on the waiting list for liver transplantation and was treated with lamivudine and extracoporeal liver support with the molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS). After three 8-h sessions of MARS treatment in 1 week, he had remarkable improvement in clinical symptoms and serum biochemistry. On the 14th hospital day, surface antigen seroconversion was noted with undetectable hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBs Ag) and low titre of anti-HBs antibody, indicating a complete recovery from acute fulminant hepatitis B. MARS treatment has been reported to benefit patients with liver failure from different causes including acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B, poisoning, post transplantation and Wilson's disease. The present case suggests its potential benefit when combined with lamivudine in treating uremic patients with acute fulminant hepatitis B.

Direct bonding of recessed-structure SAW filter on silicon substrate.
A procedure for fabricating a recessed surface acoustic wave (SAW) device coupled with silicon substrate is reported. The recessed structure is stable and rugged enough against the bonding process, and it can be applied to integrate a semiconductor device into one chip by a direct bonding technique. In this paper, the tensile strength of silicon (Si)-to-recessed-SAW filter is measured, and the performance of the device is discussed.
Proton-exchanged wet etching of recessed-structure SAW filter.
An improved method for fabricating recessed-structure surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters is reported. The relation between proton-exchanged duration and etched depth are studied, as well as the relation between internal reflection, etched depth, and thickness of the aluminum electrode. Experimental results show that the devices have superior performance, and ideas for further improvement of the fabricated SAW device are discussed.
